ORIGINAL: Burns We lost an icon today. A true character and a pioneer offensive coordinator. The real originator of the “West Coast” offense, despite others getting the fame. He provided the blueprints. Several years ago, John Childress proclaimed here on talkvikes that the Jerry Burns offense fundamentally differed from the Bill Walsh West Coast offense. I don't recall his rationale, but ever since then I've been agnostic regarding whether Burns should receive more credit for the WC offense. Regardless, Burns' offensive philosophy was clearly ahead of its time. Eh, whether you want to call it west coast or not, it had several similar elements. For sure, Burns was a pioneer in popularizing one RB offense, which has become the standard now. I recall a quote from way back someone asked Burns about how that came about. He replied “Well I only had one good running back”. The answer is deceptively simple, but genius. Burns could see beyond convention and ask why do I have to do it this way just because that’s the way it’s always been done? Who says you need two RBs? He used what he had and devised something new.
