Would that be the youngest starting 5 in the league?

Completely new 100% drafted OL in 4 years. Will people stop saying it's neglected by Spielman and give credit where credit is due?

I suppose a wait and see until this year shakes out us fair.

I'll still give him credit though.

We have been giving credit. It's one thing to draft linemen. It's another to draft good ones. So far, he has drafted 1 confirmed good one. Hopefully Darrisaw and Davis have a great first year impact and Cleveland and Bradbury make enough strides that we can give a different kind of credit that is due.

+1

Read somewhere Spielman has spent more draft stock than any other GM on the oline in the last few years. But like you said that doesn't mean squat. It's all about results.

Considering that 40% of the proposed starting OL was drafted 2 weeks ago, and we started Dozier all last year, any criticism Spielman received up to this year's draft was well deserved.

Will people (actually just you) stop asking if people will stop saying the OL is neglected by Spielman? Since he went with something he has never done picking OL in the 1st and 3rd, I believe NOBODY has said he is still neglecting the OL. But you've harped repeatedly on this refrain.

As for giving credit where credit is due, he gets credit if the picks pan out. And he gets blamed if the picks suck. He's the head mofo in change and it goes with the territory.

Bradbury is certainly not trending well and Ezra will probably be in a new position yet still in a general position he never played before last year. So yes, wait and see... probably past just this year.

jbusse -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/15/2021 8:54:55 AM)

Dakota Dozier was the NY Jets equivalent of Pat Elflein. The Jets OL was crap when they cut Dozier, yet he somehow finds a starting role on the Vikings.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/15/2021 8:58:46 AM)

They better get good in a hurry, because we are going to face almost all of the great rush guys in the league this season.

'RUN FOR YOUR LIFE", a new series on Fox and CBS starting in September featuring Kirk Cousins.

That's like someone dieting for a couple of months each year for the past few years but ending up at least as heavy as when they started. The next year they buy several diet books and stock the fridge with veggies, then say how about some credit for not neglecting my weight.

Prefer a shorter analogy but that's all I got.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/15/2021 9:20:49 AM)

Maybe Burns giving credit to the RBs for not losing their shoes after Anderson did a dumb f***ing thing losing his shoe and Walker losing his?

The scary part is Elf and Davis are both Spielman third rounders. While one player does not equate to the other, given the poor OL track record one can only hope Davis works out.

Regarding Hughes: neither his stats nor his PFF grades suggest he ever performed well. In fact it’s only a slight decline from 2018 to 2020.

He was inconsistent from day 1. He had the pick 6 and he had a lot of blown coverages in his rookie year.

All that deeply buried OG Hernandez angst is welling back up to the surface ...

Hughes was a rookie day 1. He was inconsistent as a rookie. There's a common theme here somewhere ...

Hard to develop into and around major injuries.

He might have been a terrible cb without the injuries ... its impossible to know. Be interesting to see if he ever stays healthy in KC.

If Gladney gets found guilty of anything ... our cb depth will suddenly have evaporated. (not saying our depth is more important than justice in a domestic violence case...)

I don't dispute anything you are saying Tom. My comment was geared to those who are trying to maintain that Hughes was really good until he tore his ACL. He had a few moments, but he had even more bad moments. The ACL tear did not help, but let's not pretend he was on a career path to multiple Pro Bowls before it happened.

He was a rookie who showed great promise IMO. He would have been a pro bowler IMO if he had stayed healthy, but that's just guesswork like anybody else coudl do. He ended up being far more trouble than he was worth unfortunately.

No revisionist history with Hughes. He was mediocre. Some people transfer the allure of being a first round pick into play on the field.

+1
I remember Boyd on the field more last year even before his injury. Gladney and Dantzler passed Hughes on the depth chart right away. He would have been the 5th corner if Gladney is out.

I was excited by his playmaking possibilities when drafted but too many injuries to trust.

My personal belief is if the injuries don't come Hughes is a pro bowler right now. We will never know. I wish the best for him so I hope he can stay healthy in KC and make us regret moving on from him. However, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he doesn't pass his physical or has he?

That's ridiculous. and rude.

I put myself out there trying to defend Hughes on some level and then you run amok making these grandiose outlandishly un-provable declarations.

It really sheds a bad light on the 'not completely anti-Hughes' faction. Of which, apparently, there are only two ... thanks for bringing that into focus also.

It's my opinion. Nothing rude and of course I don't think ridiculous. Nothing is provable about how he might have progressed if he had not gotten injured, because he did get injured.

About all I derived out of this article is that Darrisaw lined up at LT and Davis lined up at RG during Friday's rookie practice.

Yeah. It wasn't declaring starters.

Ouch so painful that we are giving away Mike Hughes to save was it less than $2Million cap? Hughes came in and played well from his first game until getting injured. Never fully made it back. Anybody can get injured. Did he bust? Sure, but only due to injury. There was nothing wrong with the pick at all. If he had taken an O Line there we wouldn't have taken O'Neil in the second. I think barring injury the above is the starting lineup.

I wish I could argue against this post [:o]

I get sucked into comments like: "there will be competition" and "coach Zimmer wants to get some size up front". Gives me false hope.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/16/2021 12:57:40 AM)

Unless Rick Dennison suddenly find the difference betweeen HIS ASS, and an offensive line man’s actuall skill set, I expect to see runs on first and ten, gadget slow developing runs on ant and all downs and stupid blocking schemes on quick throws short of the sticks on third down in particular.

Dennison, and Raucher, and new OC KKubi… will need to move the chains and score TD’s from everywhere on the field to convince me 1979 football is not still being played by the 2021 Vikings.

If the OL continues to suck, KC continues to be a borderline second tier QB, and one or more reliever gets hurt, develops the drops, or Cook gets mediocre with his constant over use and beating, I expect 7-10, again, for the first time, and a mid high half draft pick next year.

I demand better, as a fan, but god knows what I want, never happens…

BP2 sux ass.

From Courtney Cronin’ a Twitter feed....

With Phase II of OTAs beginning Monday, Zimmer seemed confident a good number of veterans will be in attendance: "The communication that I’ve had and heard through with the guys, they like being here, they like being around each other, they like coming to work and trying to get better. And if they don’t show up, we’ll coach the guys that are here. That’s what we do."

I asked Zimmer about whether Mike Hughes' health (limited to 24 games over 3 years) played a factor in the Vikings' trading the former 1st rounder: "Mike is a terrific kid. He’s been injured an awful lot. With the way that everything is now, we were fortunate to get a couple corners last year in the draft, we signed Patrick Peterson in free agency, so I think that gave us the opportunity to make the trade."

Zimmer on why the Vikings started Wyatt Davis out at RG, where he played in college, and the possibility of moving him around the OL: "It’s just where we think they might fit, get a look at them. I’m sure that won’t be the last place he lines up, at least next OTAs."

Mike Zimmer on Kellen Mond putting so much time into studying Kirk Cousins on film/trying to incorporate his skillset and what he wants him to learn from Cousins: "I want him to be himself. We brought him in here as a talented athletic quarterback and just want him to be himself. The things he can learn from Kirk are the way that he handles the games, the way that he goes about his business in the classroom, on the field how to work."

Why??

Kalil, Elflein and Bradbury all started right away as high draft picks. O'Neill started 11 of 15 games as a rookie.

Darrisaw is a lock unless he is McKinnie like lazy. Davis should be playing right away unless he still has lingering knee problems.

We scored 50 TDs and we only had about 8 total quarters of garbage time football. Is that bad?

You would think we averaged 14 points a game with no explosive plays.

We have done pretty much everything that the Board(myself included) complains about every year.
1) Draft multiple OLineman high
2) Don't change their position(Olineman)
3) Draft a QB to push Cousins instead of keeping some Slappy to make Kirk feel good.
4) Find a better 3rd WR
5) Find some Kick and Punt Returners
6) Don't trade mid round picks to get multiple 7th Rounders. Stay put and pick best available.
7) We cut popular Vets to get cap space to bring in valuable FAs.

Will it all work out? Not sure but time will tell.
