Nice links. Thanks, Dan.

Normally, I would say, "Starting over sucks. Now we are going to have to rebuild and we won't be competitive for at least another year (2023) or two (2024) at the earliest."; however, I think (hope) that this situation is different. I think any top college HC or top NFL coordinator could probably keep this team at .500 level or better given the talent and the many narrow losses that the 2021 team endured (a few breaks had this team at 9-11 wins and in the playoffs).

Getting the right GM will obviously be huge. The new GM will need to make 2 huge decisions immediately after being hired: hire a new HC and trade or restructure Cousins. Ideally, IMO, the new HC will be a person with connections to be able to hire quality OC & DC and staff. I also think that trading Cousins and freeing up cap space is probably the way to go. Most teams make their runs when their QB is in their rookie contract, unless the QB is a HOFer. Any team is severely handicapped if their QB takes up 15-20% of their cap without producing at a HOF level. We've seen teams over the years go from Super Bowl-competitive to borderline playoff team when the QB gets signed to their 2nd contract (e.g. Flacco/BAL, Wilson/SEA).

The Vikings have one of the youngest rosters...plus their cap guy knows his stuff.

There are a ton of short term contracts that would clear out space quickly...restructure/cut/trade of Thielen and Hunter give us plenty. I would try to keep Barr and Peterson at reduced cap numbers.

The cap guy is gonna be replaced too.

How do you know?

Listening to PA this morning, he seems to think that Brzezinski will be involved in the interviewing process for the new GM.

Thanks. Now I know where to send my resume.

So many possibilities.

I hope that even if the new GM wants to work with Cousins that they draw a line. The guy is richer than most could dream of being...not won anything, and can make a pretty penny still, but we're not holding the franchise hostage with another bad contract.

Perhaps the guy they choose is only about rectifying the situation by shipping him and moving on.

Exciting times.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/10/2022 10:41:13 AM)

The Wilf's statement was A+ to me.

I don't think Kirk understands or could be made to understand that it would be beneficial to take less money. The guy is on cameo.com for crying out loud. He'll do a recorded message for $400 and even worse, he has the indicator on his profile that he gets the recorded messages out regularly in under 24 hours. I'm surprised he finds the time for this and, to be honest, is using his time to make an extra $400 here and there.

I think you could argue that the Vikings have the most attractive situation for a new GM and HC to come in to. New stadium, state of the art practice facilities and a team that has a lot of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully Zygi and company make the right decisions, but I suspect they'll have their choice of candidates to fill those positions.

This guy has us as #6

https://www.nfl.com/news/ranking-nfl-head-coach-openings-which-job-is-most-enticing

I don't know who Judy Battista is and you could argue that the Raiders have a better situation than the Vikings, but teams like the Jaguars and Bears? Laughable. No one is turning down the Vikings for the Jaguars unless weather is their top priority. And pointing out that any situation is attractive because the team has a great fanbase is just lazy. There are few NFL teams that don't have a rabid fanbase. Regardless, unlike the days of the Metrodome and Red McCombs, the Vikings aren't going to lose out on candidates because of their ownership, facilities, or organization.

Yeah its hard to evaluate ... as far as a situation to walk into ... depends on

how you feel about the QB and roster (good on one side really bad on the other)

what the cap situation looks like year 1, 2, 3 ...

The ownership is hands off which is a big plus but will spare no expense which is a plus plus

The facilities are top notch

Minnesota versus ...

I'm not sure we are currently the best situation but I wholeheartedly agree its more attractive this GM time around.

Really we are going there....29th and 31st in Defense...a coach that is supposed to be a defense mastermind.....this is why he was fired.

Zimmer didn't give the OC or QB reigns to win.....LAC game yes but one of the few this year.

I did not know that and find it both hilarious and ridiculous.

Begone then.

I'm pretty sure how the prospected candidate feels about said QB and situation would come up in an interview. They can slant their decision based on the answer.

Perhaps the (another) losing season and anti vax thing has the Wilfs themselves wanting him gone.

That might seem trivial but if he averages 24 of these a week that’s a half million dollars of income. True that’s still a small percentage of his contract salary, but it’s a significant amount.

I figured Brez was just a number cruncher.

There are 5 Wilf owner/president/vp's and 2 different guys named as ownership group. Some will have says, others probably votes. I'm not sure Brez will factor into it at all.

I’d make him pay me, to have his antivaxxed, feeble minded, suck ass “star quality” annoyingly doing anything for someone I cared about..

It would be like asking Burnsie to make a cameo appearance and guest speaker gig, at a rational thinkers convention…

As a long suffering Viking fan, it's music to my ears.

Here is an article from PFT with exerts from the mission statement:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/01/10/vikings-vow-to-consistently-contend-for-championships/

Yes, “just good enough” is no longer good enough for the Wilfs.

In a statement announcing the firing of coach Mike Zimmer and G.M. Rick Spielman, team owners Zygi and Mark Wilf made it clear that the search process will happen internally, and that they’re committed to taking things to the next level.

“We appreciate Rick and Mike’s commitment to the team’s on-field success, their passion for making a positive impact in our community and their dedication to players, coaches and staff,” the Wilfs said in a statement issued on Monday. “While these decisions are not easy, we believe it is time for new leadership to elevate our team so we can consistently contend for championships. We wish both Rick and Mike and their families only the best.

“Our comprehensive search for a new general manager and head coach will begin immediately and will be led internally. We are determined to have sustained success and bring Vikings fans the Super Bowl championships they expect and deserve.”

The Wilfs have built a great stadium and an excellent practice facility. They’re willing to spend money on players. Now, they just need to find the right people to bring it all together.

And if they’re going to continue to not live and work in Minnesota, it would be helpful to have someone in charge of the football operations who brings to the office every day the same accountability that the regular presence of ownership would.
