Running backs are a dime a dozen. The last guy to lead the league in rushing and win a Super Bowl was Terrell Davis ('98 season).

If they are good that’s great but I wouldn’t pay.

Elliot was worthless before the ink was dry.

Furnette isn’t getting paid all that much by Bucs and it isn’t some long term deal.

Take a look at Tennessee. They are 12-5 this season and the #1 seed without Henry this season. Anybody think they should be going right back to the offense they ran when Henry was there if he plays in the playoffs? I don't. They became more diverse because everyone was involved.

Look at how long it took them to overcome Henry...he will be back for the playoffs.....how many TDs, Yards, etc. did he account for? 8 games 900 yards 10 TDs..

Don't agree. You can choose to not pay a ton for them but they are very important. Brad can keep saying not to spend a high pick on one but the four teams in the last 2 SB did exactly that.

That says more about building your team around a RB than the value of a RB in general.

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2022 10:47:38 AM)

My random musing of the day:

Dallas....[&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:]

Love that they lost and how they lost! LMFAO!!!!

I think the 9ers are a solid match-up for GB. If Jimmy G can avoid the mistakes and make a few key play, They could sneak out of GB with a W.

Glad Zim and Rick are gone. Get a young, offense minded coach in here. Lots of crap to clean off the roster, but lots of good young talent, too.

It's not the 1970s. Don't overpay for a RB. The game is won and lost on the LOS. You need a good QB who reacts well under pressure, and good game-day coach and a savvy GM. Period.

Top General Manager Candidates
It was somewhat surprising to see the Wilfs fire Rick Spielman as well as Mike Zimmer, so I hadn’t put together a list of some of the top candidates for GM openings this off-season. A list of some top heading coaching candidates is here. Here is a list compiled by Jonathan Jones at cbssports.com. Italics afterward are my [wludford] comments on each candidate. Below are the top candidates from that rather extensive list.

Joe Hortiz, Ravens director of player personnel: He’s been a top lieutenant for Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta for years, and he’s been in this role for seven seasons. Hortiz is very well respected in the college scouting community. If you’re looking to pilfer a GM from the ranks of another organization, none better to pilfer from than the Ravens. They’ve been the best drafting team since Hortiz has been there, and pretty sharp in free agency too. Not sure how much credit Hortiz merits in all that, but he’s certainly learned and worked with a couple great GMs in Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta.

Ed Dodds, Colts assistant GM: Dodds was highly coveted last offseason but had the privilege of waiting for the right job. If the right one opens up this offseason, I’d expect him to be a top candidate. Dodds has earned a strong reputation around the league, but like George Paton did, is waiting for the right opportunity. The Vikings’ GM job could be just that.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Browns VP of football operations: He was a hot name last cycle and could very well land a job this time around. Adofo-Mensah has a Wall Street background and excels at the numbers part of this business. Assuming the Vikings retain Rob Brzezinski, they don’t need someone of Adofo-Mensah’s background. They need a guy who’s good at evaluating talent.

Joe Schoen, Bills assistant GM: Among all the names on this list, no one’s name was mentioned more than Schoen’s. Considering the diverse amount of voices and backgrounds cultivated to make this list, that speaks loudly. The right hand of Brandon Beane in Buffalo, Schoen is going to be a GM either this year or next. A leading contender, but is he the best candidate? Maybe.

Dave Ziegler, Patriots director of player personnel: He took on the role of de facto GM with the team after Nick Caserio left for Houston. He totally changed the Pats draft process in 2021 and helped Belichick spend big in free agency. Probably on the rise as a GM candidate as a result, but is that enough of a track record?

https://www.dailynorseman.com/2022/1/10/22876405/wilfs-make-a-clean-sweep-but-who-will-be-the-new-gm-and-head-coach

Looking at the complete lack of quality in the available GMs and HCs we probably should have just stuck with Zim and Rick.

Umm what?

I see 8 better HC in Pederson, Hackett, Flores, Dallas Coordinators, LA OC, and TB Coordinators.

I see 5-6 GMs that are better than Spielman.

It looks like a great time to look for GM and a coach.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2022 11:52:54 AM)

If the Vikes interview Pederson and Flores there will have to be a deep dive on what the issues were with the GM and their communication problems and divide that was created....we just can't have it. May lead to someone like Hackett being hired.

It doesn't work. So the name's important.

so, you want to stick with a GM and coach that have not spoken in months...

OK

I have come to terms that many people will continue to ignore new information to keep their opinions

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/18/2022 11:09:39 AM)

I have nothing to offer in the GM search....just hoping for the best

Spielman was not terrible, although the new information of 'not talking' to his coach, has lowered my opinion of him...I mean really, this is not high school.

the dysfunction of the front office/HC was apparent on the field....completely uninspired play all year long, that screams leadership, IMO

cant wait to see what the next stage is, crash and burn or to the moon! just be interesting

this team was not interesting, and that is saying something being as almost every game was 'close'

SKOL!

Whatever happened to Ralph Irving, who coined the moniker "Butt Farte" back in 2009?

I tend to agree, if the Vikings hire a defensive minded head coach IMO the most critical hire will be the OC and not the HC. If it goes down that way and the OC is a homerun and gets offers to be a HC somewhere where does that leave the Vikings?

joejitsu -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/18/2022 1:10:53 PM)

I read in a Zone Coverage article that said if a team is looking to build a good offensive line, then Ryan Poles would be a good pick at GM. I think the iol is the weakest link on our team. Who knows what we even have in Davis, an All-American right guard with a top 10 college team? Not playing him was zim's fault.

And by the sound of how the relationship was going between Zim and RS it may have been more about sticking it to RS than actual player evaluation why Davis got no chance to suit up or play.

Mond too

seems like quite the cluster*** at the end...makes me question Wilf's decision making with regards to the team

with some of the stories that are coming out, why the F did we extend Zim (and Spielman), it feels like the year too late instead of year too early scenario all over again.

I would have ditched Zim after the 9ers playoff loss, but it was understandable

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/18/2022 1:43:44 PM)

of course, i would have ditched Chili for Tomlin

Zim for Stephanski

I am probably too knee jerk

I was never a fan of firing coaches during the year but my opinion has changed on that, this franchise would be in a better place if Mond started the final two games to see if he had any potential at all. No way Zimmer was going to allow it.

Could the Vikings hire Vic Fangio right now for DC, to make Minnesota more appealing for a HC ?
