Yea all I can say so far is the this is the biggest shake up since they bought the team..

It’s like fan frustration is finally filtering up..

And they notice…

I like the Wilfs or whomever are at least looking at widely divergent backgrounds.

My thoughts as well. Both seem good to me.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/22/2022 10:14:26 PM)

Thank God!!!

Let the knee-jerk reactions and misrepresentations begin!!! "Day trader, analytics nut - Boom or bust" vs. the guy who went to St. Cloud State er... quasi Ivy Boston College who only listens to his gut and eschews all numbers....

None of us have any real feel, much less insight, into the GM candidates, so of course we overlay biases and assumptions. Same with the coaching candidates, though it's a little more visible to fans. What happened with Morris in TB, what Hackett really offers vs what Rodgers makes up for, etc. People making declarations like no retreads (almost every Super Bowl winner is a retread) or OCs only or whatever sound pretty foolish.

You got me, total knee jerk. I'm so emotionally invested. I know less than zero about any of the potential GM's. Much tougher to gauge than HC's'

Both look like good candidates that would bring some much needed energy back to the franchise.

I certainly understand the emotions!!!! Both are appealing, but who knows?

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 7:15:59 AM)

Jimmy G is ass and his team is in the NFCCG.

Could have been us if we had of gotten our shit together. Thanks Zimmer ball.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 7:19:39 AM)

Maybe the 49rs get destroyed next week and feel they are a Kirk Cousins away from a SB.

Send Cousins and a 1st to them for Lance.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 7:25:18 AM)

One and done with a home playoff game, or worse after a bye is not a better result than we had.

Nothing more positive about their seasons.

Well, I guess I'm pretty happy with their results...

Niners beat the Rams twice this season. Kicked their asses the first time they played them.

This was the year - said it early and often. I agree with your take.

The defense is awful, nowhere close to competing at that level regardless of coaching. "It's not the X's and the O's but the Jimmys and the Joes."

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 10:24:43 AM)

I don't hold Zimmer in high regard as a HC, and wonder if the Vikings had a more aggressive HC like Pederson, if the Vikings would be still playing next week.

Part of me wants to see that next year, Cousins with a great HC. But part of me feels like Cousins would probably still come up short, like he has about a Tannehill ceiling. Another year of Cousins, is another lost year if development for a young QB.

What's less appealing to me about Adofo-Mensah is his relatively short track record in football. 8-9 years, is that right? Maybe football is different, but I'm much better at my vocation after 20+ years than I was at 8-9 years.

And 6/8 years were in research devopment. So basically 2 years experience making football decisions.

I am hoping the Vikes go with Poles, but there are probably other strong candidates out there.

Right. I'm honestly very surprised that some consider him a top-2 candidate for Vikings GM. Is it that NFL front offices are so lean that the talent pool for GM is shallow? Like marty, of these two candidates, I'd strongly prefer Poles.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 11:24:25 AM)

No take on any of the candidates at GM…

Just don’t mortgage cap future on ridiculous contracts…. Don’t overpay over the hill veterans..

Do not trade back, repeatedly, in the draft..

For gods sake watch every FN game, in its entirety, with the position coaches, to evaluate current personnel, and draft accordingly..

WTF else you got to do..?

Delegate the bullshit, like hiring and evaluating the offensive coordinator’s son’s bother in law…

Just put a fn rule I place:

No blood or marriage in subordinate position.

Boom.
Fixed.

Move on.

Say no to Lance. If Shanahan didn’t play him, there’s a reason.

Absolutely. Our defense gave us no chance for or in the playoffs ... I don't mind backing in, its my team and I'll root for them to win every game until I die. But I'd rather do it with a little self-respect in tact. Not that there's a choice.

Our HC had gotten us there before but he had sunk so low as a coach-coordinator and leader we were doomed from that standpoint as well ...

As far as Jimmy G ... horrible ... he's like the opposite of Cousins, will not shy away from any bad ill-advised throw. If the two could swap testicles and brains, they'd both be so much better.

After all, he sees him every day.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 11:59:55 AM)

If we couldn't get into the playoffs when nearly 50% of the teams do, then no way was it even close to being our year.

Going back to the offseason, many were trumpeting the OL when in fact its success depended on TWO rookies playing well, a converted collegiate LT moving from RG to LG, and Badbury at C. Really?

The secondary was worrisome. Peterson was not the former Pro Bowler, Gladney was gone, so all we really had was journeyman Alexander, the hope that Dantzler would keep improving, and a couple of prayer-types.

The interior DL held promise at least, but DE was iffy.

Then we still had Cousins who doesn't have "It". He needs a top running game and a generational defense.

From June 2020. He seems more like a collaborator than "a numbers guy":

"I think my background was a positive because I did not have any preconceived notions or biases," Adofo-Mensah said Thursday in a video conference call with local reporters. "When I sat in a room with great evaluators that I have been around in San Francisco, I just took everything they told me. I tried to find the intuition behind it. I ask 'why' a lot. You will find that out about me. I wanted to know even the most simple question. You might think it is simple, but I am building the complex bridge that will get me somewhere complex.

"I will pick every person's brain. You find some amazing knowledge from everywhere in this league. I would say that is where my evaluation base comes from."

As Vice President of Football Operations, Adofo-Mensah will work closely with Berry and the rest of the senior football staff to contribute to all roster and strategy decisions. He will also assist Berry with the day-to-day operations of the department. Adofo-Mensah, a former walk-on basketball player at Princeton, came into the NFL with a clean slate football-wise but had his foundation built thanks to extensive time spent with longtime veterans such as Vic Fangio, Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch and a myriad of others.

Still, Adofo-Mensah is adamant he won't be quibbling with a scout's opinion of a player. That's not his area of expertise. Instead, he'll collect and assess the various opinions from the Browns' player personnel staff and help the group arrive at the soundest possible decisions.

"My job is going to be another person who knows enough about everybody's point of view to come together and make a good decision," Adofo-Mensah said. "That is where I see my role, and that is where I see a lot of my value. I have my perspective and I will bring that to the table, but I also have an appreciation for everybody else's perspective, not only from my time in San Francisco but also my time as a trader, to be honest. There are a lot of people who win a lot of different ways, and you come to appreciate that.

"At the end of the day, you are just trying to make better decisions. That is kind of the basis of where I will approach this job from."

Adofo-Mensah evolved in his position over close to seven years with the 49ers, and the team did, too. When Lynch was hired as general manager in 2017, Adofo-Mensah was empowered and eventually promoted to Director of Football Research and Development. What made last year's trip to the Super Bowl so special to Adofo-Mensah was the trials and tribulations the team endured to get there. Just in 2018, with sky-high expectations surrounding the team, the 49ers floundered after quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending injury and finished 4-12.

What Adofo-Mensah saw around him during those hard times fortified his beliefs on what it takes to meet the ultimate goal every team in the NFL has.

"You have to have people in the building who are not going to blink, know what that looks like and have a shared vision," Adofo-Mensah said. "All of that stuff sounds good when you read it, but then living that experience over these last three years – 2017 was not easy and 2018 was not easy. I saw John and Kyle never blink. Nobody else beneath them blinked. We always knew we were building toward something. Seeing that up close, I just know that is what it takes to win and I will never back down from that.

"It takes talent to win in this league. It takes great coaching. It takes great development. It takes a lot of great things. Seeing that up close and knowing that you need an aggressive mindset to win on the margins in every aspect of football operations is an invaluable experience I will never be able to replicate. I think that is what I will bring to the Cleveland Browns."

He sounds impressive. I just feel that, besides football knowledge, there's a lot of cunning and manipulation LOL that also goes into GMing, not just intelligence. The art of the deal (trades and working the draft), public relations (double-speak to media, throwing other teams off the scent), etc.

There has to be a track record of being able to recognize player and coaching talent, not just operations and culture building. Otherwise its just a corporate resume.

I respect that he's a great collaborator and sounding board but sooner or later he's going to have to make football decisions and over-rule the people that he hired as his 'experts'. He has the final say, he has to protect the franchise ... like when his trusted experts tell him that a 45M guaranteed extension for a decent QB is a good idea.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/23/2022 12:37:09 PM)

Who I really want for our GM is Machiavelli. Give him a call.

In my mind's eye, I see a GM baptism sequence with zygi and mark holding the new baby GM ... Godfather music playing in the background ... inter-cut with scenes of our new GM kissing Goodell's ass for favors, making pre-game payments to referees, whispering false draft rumors on our targeted prospects and, most devious of all, lying on our weekly injury reports!

I ... don't ... care ... anymore how he it gets done, just get it done.

Mike Hughes sighting... falling down and giving up the go ahead TD... classic.

F'ing Kirk Cousins looks like dog meat compared to KC and Buff QB play...

Young mobile QB that can think on the fly and has a incredible drive and HEART to win...

KFC, I just do what I am told...

BE GONE YOU POS waste of huge cap space... we made you beyond rich for you shitty play and waste of seasons of the talent around you...
