if i'm advising o'connell, kwesi, et al...i have them fly down to where ever mond is and give him a really good look - set up some ball catchers at a local college/high school...it's very possible that he's a better option than anyone in this year's draft, and it would help them decide what they want to do....

So … if any of the HS ball catchers look good you sign them too (for some new xbox controllers and extra athletes foot powder) because that’s a proper evaluation tool?

How is that going to quantify anything?

Mond has to prove he can compete for the #3 or #2 spot first. In training camp and preseason. That’s August.

We need a starting QB plan yesterday.

71 passing touchdowns
9,991 yards
won 3 bowl games
senior bowl MVP

Cincinnati is currently about $49 million UNDER the cap for 2022. Their highest cap hit individual is currently... you can't make this up - Trae Waynes. They can potentially fix EVERY hole on the team this year. If they want Riley Reiff back they can have him for almost nothing because Reiff is already counting $2.750 million in dead cap. Cincy didn't just catch lightning in a bottle for 2021, they're set up to recatch it for many years to come.

2 years, 5 games, 12 Tackles, 1 PD, 0 INT.

They get their OLine in order and they will be tough to beat.

Looking back on it, how about we overpay for DJ Reader instead of Pierce and Tomlinson?

During my "build-a-roster" post during that offseason I had Reader as my DT free agent.

I don't think anybody assumes he's no good ... only he wasn't ready last season in a very small sample size. That may or may not be his fault.

I was thrilled we took a QB at the top of the 3rd and disappointed he didn't get more game action.

We all want to see what we've got in Mond ... but we can't wait until training camp or preseason to pencil in our starter and back-up.

Our Starter is at this moment already penciled in.

His name is Kirk Cousins...and unless he is traded or retired or the Vikes just eat the cap hit and release him (about as likely as me winning the lottery four times and getting hit by lightning twice) he's our starter. It'd be nice to know of Mond has the ability to be successful at the NFL level.

As for the backup....either Mond is ready or we will have to find some journeyman back up. How are we to know if Mond is ready or not, necessitating a backup before the draft, August etc?

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 3:23:43 PM)

Zimmer didn’t want Mond..

Zimmer refused to do anything meaningful to develop Mond.

Zimmer threw Mond to the wolves in one game for three plays, then smugly told the world “ I told you so”..

Zimmer was a cancer that grew from an overinflated ego fueled by The Peter Principle.

Mond deserves to have some time with starting level receivers and blocking, not scout teams and special teams warriors .

If he has no potential, try again.

It’s not like he is costing us 45 million dollars to be mediocre.

Someone may want to remind Kirk that Moses wandered around lost in the desert for oh, 40 years before the Red Sea opened up for him.

So, 40-Year Contracts? [sm=scratch.gif]

Zimmer was trying to stick it to Rick Speilman

Wyatt Davis. a third round draft pick

Rimington–Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year (2020)
Unanimous All-American (2020)
Consensus All-American (2019)
2× first-team All-Big Ten (2019, 2020)

And he doesn't see a snap all year long?

Barely gets to dress for games?

You can't tell me he was worse than all the other options on the roster...

Doesn't make sense why he didn't play more, unless Zimmer was just being an asshole in his last couple years.

Smith Marsette, Davis, Bynum, and Kene didn't see much time at all......I have a feeling some of them will be very useful.

Davis has 0 snaps all year long.
Bynum, Smith-Marsette and Nwangu really only got time because of injuries to others.

They all showed flashes of how they could be useful when they got their chances. Mond got three snaps, Davis none...

The only rookie who really saw any significant time was Darrisaw.

We can't know, that's my point.

Do you really want to wait until August [at the earliest] to find out if Mond is an adequate back-up and, if not, sign a decent back-up at that point? [This is not even addressing our long term prospects if we are not committing to Cousins after 2022]

Maybe you'd like to keep Mannionizing our backup QB situation? KAM has a big brain ... I'm sure he could do in a pinch. Maybe, like Spielman, you'd rather not have legitimate competition at the position which could potentially create a fuss ...

I'd rather sign and draft legitimate competition for Mond now [before , by or during the draft] ... even if we do plan on keeping ol' Golden Calf Cousins.

Flood the position for godsakes ... oops, I was going to move on from all that ...

Also ... obviously Cousins is penciled in as the starter today. I am waiting to find out if that holds true for a few more days.

Murray sucked because Hopkins got hurt. If there is any reasonable chance of acquiring him, you go for it.

So all it takes for him to suck is losing a top WR. I thought the great QBs overcame that.

My point is it's very unlikely to get a top QB drafting outside of the top 10 picks. I was forgetting Mahomes and Allen 10th and 7th respectively. Jackson, Carr and Dak don't impress me much and Wilson, Brady, Rodgers and Ben were a long, long time ago.

Especially the ones where running the ball is a big part of their game.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 5:05:27 PM)

Zero interest in Murray.

The only QB I want to see get 40-50 million a year is the rookie we sign in the next 2 years that up and earns a 2nd contract at whatever the going rate is.

I don't want to chase FA's any more.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 5:12:17 PM)

If our franchise QB isn't there this year I hope we trade way down or out of the 1st round for 2023 stock. Go all in then.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 5:17:20 PM)

Trade Cousins for a 2023 1st. Trade down for another.

The #1 or #2 pick would be obtainable and not painful.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 5:34:50 PM)

Read something stupid on some Billswire article...Bills should trade for Hunter for a 2022 4th and 23 2nd.

Ya think? You can't just have a want and sprinkle magical fairy dust. A package that doesn't consist of a #1 on this draft or next is a non starter.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 5:47:49 PM)

Three weeks to hash out contracts and cap issues or we basically sit on the bench in Free Agency.

Tough to get full freight for a guy that has missed 26 games over the past 2 years.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 6:39:39 PM)

I can't recall a post season that was as in such a state of flux, it's the most exciting Viking off season EVER, sort of.

This could go SO many different ways, as far as keeping players, trading them, and letting them go.

Almost ANY direction is likely to feel like an initial disappointment. But hopefully an underlying optimism or fire.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2022 6:59:58 PM)

Keeping Kirk would be the easiest thing to do, the safest.

Anything else right now, seems highly risky. You don't how high you can get in the draft, and even a top 10 pick at QB seems highly risky. Going with Mond would be quite a gamble.

Trading for Watson, Wilson, Murray all seem like good ideas, but would probably cost quite a bit, and are a high risk, only Wilson has won a SB. Garapollo would be an even stronger risk, not as much upside.
