I ❤️ Kwesi.

Could listen to him talk all day.

So smart...and handsome. #mancrush

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/26/2022 8:42:04 AM)

There was an article on zone coverage how SF did an anti-Brad last year on their secondary and how the SF def was top ten.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/26/2022 10:18:39 AM)

Honestly...it was on record my SB calls. Calling the shot that it would be the year...

How could things not lead me to being right back in that fold again.

Inevitable.

The writer of that article was obviously delusional.

If this team gels together differently skies the limit.

I'd love nothing more than to see a different Kirk Cousins. Makes you wonder just how toxic things had gotten and be glad Zimmer is gone.

I'd love to revisit Cousins and Zimmers odd looking interaction after the Detroit cone back that looked worse than anyone said it was.

I think it's kind of telling that after 3 years of very little communication, Zimmer and Cousins started meeting weekly. Those meetings to improve communication were initiated by Cousins, not the coach. Zimmer really set the team up to fail.

Yeah there should be a title for that weird emotional shoving event.

It started with a winning FG against the Lions, and if it missed they would have been 1-4. I think KC was happy, fired up, but also wanted to sort of rub in the win. Zimmer was just the oddball and wasn't going to 'celebrate'.

Zimmer was more suited to coaching in the Grant, Lombardi era.

True.

OC: Jerry Burns
DC: Mike Zimmer

He apparently was also against giving such big bucks to Cousins. So maybe he has some old man wisdom, lol.

Nate -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/27/2022 12:18:08 PM)

With the new staff, I'm betting they'll be pretty geeked about all the stadium perks and amenities. I'm not sure how true the rumors are about Zim's disdain of all the tech wizardry, but if it's even partly true I bet the new staff will be giddy to dive into the wonderous techno-center we have. That's gotta be a refreshing change at least.

I'm starting to get excited for the draft, eager to see what strategy KAM uses. If we start trading back and stockpiling 6th and 7th rounders them I'm wondering if we're in the matrix or some level of inception. Red pill please!

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/27/2022 2:37:48 PM)

Regarding Zimmer: He came in and instigated some much-needed structure in regards to the team and installed a defense that, at the time, was top notch. For two years it looked like we were set up for success and all was well. Then... the little mistakes started creeping in. A poor timeout or lack of a timeout, the ridiculous commitment to the run, the MOAP started to surface earlier and earlier in the games, were some of the things I remember seeing. And if I brought things like this up I was greeted with a chorus of "IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ANYTHING GOING ON THEN YOU DISAGREE WITH ZIMMER AND HE'S A GOD AND WILL WIN 7000 SUPER BOWLS AND WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT FOOTBALL THAT IMMORTAL AND ALMIGHTY ZIMMER DOESN'T KNOW?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Could Zimmer have won in the Grant, Lombardi era? No. The reason? Because he fails to adapt his gameplan and strategy while some of his peers do. His defense was lights out right off the bat but fell off after opposing teams figured it out. Opposing teams figuring things out is not unique to just Zimmer. Every coach gets his stuff figured out by others. The good ones then adjust. Zimmer wouldn't do it and opposing coaches exploited that - the good ones anyway. Opposing coaches in the Grant/Lombardi era would have done the same thing. If winning in that era was as simple as frowning a lot and running the ball too much then there would have been an NFL coaching legend on every team.

Zimmer can go pound sand. I rank him in the same tier as Brad Childress.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/27/2022 6:27:58 PM)

Zimmer style attributes that led to some success, attention to detail, be at this spot, my way or the highway, etc, etc, eventually became his downfall.

I think that was just one thing. The coaching staff was way worse as the years went on and for some reason their was loyalty to players that Zimmer helped find in the draft and FA. Rhodes, Alexander, Barr, Waynes, and less to players drafted/signed that he didn’t find such as Bynum, Cousins, and in general money spent on offense.

Some of that could be Spielman also.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/27/2022 9:12:18 PM)

From a Daily Norseman poster:

They’ll mostly play a 6-man box in front of nickel DBs, with this personnel grouping:
2 DL: big DTs like Phillips and Tomlinson, though one of them might line up at 5-tech and could be called a 3-4 DE
2 edge rushers: Hunter, Smith and the other DEs from Zimmer’s scheme, but now called OLBs
2 LBs: Kendricks and Hicks, now called ILBs but basically similar to the roles Kendricks and Barr played in nickel under Zimmer

You could call that a 2-4, counting the edge rushers as OLBs. It’ll look very similar to the Vikings usual 4-2 front under Zimmer, but with the edge rushers standing up.

On 3rd downs, Fangio (in Chicago and Denver) mostly stuck with the same personnel (2 DL, 2 OLB, 2 ILB). He didn’t bring in an extra edge rusher, like Zimmer often did (Robison would kick inside on 3rd downs in 2017 and Hunter would come in at DE), but would rotate in better pass rushers at the DT positions. For the Vikings this year, that might mean taking off Tomlinson and Phillips on 3rd down and bringing in Watts and Lynch (or someone they add, like maybe they re-sign Sheldon Richardson for this role). Outside Watts/Lynch would be the edge rushers, Hunter and Smith as usual.

On the other hand, the Vikings defense this year won’t only be based on the Fangio system, Mike Pettine is involved as well. And Pettine (as Vikings fans surely remember from 2019) liked to line up his best edge rusher, Za’Darius Smith, over the IOL on 3rd downs, bringing in Rashan Gary as an extra edge rusher / OLB. For the Vikings this year, that would mean pushing ZS inside next to just one DL (Watts is their best DT-sized pass rusher), and bringing in Wonnum (or hopefully someone better who they draft this year) opposite Hunter.

That’s all still the nickel DB packages.

In base packages, in front of 4 DBs, they’ll usually play a standard 3-4 personnel grouping: 3 DL (Phillips, Tomlinson, Watts), 2 OLB (Hunter, Smith) and 2 ILB (Kendricks and Hicks). but even though that’s called “base”, they don’t use it much — Fangio played in base about 30% of snaps with the Bears and Broncos, and Pettine even less often in Green Bay.

In terms of needs…

They’re in decent shape on the DL with these 4: Tomlinson, Phillips, Watts and Lynch. Watts and Lynch might both be better as 5-techs (Lynch especially, that’s more like the role he played at Baylor) than they were as 1-tech DTs in the 4-3. They could use a 5th guy for depth especially if that’s a decent pass rusher (Sheldon Richardson?). Maybe Jaylen Twyman comes back? He might be a good 3rd down pass rusher, but he hasn’t played football in 2 years. They should probably draft one since Tomlinson and Watts are both UFAs this year, and Lynch hasn’t been much good in the NFL, but that’s not a high priority. They could take a developmental guy on day 3.

They’re in excellent shape with their starting OLBs. Hunter and Smith are one of the best pairings in the league. They could use an upgrade over Wonnum as a 3rd pass rusher (I don’t think he’s good at all). They might be able to get a blue chip pass rusher in round 2 this year, it’s a deep class. It’s probably notable that the first thing Pettine did in GB was sign Za’Darius and Preston Smith, and then draft Rashan Gary at #12. So don’t be surprised if they take Travon Walker (if he falls) or more realistically Jermaine Johnson. I do think Wonnum can stick on the roster as a 3-4 OLB (he’s good in space, and plays like a linebacker anyway). The rest of their leftover 4-3 DEs may not make a smooth transition to the 3-4 OLB role (Willekes and Jones especially are probably just pure DEs). Maybe Janarius Robinson can, and be their 4th or 5th guy.

The starting ILBs are also set, with Kendricks and Hicks. They do need better depth than Troy Dye and Blake Lynch, and it’d be good to find someone who might develop given their starters are 30 years old already. It’s worth pointing out that Fangio and Pettine have never emphasized LB depth beyond late round picks and special teams guys. Pettine in particular liked to use a lot of dime (6 DBs) which limits the LB snaps. But given that the Vikings hardly have any DBs as it is, I think they’ll mostly play 2 ILBs with nickel, much as Zimmer did.

So there isn’t a lot they absolutely have to add to the front 7 this year except for an upgrade to Wonnum (never miss the chance to draft a blue chip pass rusher). But they can use depth at DL and LB too, especially with some uncertainty if this year’s starters will still be around next year and beyond.

One takeaway from Kevin O’Connell’s media session at the NFL meetings: He’s really excited about the Danielle Hunter/Za’Darius Smith combo and how the #Vikings can move them around to create favorable matchups. “That’s why we’ve got Mike Pettine, Mike Smith, Chris Rumph.” (1/2)

“These guys have been in places where we don’t have to just always line up with our hand in the ground at the DE spots, rushing the passer on a straight line. That’s where scheme comes into play. We can move these guys. They’re movable pieces, both Danielle and Za’Darius.” (2/2)

Kevin O'Connell said there will be an open competition at right guard for the Vikings. New signee Jesse Davis may be the frontrunner but he's not being handed the job.

Here's what Kevin O'Connell said when asked about the lack of changes from a Vikings roster that missed the playoffs the last two years:

"Although sometimes things may not jump out as changing the roster, we’ve made some additions that I think will have a big-time impact."

I like what I'm hearing, especially as it pertained to Hunter and ZSmith. That being said if Garrett Bradbury is the starting center on opening day this season then we've failed - again.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/29/2022 11:57:13 AM)

This is pretty refreshing also:
Ben Goessling
@BenGoessling
O’Connell added there might be some weeks he turns the offense over to coordinator Wes Phillips “and I’ll go be a defensive coach that week.”

“That’s the good part about being a head coach now: You can be in different rooms when you want, and nobody can say anything to you.”

Mark Wilf: "Our goals are the same as every year and I'm more excited than ever that we can compete at the highest level." [we expect completely different results, even though the roster is the same and we were intimately involved in hiring both, the old and new regimes]

Mark Wilf: "We’ve been very strategic and intentional and disciplined in how we’re approaching free agency." [mac&cheese, ramen, cereal ... spice it up with a Jack-in-the-Box taco once awhile ...this college diet off-season is not about wise budgetary choices, there's just no other choice]

Chad Graff: Doesn't sound like Irv Smith Jr. will do too much on the field this spring as he works his way back from a season-ending meniscus injury. [no worries, our non-Sugarman adjusted recovery period is down from two years to 8 weeks]

O'Connell: "We’re going to be smart with Irv. There’s no reason why he can’t hit the ground running from a mental perspective this spring." [Like Cousins, Irv will be listening and writing down stuff ... just not in the huddle during the season like Cousins]
