ORIGINAL: Bill Jandro Vikings sign Johnathan Bullard Waive Kenny Willekes Darren Wolfson @DWolfsonKSTP 1-yr deal for new #Vikings DL Jonathan Bullard. Big connection is with defensive line coach Chris Rumph. They were together with the Florida Gators. Rumph a big reason why Bullard is here. DC Ed Donatell was on Bears staff when Bullard was there, as well. So is Bullard, like, a thing? 5 seasons, 3 1/2 career sacks, has done next to nothing the last 2 seasons. Doesn't seem like he is a thing. This is another “raise the floor” signing for the Vikings, which fits what I think is their plan this year to improve the bottom half of the roster while leaving most of the core veteran starters in place. I’ve been hoping they’d sign another 5-tech DL, like Sheldon Richardson. Bullard hasn’t been as good as Richardson, but he’s 3 years younger (29 this year) and probably cheaper (this will likely be a vet minimum signing with little or no guarantees). I didn’t like the idea of going into the year with the 4th best DL on the depth chart being one of James Lynch (who might not really be an NFL player, depending on how he does changing positions back to 5-tech, or staying at DT despite his small frame), injury reclamation project Jullian Taylor (who hasn’t played since 2019), 2nd year project Jaylen Twyman (who hasn’t played since college in 2019), or rookie project Esezi Otomewo (who’s going to be changing positions). Now they can keep 2 of those guys instead of 3, and the rookie will have to beat out a veteran to make the team. Bullard is not a project. He’s a decent rotational backup NFL player who knows the scheme and has no injury concerns. He’s nothing special, but he may have some good football left, getting back with coaches who know him and can put him to good use. No injury concerns, yet he has only played 15 of a possible 33 games in the last 2 seasons on a middling 2020 Seattle defense, and a BAD 2021 Atlanta defense. Extreme meh.
