ORIGINAL: Ricky J Ben Goessling @GoesslingStrib 1h Before today, Kirk Cousins had attempted 30 passes with the #Vikings tied or trailing by eight points or less in the final two minutes. No other NFL QB had attempted more than 15. He was 4/5 for 30 yards on the Vikings’ 2-min drive today. In OT, he was 5/5 for 50 yards and a TD. - can we get Brad to comment on this one? Cousins has run very efficient and effective two minute drills in every game this year. On a couple the kicker ****ed it all up. Brad, who couldn't shut the **** up about how bad KC was in the 2 minute drill, has been remarkably silent about it since the season started. I'll play devil's advocate. Overtime isn't the last two minutes of a half and how many points did we score while going four of five for 30 yards yesterday? Disclaimer - Kirk has been mostly excellent this season. Second disclaimer - in the past he was very poor in the final two minutes of halves. That is spot on, not just playing devil's ... the wild Cousins hyperbole in here is getting out of hand (see KGs post above about 'unprecedented in history') Really? Cousins the all-time best field goal position getter ... the best ever 3-3 qb ... the best ever qb to not score 4th qtr TDs in 4 out of 6 games to start a season ... huzzah! The offense is scoring and Cousins has been outstanding. Whatever synapse popped off in his brain over the summer - Cousins has carried us in every game. He still waters us down IMO from building on leads and from going for the throat. He's the kid that methodically opens x-mas presents, folds up the wrapping paper for next year, then reads the owners manual before filling his squirt gun and asking his siblings about the 'rules of engagement'. He'll never just be a killer with a squirt gun like the top 5 or 6 QBs in this league that are in a race to unload their bullets (water) and hurt (wet) you as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Everybody wants to point to Zimmer and the defense for throttling down our games to a make or break final drive ... they should and they do get the lion's share of blame ... but the offense gets some blame. Zimmer doesn't call the plays and doesn't choose which option to throw to ... Cousins and the offense deserve credit for being efficient and good enough to keep us in every game ... they also get blame for being too rigid in their approach, putting too much emphasis on sustaining drives and settling for 3 ... and not enough emphasis on attacking the defense or for going for 7. We are 3-3; 3-3 is what we are. A lot of this is pretty spot on, but I'll disagree with the bolded. Zimmer is the one pulling back on the throttle, not Cousins. Zim has the cookbook page, about getting the lead and running the ball to kill the clock, laminated. The Vikings are never more predictable and conservative than when they have a lead in the second half. Run the ball. Short passes. Play it safe. Kill the clock. It's all part of his playing to not lose instead of playing to win mentality. Zimmer may not call the plays directly, but Kubiak has no doubt about what plays he is supposed to call in those situations. remember the bone-headed pass that became a lateral, yesterday? - is that what knocked us out of field goal range? i can't remember...cousins had almost zero pressure from Carolina...the stars aligned for kirk and he threw some nice passes...what did he do for us against Cleveland?....
