Bears just saved the Raiders a fortune.

In waiving the right tackle, the Raiders will take a $7.9 million hit to their salary cap if no other team claims him. Per Over The Cap, Leatherwood's $14.39 million salary was fully guaranteed.

Leatherwood was coming off a rookie year in which Pro Football Focus ranked him No. 80 out of 82 guards in the NFL and dead last among guards who played at least 1,000 snaps. This preseason, which included an ill-fated move to right tackle, wasn't going much better.

Every team in the NFL reportedly turned the Raiders down in trade talks before the team cut him loose.

The Raiders drafted Leatherwood out of Alabama thinking they were getting their right tackle of the future. That was to the surprise of most NFL draft media, who almost universally didn't see Leatherwood as a first-rounder or were skeptical about him sticking at tackle, where he played for the Crimson Tide. Yahoo Sports' Eric Edholm ranked him as the No. 46 overall prospect and said a move to guard was possible.

Then-Raiders general manager Mike Mayock conceded the pick would be controversial, but revealed head coach Jon Gruden and offensive line coach Tom Cable loved him as a prospect. Mayock also said Leatherwood was the highest overall player remaining on their board.

Seahawks are looking to add Mannion to their PS.

Glad to see weak cogs get moved right out.

We believe the Vikings are working on acquiring a new Center. Stay tuned

This is my hope, too...not sure who "VikeFans" are, or whether there is anything to back this up, but it is our biggest hole

Certainly Suh would help, but it feels like these resources are better used at C rather than DL

Agree, I think C and TE #2 are probably the areas of most need right now.

I would put slot CB ahead of TE2.

Its hard to argue with CB … I think we are barely avg and thats if Booth gets healthy and comes through.

That being said, TE has been obnoxiously disregarded so far. I know McVey’s offense doesn’t have a big role supposedly. Although I look forward to Irv having a solid year … he’s no iron man and all we have backing him is an OL essentially and Johnny Nepotism Mundt.

Whose son is Johnny? I think TE2 as a trouble spot is a bit of a reach. It's always better to have better players at every level, but what position would you sacrifice at to get a slightly better TE2?

KOC pulled ex-Ram Johnny out of his pants when he got here.

So .. dont address it at all because you cant have solid depth everywhere?

No, that aint it. Thats just asking to shoot yourself in the foot. If Irv goes down … again … or doesnt produce … as projected … you are giving the defense an extra lb cb or s for coverage because mundt ellefson are going to be covered by the dt, after he rushes the passer.

Its not an either/or thing … almost any close-to-roster caliber TE would upgrade our bottomless light-bending te depth.

Based on what?

Based on any objective opinion that aims a little higher than … wait … what were their names?

Its one thing to settle for what you have … see mannion mond … and go from there. Its another to just settle for what you have. In March.

Looks like Vikings castoffs are in demand. The Bears getting cream of the crop waiver drops. Does waiver priority reset after a team claims a player and they have to go to the back of the line or can the team with the highest waiver priority take everybody they want?

He must have pictures of KOC and the entire Rams coaching staff to have held onto a job so long.

Almost 28 years old, been with the Rams in some form since 2017 (PS, Roster, Reserve/Future Contract, one year contracts). Career 10 receptions, 93 yards, 0 TDs.

That warranted a 2 year deal with us.

The guarantees on the deal are low. It seems that they knew what they want out of a backup TE and knew he fits the bill. If you can do better in the draft or other means, great, but at a minimum they have a guy who will give them what they absolutely need, which is probably not a lot.

‘Probably not a lot’.

So … we agree?

I get having shallow depth at some positions. I object to the proverbial ‘like targeting your arrows for the mushiest banana’.

No, I dont know what that means either but since we are not going to agree on this, I’ll wander off into inscrutability …

You research it, its not worth my time to argue the obvious physical universe with someone that eont concede free agency, the draft, trades, and cutdowns into their personnel development strategy.

Move on. I hope Irv is who we want him to be for the whole season.

The little bit we saved yesterday was for this.

Big whoop.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/31/2022 1:17:50 PM)

I'd add Randy Moss' kid to the PS. Was waived by the Bengals yesterday.

As a redshirt junior, Moss finished the season with 47 receptions for 570 receiving yards, both school records for tight ends, and four touchdowns. Moss caught four passes for 99 yards and scored a touchdown on a 62-yard reception against Oklahoma in the 2019 Peach Bowl. In the 2020 National Championship Game, he scored two touchdowns on five receptions for 36 yards. His two scores allowed quarterback and 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow to tie and break the NCAA single season record for touchdown passes.

------------

Family lineage and brand awareness playing with Joe Burrow and LSU make it easy to overshoot expectations for Moss as a dynamic pass-catcher, but tape study shows he's actually more skilled as a run blocker. He has great hands and good body control, but he's an average athlete who benefited from rub routes and off coverage to find plenty of open-window catches. He will get after it as a run blocker, using above-average technique and an impressive ability to strain and sustain against bigger opponents. He could struggle to uncover against tight man, but his hybrid TE/H-back versatility and run-blocking prowess could lock him into a TE3 role.

------------

[LSU’s Thaddeus Moss is a compact, powerfully built tight end prospect with a very good thickness in his upper and lower body. Moss lined up at a variety of positions in the LSU offense, playing out of tight end, wide receiver, slot receiver, and H-back alignments. He is primarily a blocker in LSU’s offense, and shows very good technique executing his blocks. Moss plays with good knee bend and pad level to maximize his natural leverage and play strength. He routinely fires his punch into defenders’ chest plates to secure inside leverage and gain control. He also shows very good play strength in sustaining his blocks through the whistle, with the ability to create movement at the line of scrimmage. Moss has very good competitive toughness as a blocker, standing up against bigger linemen and giving a second-effort to re-anchor against power rushes when necessary.

Moss shows a good understanding of blocking assignments as a pass protector and can be relied upon to block rush linebackers. He also does a good job of executing chip blocks when he releases into routes.

Moss has good, reliable hands as a pass catcher. He presents a good target for his quarterback, tracks the ball well, and extends to pluck the ball out of the air away from his frame. He also shows very good body control to contort and make difficult catches or secure the catch going out of bounds. Moss’ leverage and play strength make his routes difficult for most coverage players to disrupt, and he can be difficult for lone defenders to tackle in space.

Moss’ greatest weakness is his lack of athleticism. He shows definite lower-body stiffness and a lack of quickness and agility which hamper his route running. Moss also lacks speed on vertical routes or in the open field. Suffered a broken foot (fifth metatarsal) in 2018 that required a pair of surgeries.

Thaddeus Moss projects as back-up tight end for most teams, but could be a number two — and second starting — tight end for a team that uses a scheme based on 12-personnel packages.

Moss’ greatest value will likely be for teams that feature run-heavy or vertical offenses. He is a very good blocker in both the running and passing game, and a capable-enough receiver to bring value as a check-down option. Moss’ lack of athleticism will prevent him from being a true mis-match, and that will hurt his value in the eyes of many offenses. However, his blocking ability absolutely has a place in the modern NFL. If he can become adept at finding voids in coverage, Moss’ hands and body control should allow him to become a reliable chain-mover in the passing game.

Teams that have an “H-Back” position in their offense could be particularly interested in Moss. His ability to line up in the backfield as well as both a detached and in-line tight end could allow offenses to show multiple looks out of similar personnel packages./i]
