Dumba had his usual Dumbo plays that we have come to expect, but at least they didn't cost us too badly.
This team seems to be better than I was expecting this year and even if things level off some, they sure are fun to watch.

So much depth even in the minors

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (11/28/2021 9:09:11 PM)

Yeap. Phil beat me too it. Crazy good depth. Spurg goes down and we have the luxury of bringing up Benn. That a massive difference from years past.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (11/29/2021 8:16:30 AM)

As Phil said, we have young guys in Iowa just chomping at the bit to get a chance with the big club as well.
I really like what Guerin is doing with this team and think we will be just fine even with those couple of years of cap hell coming up.

Another great win today. Only issue I have was Dumba’s dumbass stat padding hero hockey with the empty net. We had a line that was on the ice for over 2 minutes and he goes for the home run from behind the net 🤬

Well, two guys had tried before and missed wide, so whoever could put one in the net was fine with me. It took all of the pressure off those last seconds, worrying that there would be a last-second tying goal. I'm not a Dumba fan, but I was glad he did that.

No offense but disagree 100%. You have to understand the context of the situation. Those guys could barely move at that point. Being pinned down in your zone for that long after 55+ minutes of hockey is brutal. You have to be smart. Thank God we still had a TO to use or it would have been OT. Be smart and not a glory hunter.

Brodin, for example, had the exact same chance and threw it 200 feet in the air to try and clear the zone without getting an icing.

I didn't catch any post game stuff as I had the Vikings started on my phone when the game ended and switched over ASAP. I read in the Strib this AM where Dean commented on it. That tells me that someone else questioned him on it. Why else would he even bother? It wasn't specific to Dumba but trying that in general.

A quote from the Strib yesterday:

Green light for empty-net goals
Marcus Foligno's empty-netter with 17 seconds left in the third period came from the neutral zone, 94 feet away from the Tampa Bay net, and Wild players have the green light to go for chances like that even in one-goal games.

"Why wouldn't you?" Evason said. "You got an open shot at the net that's empty, take it. At any point if you don't have it and you have to go through somebody, then of course not. Then we're going to chip it out.

"But if you have a clear lane and you think you can score a goal from there, these guys are in the NHL. Shoot it at the net."

I agree to a point Jeff, but we luckily had a TO in hand and didn't even need to use because Tampa's top guns were gassed too, so they used theirs.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (11/29/2021 3:40:24 PM)

For sure, there's a time and place for it. IMO it's not from your own net when you've been chasing 6 on 5 for over 2 minutes. If it's fresh legs, go for it. This particular instance was stupid. It worked out so i'm not too worked up about it by any means. That was the quote I was referring to BTW.

The latest from the Strib:

Mikko Koivu's No. 9 jersey will be first player number retired by Wild
The former longtime Wild captain will have his jersey retired on March 13 before the Wild faces the Predators at Xcel Energy Center.

Mikko Koivu's No.9 is going up to the rafters of Xcel Energy Center.

The former longtime Wild captain will become the first player in team history to have his jersey number retired when the Wild recognizes Koivu on Saturday, March 13, during a pregame ceremony before hosting Nashville in St. Paul.

"Mikko did so many great things for our organization on the ice and in our community during his 15-year career here," Wild owner Craig Leipold said in a statement released by the team. "He truly deserves this honor."

Koivu retired from the NHL in February after 16 seasons, most of which were played with the Wild.

He and the team parted ways during the 2020 offseason when the Wild decided not to bring back Koivu once his contract expired, ending a partnership that dated back to 2001, when the Wild drafted him sixth overall.

As a free agent, Koivu signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets but played just seven games before wrapping up his NHL career. Koivu, who continues to live in the Twin Cities, will address the media on Tuesday, but the 38-year-old said at the time of his retirement that he would embrace the opportunity to get back in front of Wild fans.

"I will be back in Minnesota at some point," Koivu said in February. "That is a very special bond for me personally. All the years that I spent there, the way the fans always treated me and also the teams that I was with, the feeling going to the Xcel Energy [Center] and just the energy that you had in the building, you feel like you're one of them.

"So, I will never forget that and for sure I'll be back there — just obviously in a different role than I'm used to, but I will enjoy that."

After 1,028 regular-season appearances with the Wild, Koivu is the franchise's all-time leader in games played and several other categories including assists (504) and points (709) while ranking second in goals (205) and third in game-winners (33).

A one-time Selke Trophy finalist as the league's best defensive forward, the Finnish native was the 55th player in NHL history to skate in his first 1,000 games with the same team. He debuted with the Wild on Nov. 5, 2005, at San Jose, and logged his last game on Aug. 7, 2020, vs. Vancouver in the qualifying-round of the playoffs. Koivu became the team's first full-time captain on Oct.20, 2009 and was active in the community, sponsoring two private patient rooms in the Neuroscience and Epilepsy Center at Children's Minnesota.

"No one worked harder than Mikko during his time with the Minnesota Wild," General Manger Bill Guerin said in a statement. "He was a fiery competitor and a fantastic captain both on and off the ice … but the impact he made in our community and the connections he made with Wild fans will live on forever."

Should be Zholtok's IMO.

4-1 after 2 to the gg’s. Started out a bit slow but a very good 2nd

First period was pretty close but we took over after that. A solid win overall.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/1/2021 6:01:54 PM)

Yup, a poor 1st led to very workman like 2nd period where we took over the game and that continued in the 3rd.
This team is just so much fun to watch and they are all getting on the scoreboard.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 9:19:02 AM)

SMF believes the key is that the Wild roll with an effective four line attack. It allows them to always have fresh legs and maintain pace. Other teams struggle with it.

Can't argue with that!

Aligns with how good we are late in games as well.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 12:15:45 PM)

These definitely aren't your father's plodding, neutral zone trapping Wild.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 12:18:43 PM)

Need to sort the PP out or else it won't matter in crunch time.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 2:18:45 PM)

Last season we had a bad PP stretch and it evened out towards the end, so let's hope that happens again.
The main thing is having it clicking when the playoffs start.

kevinemmer -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 4:13:12 PM)

I was telling my son last game that nothing stops our 5-on-5 momentum like our PP.

Too happy to pass around the perimeter playing keep-away,
instead of shooting and crashing.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 7:30:24 PM)

Pitlick with an awesome goal. 2-0 good guys.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021/2022 Season (12/2/2021 8:16:17 PM)

Kaprizov with his second of the night pushes it to 3-0 and the Wilfd give it right back. Back on our heels a bit in the second.

Anyone hear why Kahkonen got the start instead of Talbot?

Nice 5-2 victory.

Devil's get pissy at Bjugstad for a shot at the horn. [&o]

Maybe to save Talbot for the match-up against Toronto.

From Russo:

Thursday night, instead of coming back with No. 1 goalie Cam Talbot, particularly since Talbot stole the Wild two points last week in New Jersey, Evason and his staff decided to play Kahkonen, rewarding him for the Arizona win and giving Talbot an extra game off probably so he can really rest up for the likely heavy workload coming with consecutive games against Toronto and Edmonton.

Thanks for passing it a long. Nice to hear the reason wasn't injury or covid and that Kahkonen rewarded the team with another solid effort.
