i'll admit it, i figured they were cutting him a check tomorrow....

Ben Goessling@BenGoessling

A couple things to know about Danielle Hunter’s $18M roster bonus:

—While it becomes guaranteed this weekend, he still has to report to training camp on time to earn it.

—First $6M paid w/in 10 days of camp report date.

—Vikings still have right to convert it to SB at any time

.

So 25.8 and 8.6 M cap hits the next two years?

According to the irrefutable Sportrac: Hunter drops from #2 cap hit for DEs in 2022 (26.1), to #24 in 2023 (8.6M), to #34 in 2024 (1.1M) [2 spots below our own 'ascending from IR' youngster Janarius Robinson]

No problem here, we'll just all get along and ride this one out!

At the risk of negating the Robinson comparison, 2024 (and 2025) is on the books just to have a placeholder for restructured money.

this means today...we have to do it....

Chris Tomasson@christomasson
According to cap analyst Jason Fitzgerald, #Vikings will have to make decision on if they want to convert Danielle Hunter's $18 million roster bonus to signing bonus and spread it out by deadline of when it is due (5th day of new league year). They can do that without his consent.

always thought he was overrated....

Very. Very. Over-rated.

It's not happening.

Not much better than Wonnum statistically (last year).

Not that we couldn't use another veteran to rotate with our plethora of DE youngsters ...

It would be wildly uncharacteristic of our current trends.

It is a better debate than Brad's tired old DE vs CB argument.

One, he's 29, there's plenty of evidence of what and who he is. Two, we don't even know what refurbished rectified repaired reconditioned Hunter will bring this season.

Nobody spent more money on defensive linemen than Houston from 2014-18 with Clowney and Watt (also Wilfork for a few years). You ever see them winning any titles? Couldn't cover anyone when it mattered.

No, he's rated.

simply rated

No under or over

He moves from team to team every year. There is a reason he can't stick.

He's just average.

He was one of the highest rated or at least hyped DEs coming out of college, of the decade. Drafted first overall.

Over-rated by a mile.

Smith's original deal with the #Ravens fell apart. Could he stay in the NFC North instead?

I could endure some dead cap in future if we get to see an Ex Packer blindside Rodgers.

David Levine -> RE: 2022 Free Agency (3/21/2022 2:07:20 PM)

Smith had agreed to a 4-year, $35 million deal with the Ravens, only to back out of the deal days later- reportedly because he saw the bigger deals that Von Miller and Chandler Jones got.

Spotrac estimates Smith’s market value at $16.7 million/year, considerably more than what the Ravens offered. Given the Vikings salary cap space, signing Smith at that rate would eat up most of their available cap space (estimated around $20 million), barring a significant back-loading of the contract, which would seem likely given the Vikings other needs.

The Packers let Za’Darius Smith go earlier this year to reduce their salary cap, but there were also rumors that the relationship between Smith and the Packers had deteriorated over the past year, which he missed due to a back injury. He had back surgery last September.

The Chiefs and Cowboys are also reportedly making a push to land Smith, so it’s not certain that the Vikings will be able to sign him. The Chiefs are worse off than the Vikings in terms of salary cap space, but the Cowboys are in slightly better shape.

xavier rhodes rated about as well as peterson last season and we could probably sign him for $2-3mm/yr...maybe sign rhodes and peterson for $6-7mm/yr - collectively....

sign jc tretter....

sign za'darius....

draft a guard in the 3rd to complete with davis, and coach the hell out of udoh/schlottmann/hinton...I'm going to guess that wyatt davis is the answer at rg for the next several years....
