We basically need to be a contender the next handful of years for this to make any sense.

Contender? Hell, we need to win a championship for this to make sense.

Absolutely.

Nearly a half billion dollars for two bigs as well as four lost first rounders (with the obligatory loss of 'several' players that always gets thrown in) are part of this era. It will be labeled a failure even if you made it to several finals but didn't walk away with even just one chip.

Will it? For most franchises I’d say that. But we’ve made it out of the 1st round one time in 30 years.

And we’ve literally mattered in the scope of the NBA one single year.

If we make “several finals” it’ll be, by far, the peak of this franchise.

Nationally, it would be ammo for another super team failure with a blurb at the end ~ the pinnacle of the franchise along with the words "low bar".

Locally, it's fond memories of being >that< close, and will spur debates about whether the KG-led teams could have competed against them... and whether the team should accommodate Ant's wishes to be traded [8|]

Bill Jandro -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 1:46:57 PM)

Rudy with 7'10" standing reach?

That's freakish.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 1:53:49 PM)

But in general I think the sky is the limit for the Wolves.

There is some concern with 2 7fters in the modern NBA. This is a wing driven league. If opponents go small, how do we counter. One of our 2 expensive bigs might have to sit.

What I find most promising is how Cleveland was absolutely killing teams with 2 (and even 3) bigs before they got decimated with injuries.

If opponents go small, how do they defend us?

Matt Lang -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 3:26:49 PM)

Ok I’m more excited today, even if I still think we included 1 pick too many. We’ve added a superstar and are going to be really interesting. Plus when this version of the wolves ends in a few yrs, we still have time to retool and build a second contender around Ant. So now we have 2 windows.

I'm trying to talk myself off the ledge on this deal. The players we sent out are all role players and very replaceable. Vando is the only one I will really miss and they essentially replaced him with Anderson. Utah supposedly wanted McDaniels and Connolly wouldn't give him up. I assume that had something to do with the amount of first round picks in the deal.

The Wolves got a lot better in the short term. I don't know if Gobert makes them enough better to make it worthwhile.

Rudy is extremely good according to the stats. Particularly the advanced ones. Both offensively and defensively. IMO we are a lock for top 4 and home court advantage and with a couple breaks we can be #1 and win it all.

kgdabom -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 5:12:24 PM)

Right, the quality of the players we gave wasn't much. If the starting 5 stays pretty healthy we should be fine. If we get many injuries we could be pretty thin quickly. If this group is successful the next few picks will be late 1st rounders.

There is some concern with 2 7fters in the modern NBA. This is a wing driven league. If opponents go small, how do we counter. One of our 2 expensive bigs might have to sit.

McDaniels needs to blossom.

No they won't. Small ball is a failed experiment. We will obliterate teams that try it.

On the 7 footers, I think Towns makes it work with his ability to put the ball on the floor and hit the 3. Gobert is also a very athletic big.

The amount of assets we gave up is jaw dropping.

Like DL mentioned that kind of package should get Durrant.

Rudy Gobert? You got to be kidding me.

A couple of points:

Durant is about 4 years older than Gobert and has played a total of 90 games in the last 3 years.
We are talking about 4 picks that will likely be in the 25-32 range.

The Wolves gambled 5 picks to create a 5+ year window with a core of KAT, Ant and Gobert. Only time will tell if it was worth it.

Given my choice of Durant or Gobert I'd take Gobert.

I've seen 9'7" to 9'9"

If you want it to be really freakish, you can add 2 feet to that.

His wingspan is 7’9.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 7:12:54 PM)

We’re suddenly huge.

Wingspan measurements of the starting five:

D’Angelo Russell - 6’10”
Anthony Edwards - 6’9”
Jaden McDaniels - 7’0”
Karl-Anthony Towns - 7’4”
Rudy Gobert - 7’9”

Steve Lentz -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/2/2022 9:38:39 PM)

We have become a very dangerous team. VERY DANGEROUS!!!
Will miss Bev and his fire, but we have some unbelievable talent in the starting 5. Hopefully we will have enough depth.

Are we confusing wingspan with standing reach? 7’10 sounds more like a wingspan.

Edit: Yes I checked. His wingspan is 7’9. His standing reach is 9’9.

wrh -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/3/2022 12:48:56 PM)

not surprising looks like Josh Okogie is moving on. Reported one year signing with Phoenix. Curious to see how much money he got.

It's the minimum. He's a depth signing as they're trying to create a package to trade for Durant.

David Levine -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/3/2022 12:54:24 PM)

Besides all the first round picks, we've also traded away our next FIVE 2nd rounders.

But we do have two 2nds coming in: We get NY's 2023, and in 2026 we get the least favorable from Indiana, Miami or San Antonio.

Fortunately you can always buy 2nd rounders...

2023 second round draft pick to Memphis
Minnesota's 2023 2nd round pick to Memphis [Memphis-Minnesota, 6/24/2022]

2024 second round draft pick to Oklahoma City or Denver
Denver will receive the more favorable of Charlotte's 2024 2nd round pick and Minnesota's 2024 2nd round pick and Oklahoma City will receive the less favorable of the two (via Charlotte to New Orleans to Oklahoma City; via Oklahoma City to Denver) [Charlotte-New Orleans, 11/19/2020; Minnesota-New York-Oklahoma City, 11/20/2020; Denver-Milwaukee-New Orleans-Oklahoma City, 11/23/2020; Denver-Oklahoma City, 6/23/2022]

2025 second round draft pick to Houston
Minnesota's 2025 2nd round pick to Houston [Houston-Minnesota, 6/24/2022]

2026 second round draft pick to New York
Minnesota's 2026 2nd round pick to New York [Minnesota-New York, 11/24/2020]

2027 second round draft pick to Houston
Minnesota's 2027 2nd round pick to Houston [Houston-Minnesota, 6/24/2022]

Wow. This "OkAutopilot" has written a masterpiece about the trade in the comments. Its worth going through the whole thread as he keeps adding onto it.

Is standing reach flat footed or on tippy toes?

Bill Jandro -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/4/2022 8:39:36 AM)

The more I read about this trade the more I'm starting to like it.

Mere fact we traded for a star yet did not have to include one going out cannot be overlooked.

I was ok with running it back with a few tweaks but with such a tough WC we might have ended up as a play in team again.

This move jumps us up in to title contenders and makes the Wolves relevant for the first time in 20 years.

Looking forward to this season big time.

Pauldiercks1 -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/4/2022 9:50:25 AM)

We gave up a lot but in theory if we are very good it is mostly spare parts.
Honestly if this doesn't work out I'm still perfectly fine with it. When is the last time the Wolves made a move this big to try to win?? We are the team that ships out players for lesser value players.

I will never fault a team for being aggressive and going for it. Like the Viking and Herschel, it didn't work out at all but I'll not complain, they went for it, and I'd rather go for it and fail than sit around at average for 30 years.
I'm stoked about the possibilities for this Wolves team, It's the offseason and people are interested in the Wolves for a positive reason, that tells me we may have done something right. We have some very interesting pieces for Finch to mesh together this should be a lot of fun.

bstinger -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/4/2022 10:15:23 AM)

I'm glad we took a swing, hope it works out.

Was Gobert the best we could get with this type of haul?

Steve Lentz -> RE: Wolves 2022 Off Season and Draft (7/4/2022 10:22:48 AM)

Spot on!
We are relevant. We are in the discussion. Our coaching continues to improve. New owners spending some money and more talent than we probably have ever had. Time will tell, but I like the steps we've made to compete with anybody.
