I analyze my behaviour all the time. I can laugh at some of it but I'd like to be better.

A work friend I turned into a Vikings fan (from 0% interested in football) is a sight to behold. Full of faith and good hearted cheering. Super enthusiastic and totally positive. He reacts to the bad plays but goes right back to good.

Part of the difference is he's never been let down by the team...he doesn't know the pain. The other part is I'm a flawed human being who deals extremely poorly with disappointment.

Minnesota is an above average team that happens to have a glossy record.

- That record was helped by playing a string of backup QBs, having only seven pure road games in a 17 game season, extreme luck (for example the Bills fumbling in the EZ to survive a sure loss).

- They were massacred by Philly and Dallas. They played well against Buffalo in what was for Vikings fans just a great game.

- They routinely allow QBs - especially inexperienced QBs - to have career or near-career days because their pass defense is crap.

It's good to enjoy the ride and with incredible/one for the ages good fortune the season will continue well in the playoffs, but it looks like people have convinced themselves the 11-3 record is legit.

I agree, the record defies 'you are what your record says you are' ...

although I would add, we may not be considered upper echelon in other seasons but we stand toe to toe with most of this year's watered down contenders (in our conference). The illegitimacy is spread out wide like so much avocado oil mayonnaise.

The one or two teams in our conference that most people think are head and shoulders above the rest, have not been playing that well lately.

(Are Philly and Dal that much better than us or did they just catch us on a lousy game when they were at their best?)

I don't know. I mean, do the top AFC teams seem like they are playing at an unbeatable level this season? I don't think so.

A lot of this is up for grabs. More than usual.

Who knows if Philly and Dallas played great while we didn't, but we got our asses kicked.

Dak was 22-25, 276, 2 TDs, and they rushed for ~ 150 yards. 88% completion rate. Hurts was 26-31, 333, 1 TD, 1 Int (plus 2 rushing TDs), and they rushed for ~ 160 yards. 84% completion rate. Hurts in particular looked like he was casually tossing passes in practice. Pollard went nuts.

Anyway, in the last 5 games the Eagles are 5-0, 49ers are 5-0, Cowboys are 4-1, and we are 3-2. Some games were blowouts, some were down to the wire.

But overall it does look like a watered down season in terms of not having a host of top teams. Many teams are crap. And many games in the league schedule/lineup are crap.

Andrew Krammer:

*Patrick Peterson spoke candidly, as he does, today:

"It’s a learning curve, because if you think about it it is all our first year together. Obviously coach Ed has a scheme that he feels is best for the team but we also want to put your personnel in best position possible.

**What are those better situations? Talked to Jordan Hicks and Chandon Sullivan, and they both talked about diversifying the defense

Sullivan: "Our mindset now is we’re going to throw some zone in there and some man and some pressures to try to make it difficult for the QB."

***And no, Sullivan said he hasn't heard anything from the league about the touchdowns called back vs. the Colts. They should at least send a letter, no? "That wouldn't be enough," he quipped.

But absolutely hoping for the best.

And don't forget the obligatory "And I'll be rooting for them" add-on to the pseudo die-hard themes.

A look in the Game Day Thread seeing how people 'root' for the team week in and week out shows few stick through a quarter, half, or game without wanting things blown up right then and there. LMAO!

Yes 'hoping for the best' is cliche but I get tired of pointing out the low side of the equation all the time.

Not looking to make excuses for the ass-kicking. We were decisively inferior when we played both Phi and Dal.

I wish I could say we are now a different, more improved team since either game but since game 1 of the season, we have been the same thing ... mediocre quarters mixed with some great quarters or drives and not much in between.

Since playing us, Phi has struggled with Chi, Az, Indy, and Dal struggled with Hou two weeks ago and lost to the Jags Sunday.

Regardless of their records, they may have played their best game against us ... presumptuous of me since I don't watch their games much ... but at the very least they are no longer juggernaut automatic-loss in the playoffs for us. If we show up at all (unlike the first time).

More hope squeezed from diamond-hard callused-over longing.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/22/2022 12:16:22 PM)

We don't have to make excuses. We beat Buf! Oh, they fumbled in the endzone or else -- excuse! They also played with 12 with their butts in the endzone -- counter excuse. And some of those calls ... nvm, that's going too far.

Screw Philly! Irv - excuse! Still we had the luck of past years in that game, not 2022. Let's have another NFCCG rematch. I'm game.

Years ago, we would of been described as having moxie. Who isn't encouraged by the direction of the defense? Maybe I'm being fooled. Maybe the new aggressive attitude instead of constant 15 yard cushions is real. Wouldn't that be the coolest thing ever? If not all we'll have is excuses and maybes and next year and memories of a pretty cool ride.

Right, but it's crazy to be last in yards given up an 11-3. ha ha

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/22/2022 7:04:09 PM)

It all depends. If our D plays aggressively like the 2nd half we can beat anyone. If Ed D didn’t learn anything, we r 1 and done.

If I'm the Vikings I want Detroit to make the playoffs. With the Lions as the 6-seed they could knock off a team like San Francisco or Dallas on a good day. I don't see the Giants, Washington or Seattle doing that. The Vikings need some dominoes to fall in order to get to Philly. And Detroit has the potential to give the Eagles some problems. IMO, the Lions are the team that neither Philly, Dallas or San Francisco wants to see squeak into the playoffs.

Pretty sure Philly is locked in #1 spot. Vikings should be #2, SF #3. TB is locked into #4 and Dallas is #5. Dallas will travel to TB and if MN and SF are not upset at home, it's Dallas at Philly and SF vs. MN in the divisional playoffs. Dallas could easily beat Philly and then come back here in the NFCCG.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/23/2022 8:24:15 AM)

Philly would have to lose all 3 remaining games. Vikes aren't a lock for the 2 seed but if they get it Det would play them as a 7 seed. Obviously theyd still play SF second round but it wouldn't be at home with a 3 seed

A great scenario would be beating Dallas here for the SB - hopefully on some bs PI call, too - ha ha, that ought to get Todd fired up.

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/23/2022 10:00:39 AM)

Defense will have to have a metamorphosis for Vikings to win more than one playoff game. I think they will have a new DC next year.

KOC will need to go full blown pass and try and out score teams. Wasting valuable downs and possessions trying to establish the run will need to end.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/23/2022 10:09:18 AM)

People keep saying we don't have a chance to win a playoff game or more than one if our D doesn't dramatically improve. Are these other teams in this avg group of playoff teams dramatically improving as well? We're the ones with 11 wins, not Wash, Sea, TB, NYG, SF. Yes, SF appears to be pretty ok, but stop crowning their asses. They lost to shit teams and played a weak schedule - I mean that's what you all would say if it was the Vikings in their place ... no?

- But hey, I get it. It's learned behavior that's extremely hard to shake

Good points. I think we can win it all. Of course that involves winning 4 games in a row against increasingly better competition. It's unlikely, but it could happen.

Good story!

- Anyone else getting the vibe we're ready to beat some team (NYG?) real bad? Ok, maybe 2 by scores at least?

The 1-4-1 Giants over the last six games? Debatable at best.

Since the opener we've beaten one team by > 8 points. ONE.

Although, the Giants are coming off a Sunday night road game and have to travel to Minny while we last played on Saturday. That is a HUGE advantage for the Vikings I have already mentioned.

Conversely. coming off a historical comeback, why even mention that? Like when we 'beat' the Bills in an all-time game, we were hung out to dry 40-3 seven days later. Oh wait, it's the Giants not the Cowboys.

Your postings indicate you are a frontrunner. In fact, your posts have gone up exponentially as the season has gone on. Bandwagon is one adjective, but you refute things and stand behind the 11-3 record?

I don't think I stand by the 11-3 record as much as you think. "Why are we done in the first round?" Because it's the playoffs and these avg teams are now going to beat us? Don't mistake me for thinking we're moving on 'cause we're 11-3. I'm as pessimistic as anyone on the inside. I'm just not letting the if we don't improve we're "done!" remarks slide. Why? We've got to 11 wins this way, why all of a sudden are the Commanders or the Seahawks or the Lions going to take us out? BS!

Bandwagon!? Come on! Yes, I refute things, just like you do. I get a little irked at the, "It's the playoffs, we're going to get it now!"

Exponentially is correct. I'm on a pension and haven't haven't been driving part-time in over a month - I'm bored! But I'll cut back on posting if you think I should ;)

San Fran and Philly are the top two teams in the NFC for defense in yards per game and points allowed.

Their offenses are nothing to sneeze at either. That’s why it would take a miracle to beat them IMO with the worst defense in the NFC.

The path to this miracle is getting the two seed and get 49ers at home and Purdy turn into a Pumpkin under the bright lights.

I didn't say we were done in the first round, what an incredible leap! I'll excuse the rest of the post, not my circus, not my monkeys. To wit, the premise was about whether we can beat the lately hapless Giants by 2 scores at least. Which I tried to answer complete with data, but to which you went off the rails on... certainly nothing about the Giants.

Cue the low rating post. Pathetic.
