Matt what is your thoughts on pulling Berrios in a Rock Head moment.

My surprise was the lefty warming up in the 2nd inning.

It was pre-planned by the Blue Jays. They wanted to use all their bullets.

Dumb Plan.

The Twins pitching won out in the series but hopefully the Twins can move Polanco/Julien to 2B/DH and have Lewis at 3b next series.....their margin for error will be less.

I hate to say it but will Buck be available by Saturday against Valdez; we might be short a bat yet against the Astros.

TJSweens -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (10/5/2023 9:27:21 AM)

Based on watching Royce run to first, I would say he is a ways from playing in the field. Maybe later in the series.

Dan Gladden was flabbergasted that they were pulling him. He was essentially dominating us. Called it OVERMANAGING the moment it happened. I was calling it pulling a Rocco myself...I can see I wasn't the only one thinking that.

And it backfired on the Blue Jays.

Short history and the last time we faced Berrios proved that point...he shut us out last time we faced him.

Schneider should be on the hot seat firmly now.

That team is loaded with talent and they underachieved this year. Sure they are in the same division as perceived juggernauts Tampa and Baltimore and also perennial contenders Boston and the Empire of evil. but that much talent should have been far more competitive and now this overmanaging that ended their season should make him the object of intense scrutiny.

Two simple things surprised me. Batting Chapman 8th and Biggio 5th and not using Espinal or Schneider at 2B instead of Biggio. It won't be as glaring as pulling Berrios early but Biggio came up in a bunch of big spots; it was similar to batting Punto top 5 in the playoffs for the Twins.

Sounds like an overdependence on analytics. I've seen it here too.

larryboy -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (10/5/2023 10:42:41 AM)

My first thought when Berrios was pulled was that Schneider was trying the same plan as the Astros/Twins in 2020, where Astros pulled their starter for another starter. Instead, as others have noted, they pulled a Baldelli. Ironically, in 2020 Badelli pulled Berrios after 5 innings and 75 pitches and went to a shaky bullpen instead of another starter. I will say this, Badelli apparently learned a little from his mistake then, but I still question his lefty/righty substitutions to match to pitching changes. I think some players are not nearly as good as their average coming in as a pinch hitter, and you take out a strong bat instead.

There were a lot of plays in this series that were inches away from a disaster or blowout, but they broke for the Twins this time. The barely foul drive was reminiscent of the Mauer "foul" ball, was half expecting them to call it fair and need a review just to get symmetry with the earlier games. [&:]

I like Gladden as the color man. Very good insight and isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

When he does the play by play, good luck knowing what is going on. A pop up could turn into a home run and he never tells the score.

I drove the bus for the local football team last Friday night. I sit in the bus with my book, phone, food, etc. I can hear the announcer plain as day but I seldom have a feel for what's going on with the play/game. Some people have the hang of it, some don't

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (10/5/2023 11:34:17 AM)

So Arraez is out of the playoffs. It looked like the Marlins could have used more pitching...

The guy we got in trade...doing pretty good.

The trade that people should have been lambasting wasn't the offseason Arraez for Lopez trade.

It should be Jorge Lopez for Cano and Povich. That one was a disaster. Jorge was so bad we flipped him for the equally useless Floro.

Pablo was an exceptional pickup. Arraez did great for Miami. I have no complaints there.

My wife will often listen to the opposing team play by play on mlb.com. The only way Provus is better is when Gladden isn't there, otherwise even when he is doing the play by play the two of them get chatting about everything other than the game. My fantasy is to have them graded by someone charting the game based solely on their play by play, with pay cuts for their errors, omissions or late updates.

They had a guest once, believe it was Johnny Bench, and he did play by play for a bit - chatting but interrupted the story to keep current on the game. Provus and Gladden said something like Bench might take their jobs. My wife and I both thought that would be an outstanding idea. We only listen to them when we are in the car. Sad that EVERY other team has better play by play radio announcers. (In my opinion, of course)

MDK -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (10/5/2023 3:47:23 PM)

Johnny Bench was and is an idiot. Maybe a great player but an idiot. Remember reading an SI story about Bench. It was his wedding night. Honeymoon in the motel.....he had his buddies over and they played poker all night long. New wife was ignored.

From Wikipedia

Bench has been married four times. Once hailed as "baseball's most-eligible bachelor," he shed that distinction before the 1975 season when he married Vickie Chesser, a toothpaste model who had dated Joe Namath. Four days after they met, Bench proposed, and they were married on February 21, 1975.[68][69] Quickly, the pair realized they were incompatible, especially after Bench suggested that his wife accept Hustler magazine's offer for her to pose nude for $25,000.[70][71] They broke up at the end of the season (Bench reportedly said to her, "Now I'm done with two things I hate: baseball and you"), divorcing after just 13 months. "I tried. I even hand-squeezed orange juice," Chesser told Phil Donahue in December 1975. "I don't think either of us had any idea what marriage was really like." After returning to Manhattan, Chesser said, "Johnny Bench is a great athlete, a mediocre everything else, and a true tragedy as a person."

Biggio was epically bad in those two games.
