Not all that thrilled about Addison. Sounds like a 3rd rd type flyer on a midget wr.

Seems a bit silly to keep adding premium capital to the offense while fielding a bottom feeder defense. If we were going to add pieces to the offense why not address the root of the problem (IOL)

I can't speak about Addison himself as a player.

I will say that I didn't see WR as a need. The biggest needs all had very good players available at our pick Needs at C G QB CB etc.

So Picking Addison makes me wonder wtf they are thinking.

I would hazard a guess that they really wanted to trade out of that spot to add picks but nobody wanted to give up enough to make it happen. so they picked the highest rated remaining player on their board.

Comps to Percy Harvin would excite me. Comps to Troy Williamson make me want to puke.

I sincerely hope they got a gem with this guy. but I still think they should have been more proactive addressing some more immediate needs.

I think he's very different than Willianson. Troy was a sprinter with no receiving instincts and glass hands. Addison is medium speed, but a great route runner with good adjustment ability, who is apparently prone to the occasional drop. He'll at least be a solid receiver.

I love this review on NFL.com

Analysis: Addison was too strong a value for the Vikings to pass up. He would have been picked earlier if not for his slight build, average top-end speed for his size and occasional drops. Addison is such a tough player, though. He will be a great complement for Justin Jefferson working from the slot.

....

You mean you love that epitome of a cherry-picked review. Here are some others (all from the same article, which included the review above):.

I didn't cherry-pick anything numb-nuts. I loved the review and posted because I thought it was funny.

I'm not a fan of the pick for reasons other than what I think he will be as a receiver. I think Addison be a good slot receiver, maybe even a #2.

Yeah right, why you're just Mr. Hilarious today [&o]

And stop your BS that it's not about him as a receiver, as you posted "I just have my doubts when I see, undersized, underfast, prone to drops, coming off injury."

Mr Hilarious? I wanted Mr Belligerent-ass, but it was already taken.

What a shame. Hey, at least you were able to use dick-face in the other thread.

Not surprised you'd lash out, what with facts whacking you in the face left and right on several threads.

joejitsu -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 3:35:30 PM)

I was kind of upset that we picked a slot receiver when everyone paying attention knows that we have been weak at iol,dl, and cb for a few years. Those positions were available in spades at 23. But, we chased the shiny penny. I think JAdd will be good, but we needed to get stronger at so many different spots.

Maybe they didn't think Osborn could cut it as a #2. Or they thought a WR is needed to make the offense go. Or they are concerned about what JJ will command in his next contract. Or some combo.

Nobody else wanted Porter or the two QBs in the first round. I was hoping for CB.

I don’t understand why Porter is still on the board. I watch a lot of Penn St. football and he struck me as a big, aggressive cb who is really good in run support. Maybe a little grabby, but that can be coached out of him. Just what I thought Flores was looking for in a corner.

It's being reported that both the Saints and KC called about trading with the Vikings. Their offers weren't good enough for the Vikings to give up Addison.

Arlowe84 -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 3:48:56 PM)

I'm mixed on the Addison pick.

Look I think he's a heck of a football player. Smooth and a natural catching the football.
He actually reminds me a lot of Jefferson. He profiles similar to Isaac Bruce, more quick than fast, not gonna blow DBs away, but savy
He reminds me a lot of Jefferson, so we'll have two WRs I think very similar in what they do.
I think Harvin was more a RB in a WR body.
Anybody can bust, but probably a pretty safe pick with All Pro ceiling

My issue, like many, is how in hell are they actually going to stop people?
I like Flores, but you got to have the players, and I don't see a lot of good players on this D.

Once Christian Gonzalez was gone (New England jumped all over that pick), I was fine with trading back and trying to get some more draft picks, since we have no 2nd rounder.
The only guys I really wanted at that point was Nolan Smith. How scary is Philly looking? My god that defense is insane.

My favorite two picks of the first round were Darnell Wright (Bears) and Emmanuel Forbes (Washington).

The Eagles also scored big time on both picks.

Forbes was the worst pick of the 1st round IMO.
A toothpick CB show can't tackle. Good luck with that.
INTs in college but some gaping holes as well.

New England couldn't believe their eyes when Christian Gonzalez was still there.

marty -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 4:16:01 PM)

I am guessing that Addison/3rd CB, is better than the Vikes getting a CB there, combined with a 3rd round WR.

They tried to trade down. They probably don't have the ammo to move up, so the next pick is in the 3rd round, likely a CB ?

I actually think WR is thin. They think they can get cb, edge, qbotf, etc. at slightly less value but Addison had too much value.

Most likely each offered a single 3rd.

Bill Jandro -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 4:28:35 PM)

The rationale they used as to why they picked a wr was how much confidence they have in Flores that he doesn't need any defensive players.

Flores was unavailable to comment due to him being needed somewhere to part a sea.

I think that's what he means. And yes, supposedly WR-CB > CB-WR in this draft. God I hate agreeing with both of you, even just in principal [:)] but I think they will go CB in the third so it's germane to the conversation.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 5:18:22 PM)

Get this guy in the 2nd round:

In a draft that feels light on high-end talent, Hockenson is an ascending talent with a chance to become one of the best all-around tight ends in the game. He should continue to fill out his athletic frame, but he's already a sound in-line blocker with the toughness to sustain and finish. His above-average athleticism and separation burst will help him win against linebackers while his body control and hands give him an advantage over safeties. Hockenson has standout talent and fits any scheme, but he could be coveted early by teams looking to delve more heavily in 12-personnel (two TE packages).

I’m glad that Levis got picked early tonight. He’ll be a good pro. But how are we going to improve our iol and dl? Schmitz and Avila ate there for the picking!!! Make it happen.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 6:55:29 PM)

If we packaged ALL of the remaining picks, we would move from 87 to 69 based on https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp?RequestTeam=min.

There is a low probability players could be involved. No idea whether Kwesi would trade future picks, or if he would find a taker.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 7:00:46 PM)

LMAO, I can imagine some drunk Vikings fan onsite yelling "Trade up... give 'em... anything!"

Det and GB with TEs. I'm good with Hock, but he will be a bit pricy soon.

DavidAOlson -> RE: 2023 NFL Draft (4/28/2023 7:11:01 PM)

Detroit's draft is so weird. RB reeeeach, LB reeeeach, TE reeeeach, and a S steal.

I was with three other guys watching the draft last night. We all agreed that the worst four picks of the opening round were the Packers, Vikings, Lions (first pick) and Falcons. What in the world were any of those teams thinking on those picks?

When the Vikings draft a USC player and Brad doesn't like it, that tells me all I need to know.

Pukers got one of the best players in the Draft in Van Ness.

I slept on it and in the fresh light of morning, I'm still underwhelmed with this pick. With all of the glaring needs the Vikings have, they opted to draft their #3 WR. I'm sure some will proclaim him as the #2, but I'm skeptical that he will come in and leapfrog over KJ. I know that there is some sentiment that the receiver pool drops off drastically after Addison, but I would have been fine with not drafting a receiver at all this year.

The kid's interview did nothing to make me feel any better about it. He came off as a smug arrogant dick, who immediately started talking about getting paid.

Corner was a glaring need and Joey Porter Jr slid right into our laps. Big,fast, physical modern corner.

There were both DT and edge rushers who could have provided immediate help.

QBOF is another glaring need as we are probably heading into our final year of Cousins. Levis and Hooker were there. In fact they could have traded back and gotten one of them.

The good news is that some slid through to the second round. Hopefully KAM can find a way into the second and get one.

Often Divas are the best WRs.

Wow, I'm surprised they don't test for it at the combine.

I think they do. I'm almost certain they do.

[&:]

Probably do. Just hasn't leaked yet.

I think TJSweens has a defensible position, no WR in the draft, if you're happy with Reagor as WR3. And pretty much any WR later in the draft will only be WR5 competition, based on the impression that the position really thins out fast this year.

I'm slightly more confident with the CB roster, with Murphy/Evans/Booth. But it completely depends on whether Booth can rehab into a less injury prone body, and I have no way to judge right now. But at least later in this draft you can get solid CB3/CB4 prospects. Supposedly a very, very deep year at CB.

No clue at LB, and I have no idea what else Flores wants on defense.

And for what draft sims can tell me, I also saw a lot of Center prospects, many big enough to play guard. Seemed like a deep position group in the sims, and so I wouldn't be surprised to see them pick up a decent C/G prospect. And the draft sims left me with boatloads of RB prospects in the later rounds; so if they trade Cook, they should be able to get a decent RB3 prospect.

They do test for it at the combine. It's called interviews and personality evaluations.
