PAY-DAY: #Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson is now the highest-paid tight end in the NFL, signing a four-year $68.5 million contract extension with $42.5 million guaranteed. #SKOL

Wow. I didn’t think he’d get that much money from us. And JJ is expected to set the market with his upcoming deal.

All that is nothing.

JJ is going to bust through $30 million a year as if it is rice paper.

And just wait until Darrisaw is up. He's already drawn praise as the second best LT in the league.

Untold tens of millions in dead cap.

The D needs an talent boost.

How people (not you) are having a come to Jesus moment regarding the pending UFA Cousins is beyond comprehension.

Been saying this for a year... IF WE CHOOSE TO DO ALL THE ABOVE, WE WILL HAVE TO START A QB ON A ROOKIE DEAL.

It might work. It might not work. But if it works... The payoff could be a Super Bowl. If it doesn't work... Who cares? One-and-done in the playoffs? I'm over it.

Who are we going to draft that is going to come in and set the NFL on fire his rookie year? We won't get a shot at Caleb. So who is it?

Cousins hasn't set the world on fire so why is that a requirement?

Pretty darn good. OK I'll settle for who we can draft that can come in and be pretty darn good his rookie year?

And this is exactly why we should have traded Cousins and found a journeyman for this year. We are headed for 8-9 or 9-8 with Cousins. That list above is ridiculous. The only QB's I can remember teams tanking for were Luck and Lawrence. What teams mostly do is tank for a high draft pick so they can figure out who they want to take at QB. Vikings try and draft QB's in the 3-5 rounds which just doesn't work. This will be a wasted season and instead of drafting the second or third best QB next year we will get the fourth or fifth best QB. They better get lucky.

I don't see this as a wasted season at all. We are going to win the division and advance in the playoffs. The only way this will be a wasted season is if you consider 31 teams every year to have wasted seasons.

To me Hock is good but not great. Good doesn’t reset the market.

As for negotiation skills…they were rumoured to be “far apart” …settling on a mark setting contract isn’t exactly winning.

Agreed, don't need some Harvard MBA to stay " how about we make you the highest paid TE in the history of Football? "

Apparently (according to nflnetwork), the deal is pretty close to what the Vikings offered Hock before training camp. Hock and his agent must of hemmed and hawed before caving and signing off on the deal (totally my interpretation).

Its neither here nor there at this point. I like him as a player ... not a true field stretcher as a TE ... doesn't have the assassin mentality of the top 2-3 TEs ... just really solid in all areas, so much better than what we've had in a long time.

Not all but most contracts paid to entrenched starters that are top 10 at their position are inflated ... pretty sure the language of the contract is even more inflated than the numbers to make the agent look good.

Very good analysis. I was wrong with my initial reaction to the deal. I'm still not thrilled because signing Hock means we can't sign somebody else that may have made a bigger difference.

It was Princeton, a bachelor's in economics. And the negotiation included avocado toast fused with locally sourced soybean sprouts washed down with kale-inspired coco water.

Plus a master's from Stanford. Pretty good one-two punch.

Ah, so that's where the recipe came from. Seemed like a disconnect but now it fits..

But I don't see how those or any number of degrees matter WRT analysis of football players.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/1/2023 3:53:15 PM)

Highlighted on his resume under transferable skills.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/1/2023 3:54:26 PM)

His weaknesses are that he “works too hard “.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/1/2023 4:12:23 PM)

Likability: walks the walk with unique sockless flair for semi-highwater resurgence.

Leadership: seeks absolute consensus before big decisions.

Experience: as a commodities trader worked big sugar deal for Pepsi, proud sponsor of the NFL.

Dealing with pressure: when 'on the clock', ably works the phones to trade down with division rivals.

Results oriented: "Lewis Cine is improving on special teams."

Communication: "Kirk goes zero dark Lebron mode in the offseason."

In the Hockenson deal we added about 5Million to our under the cap. We need to use it or lose it. Will we put that Money into JJ's deal or will we use it to sign a free agent or afford to add a player in trade.

we are presently about $10.5mm under the cap, and that's assuming the quessenberry deal is league minimum....

No, cap can be applied to next year's cap. Why waste it on scraps.

Kurt B -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/2/2023 10:32:52 AM)

Kinda digging our cast of playmaker’s if Addison is as he appears (Micro sized sample size)
Fine with Hockenson contract as opposed to waiting on Irv Smith to turn into a player in which he didn’t.
Need someone pop at RB/ home run type threat in Chandler would be outstanding.
Hoping Brian Flores is a one and done. If he takes us deep in the playoffs you know he’s gone to another HC position.
Would suck, but that’s the reality of the league…
Schedule kinda sucks for us, but it is what it is…..
Go Vikes

I believe you are correct about us bringing in Risner after Tampa game.

I only fool with NFLShop.com, though they are in bed with fanatiks (or however you spell it), so perhaps, you can get the same stuff on their site. The Vikings team store is also good, but you can't get customs there.

Nike may be a good spot as well, since it's their apparel, but idk their stock.

I think if the Vikings were going to make a trade, signing, or claim before the first game they'd have done it by now. We might be looking at the opening day roster right now.

if we pick up a free agent after the first game of the season, like risner, we don't have to guarantee his salary - some think that we might sign someone during the 2nd week....
