The problem with looking deeper is that it's all on the surface with the Twins. Cheap owners, running a cheap organization always looking for cheap options.

The wondrous off-season continues. Ehire Adrianza has been added to the organization in a quality control position.

We are in the same boat as last year....need a couple of pieces. We are actually behind last year were we ended up with a broken starter and reliever from Seattle in a trade that brought enough cash to sign Santana and a backup OF.

twinsfan -> RE: Twins off-season (1/8/2025 9:27:09 AM)

They are really scaling back the Twins Caravan events. Not too many years ago they had 6 or 7 different legs and would go all the way to Crookston, Minot, Bismarck, etc. This year they aren't even going to Duluth. WTF.

Leg 1 features Austin Martin, Zebby Matthews, Justin Morneau, Cory Provus and T.C. Bear, and will visit Rochester, Minn., La Crosse, Wis., Welch and St. Cloud, Minn., and Fargo, N.D.

On Leg 2, going to Willmar, Minn., Sioux Falls, S.D., and Owatonna and Mankato, Minn., the attendees will be Brooks Lee, Louie Varland, Kris Atteberry and Glen Perkins, with T.C. Bear at select stops.

twinsfan -> RE: Twins off-season (1/8/2025 10:09:29 AM)

As a MyTwins Member, you have the first opportunity to purchase a ticket to a once in a lifetime autograph session with five National Baseball Hall of Fame players:

• Bert Blyleven
• Rod Carew
• Joe Mauer
• Paul Molitor
• Tony Oliva

This exclusive autograph session takes place at Target Field on Saturday, January 25th beginning at 1:15 p.m. and includes:
• One autograph per Hall of Famer
• MLB autograph authentication

A limited number of tickets are available for this opportunity, and all proceeds benefit the Minnesota Twins Community Fund. Secure your spot before they sell out!

-------------------------------------

Out of curiosity I checked the ticket price. $381.50. And that's for only one ticket. Not to mention the attendee needs to provide the items to be autographed (official MLB baseball is probably the best way to go, and I think those are pushing $20 each now). Is this really going to sell out???

twinsfan -> RE: Twins off-season (1/8/2025 10:12:15 AM)

RIP Brian Matusz. That's crazy. Wonder what happened.

We need more than a couple of pieces.

Yep but I was talking about a big RH bat and pitcher last year....this year no idea but mostly don't care to even think about it as I know they won't do anything. All it would take is one trade or FA signing to at least care.

twinsfan -> RE: Twins off-season (1/9/2025 11:33:31 AM)

The Twins have acquired catcher Diego Cartaya in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodges for RHP Jose Vazquez. Looks like a great deal for the Twins.

twinsfan -> RE: Twins off-season (1/9/2025 11:37:35 AM)

Cartaya is a Top 20 prospect in all of MLB. Heist. Huge!!

Today the #MNTwins acquired C Diego Cartaya ($2.6M surplus trade value) from the #Dodgers in exchange for RHP Jose Vasquez (not yet in system).

The deal is tentatively accepted by our model, pending Vasquez's addition.

He's gonna be a stud. Played in the Futures game 2 years ago. He's a big catcher, in the model of Joe Mauer.

The way I see is the 3 pieces the Twins are missing:
An infield
An outfield
A pitching staff

When is the last time the Twins made a deal that you didn't think was great for the Twins? Prospect ratings aside, the conventional wisdom is that if Friedman is willing to trade a high rated prospect, the kid is probably grossly overrated.

TBH they do have a good roster....1 SP, 1 RP, one big RH bat last year.....this year who cares (Twins won't be in the Hot Stove except minor moves).

$6.4 million for Willi Castro feels like a big overpay.

I didn't like the Spencer Steer for Tyler Mahle trade.

Meh.

Cartaya, a two-time consensus top-100 prospect in baseball, was designated for assignment on Friday to make 40-man-roster room for newly-signed infielder Hyeseong Kim.

The Dodgers were carrying four catchers on the roster, including Cartaya, who used option years in each of 2023 and 2024. He was the low-man on the depth chart with Will Smith and Austin Barnes in the majors and Hunter Feduccia at the ready in Triple-A should a backup-catching need arise. Factor in the rise of Dalton Rushing, who could hit his way to the majors this season, and Cartaya’s chances of playing time in Los Angeles were highly unlikely.

Given that Cartaya will be out of options after 2025 and with a limited path to the majors this year, him getting cut could have been foreseen. Now, he’ll have a chance to turn things around after struggling to hit in the upper levels of the minor leagues the last two seasons.

Cartaya, signed out of Venezuela for $2.5 million in July 2018, was the Dodgers’ top prospect prior to the 2022 and 2023 seasons, was ranked among the top 55 prospects in baseball by each of Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, ESPN, FanGraphs, MLB Pipeline, and The Athletic in 2022. The next year, those six outlets all had Cartaya among the top 28 prospects in the sport, with Keith Law at The Athletic rating him No. 6 overall.

It just didn’t work out.

Cartaya hit .189/.278/.379 with a 71 wRC+ and 19 home runs in 93 games in Double-A in 2023, then hit .221/.323/.363 with a 85 wRC+ and 11 home runs in 95 games between Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2024, including just .208/.293/.350 with a 60 wRC+ in Triple-A.

He turned 23 in December.

David Levine -> RE: Twins off-season (1/9/2025 12:43:54 PM)

Jarrett Seidler at Baseball Prospectus wrote about the declining performance of Cartaya over the years, and how he and many others missed when ranking him so high on prospect lists.

quote:

Ironically, the missing piece on Cartaya might have been eye scouting all along. He was physically mature at a young age. His swing is pretty as right-handed swings go, but his bat path is kind of grooved. Low-A pitching got a whole lot worse coming out of the pandemic because of the minor-league contraction, and Cartaya destroyed it. Once the pitching got better, his quality of contact and contact ability both imploded.

Probably not even an average salary now....I thought some said they were afraid he was going to get 8.

Median salary in 2024 was 4.98 million....
