I wouldn't be surprised if Spielman drafted more players in the 7th round than any other team during his tenure. How many of those did he hit on?

I would be. And he got cheap depth from those picks. He seemed to use 7th round picks to avoid competition for in-demand UDFAs.

I felt like Spielman's best values came after he filled the essential needs, but before he was picking UDFAs in the 7th. Like, interesting players in rounds 4-6, sometimes even round 3. But that's just a gut feeling.

My theory of Spielman was that he had players graded into tiers, and he was willing to trade down as long as he was almost certain he could get any player in that tier. That'd be fine, except once other teams have declared a preference, you have the additional information (duh) that other teams preferred the other players and chose not to trade down. So you wind up with one of the weakest players in the cluster. Even if you have no preference, you shouldn't wait for the guy nobody else wants.

In other words Spielman didn't identify his guys and go get them. He was content to take whatever fell to him. The multitude of late picks always came at the expense of earlier picks when better talent was on the board. Spielman executed a strategy of sustained mediocrity to perfection.

2024 NFL draft: Best rookie team fits, perfect landing spots

J.J. McCarthy, QB, Minnesota Vikings
Drafted: Round 1, No. 10

Why he fits: In Kevin O'Connell's system, McCarthy will be set up to throw with consistent rhythm on defined concepts, especially to the middle of the field. He completed 75.3% of his passes on throws inside the numbers last season at Michigan, including 15 touchdowns and three interceptions. McCarthy can heat up his pass velocity to drive the ball, attacking tight windows off layered reads -- especially with play-action elements rolled in. No NFL team used play-action more than the Vikings in 2023 (30.6% of dropbacks).

As a passer, McCarthy can target all three levels of the field -- short, medium and deep -- and he can create outside of structure when necessary. But it's the core passing/play-action concepts in O'Connell's offense that really make this fit work. And if McCarthy wins the No. 1 job over Sam Darnold in camp, he will be throwing the ball to a talented group of pass-catchers, led by top-tier wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

I asked this on the Timberwolves thread, anyone know if there has ever been an NBA playoff series (7 game), where the visiting team won every game?

Not one that went seven games.

With this format 7 games is the only way it could happen .... right?

I wasn't questioning you, just thought maybe it happened with a different format. I just googled (for marty ;) and the previous format was 2-3-2. So for it to happen it would have to be the visiting team winning and it would have to be in 7. But Im a little worried about senility myself ...

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 6:38:57 AM)

Adam Schefter
@AdamSchefter
Another done deal in Detroit: Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN.

Goff now goes from former No. 1 overall pick to highest-paid Lion in franchise history.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 8:11:55 AM)

So the T-Wolves can make history by being the first team to ever win a series with all road wins - if they're not shellshocked.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 8:42:34 AM)

Take it to the Timberwolves thread.

Remember when people were apoplectic over Cousins signing for $28 M per year?

Take it to the Timberwolves thread.

I did, and got no response. I posted it here, and got some good response and discussion. Thank you.

And now back to the Vikings 😀

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 4:10:49 PM)

Does it seem like the FO would like everyone to believe they wanted JJ and Turner all along? That it was the #1 plan? That they weren’t sniffing around for Maye @3?

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 4:12:27 PM)

Clearly we were JJ’s 1st choice. The question is - was he our 2nd or 3rd? Does it matter?

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 4:15:08 PM)

Doesnt matter

We don't need to know everything ... or at least there was a time when that was true

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2024 4:32:34 PM)

I don’t think it’ll matter for as to what we’ll see on the field. Or his and KOC’s relationship.

I think KOM did great. I simply don’t believe it was plan A. I can live with the white lies. I think we got the best guy for us even if it just happened that way.

No. I think it's pretty obvious to the world that they tried hard to get Maye. I don't expect them to talk about McCarthy in terms of being the guy they settled for.

I'm predicting that we got the better of the two QBs Maye/McCarthy. We weren't very serious about trading up for Maye by offering 11-23 and next years first because the reports say we were requiring this years and next years 3rd round picks from NE in the deal.

Richardson was actually the 1st choice if you look at the picks involved.
