Rocco Baldelli is taking over as hitting coach. Two for the price of one.

I certainly hope not.

He needs to concentrate on managing the team. Let the hitting coach coach hitting.

Putting too much on his plate just means paying one less guy. It's totally be another cheap ass owner move.

Well, Twins Hitting coach Popkins isn't coming back....

Good

This team didn't understand situational hitting at all. and they all fell off a cliff in Aug/Sep.

FIRED!

Well, in a sense yes. but his contract was expiring and they informed him they wouldn't be renewing it. Assistant hitting coach goin bye bye too.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Twins 2024 Season and Game Day Thread (10/2/2024 9:15:09 AM)

And when is Tommy Watkins going to be moved off of 3B coach? He was terrible over there.

Anthony Crupi
@crupicrupicrupi

Diamond Sports counsel tells the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas that it plans to drop nearly all of its remaining MLB contracts, with a plan to retain only the Atlanta Braves.

Another sign that the cheap ass owners wont spend money on this team.

Until they prove me otherwise...

He can't manage the team well enough, why not make him the hitting coach too?

This is IMHO really stupid and really cheap.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Twins 2024 Season and Game Day Thread (10/2/2024 12:59:42 PM)

In addition to Popkins, the Twins announced that assistant hitting coaches Rudy Hernandez and Derek Shoman will not return to the staff next season. Infield coach/assistant bench coach Tony Diaz also will not return to next year’s staff. The rest of the group is expected to return.

Please tell me you are not leaving Tommy Watkins coaching 3B.

Please tell me you've reassigned him go get me a burrito coach...

He was positively awful when it came to judgement of when a guy should go or not.

I remember somehow the wage our pitching coach received (Johnson) from a college to be their HC was at least double....

Odds are these guys are taking better paying jobs........
The Hitting coaches did a very good job I believe with what they were given....

Phil Riewer -> RE: Twins 2024 Season and Game Day Thread (10/3/2024 6:13:58 AM)

Gleeman was on KFAN. From 2006-2009 the Twins spent 23% below league average payroll. In 2024 they were 24% below league average payroll.

So they are now spending less than the last 4 years of the Metrodome.

New or not, it still is a far better facility than the Metrodump ever was.

And in the end the reason people aren't coming now isn't because of the stadium. It's got more to do with an ownership that isn't committed to winning. That's the point. This ownership gets cheap. Doesn't try to compete.

There's plenty of blame to go around but not doing more to improve your team last offseason because of bullshit about needing to cut payroll because of a TV Contract issue....and then doing nothing at the trade deadline because you can't add to payroll at all?

The Ownership is cheap. I lay most of the blame on them.

But that being said...the players we had were poor at situational hitting, base-running and defense was abysmal. That's on coaching.

If you look into how much Royce, Correa, and Buck missed....it isn't that proposterous. Jeffers, Miranda, Santana, Castro, and Larnach carried us at different stages but the next level of money went to Vasquez and Farmer.

I don't see a LAD, Yankees, or Astros lineup when all are healthy.

What if you look at the 2023 Payroll? Like Gleeman mentioned the average payroll is 170 million.....140-155 should have been the sweet spot.

I don't see a LAD, Yankees, or Astros lineup when all are healthy.

During the epic collapse The entire lineup was batting under .200. They couldn't score runs. ALL Season, for years actually, this team has been terrible when runners are in scoring position. Load the bases less than two outs, almost guaranteed NOT to score a run...why? Because of trying to just get a doink, Trying to just gap a fastball. or get a seeing eye single...They are all trying to "be the hero" and drive the ball out of the park.

How many more runs could we have scored. How many more games could we have run as a result if we were just successful 1/4 of the time more often?

That's on the hitting coaches.

Tom Kelly wanted guys that could hit the ball the other way. He never had a problem with turning on an inside pitch like Gardy did, but if these guys had Kelly we would have scored a lot more.

The other staff here that needs to go is the Training staff. to have so many of your top stars on the shelf for so long? Something isn't right there.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Twins 2024 Season and Game Day Thread (10/3/2024 10:54:32 AM)

The reason we did well in 2023 was our pitching......the reason we collapsed in 2024 was our pitching....nothing to do with the hitting.

We knew going into 2023 we had a very good pitching staff and going into 2024 we knew it wasn't as good.....it ended up worse than average in 2024.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Twins 2024 Season and Game Day Thread (10/3/2024 11:01:52 AM)

Going into 2025 they have to hope Paddock and Ryan can stay healthy and Festa, Mathews, Varland, and SWR progress and find a couple BP arms (Topa and Stewart health would help).

Hitting they are going to lose Santana, Kepler, Margot, Farmer....odds are they have to figure out what to do with Kirilloff and Julien. Gleeman said we have to replace 7 hitters....not sure who the other 3 are beside the 4 obvious ones.
