TJSweens -> Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/2/2025 9:52:38 AM)

Looks like one of the first things will be to sign Danila Yurov to his entry level contract. His KHL team released him now that he refused to sign an extension with them. The KHL has goofy politics. If a player is on the last year of a deal, he gets playing time cut drastically untill he signs an extension. Refuse to sign, they get released.

This should help the Wild. Yurov is, hands down, their top forward prospect and a center to boot. He is supposed to possess Kaprizov level talent only bigger and faster.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/5/2025 10:50:20 AM)

Rossi is gone this summer. According to multiple league sources, the Wild offered Rossi a five-year, $25 million contract earlier this winter that was not accepted. That pissed off Guerin and sealed Rossi's fate with the Wild in my opinion. We are in dire need of good centers and giving up on Rossi could very well come back to bite us.
It is going to be a very interesting summer.

This makes a lot of sense and I hadn't heard it. I was scratching my head why a 60 point C was on the 4th line. If true, it was dumb as hell but would give an explanation.

If you watch his highlights he's got incredible shot accuracy.

That reminds me of something that has always bugged me - why are there SO MANY shots that go wide or over the top of the net? These guys take shots at that net 100 times in every practice, and have been playing for years. When they wind up to shoot - how can so many go wide?

I'm not talking about the ones that get tipped or blocked, of course. But geez. Kind of like Shaq who couldn't hit a free throw to save his life. How is it possible that a pro basketball player could miss so many free throws?

Yeap. A huge pet peeve of mine too.

Seems petty to me (by Guerin) but apparently Rossi thinks that contract isn't enough.....if you can't get equal value in a trade do a 1 or 2 year contract....

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/8/2025 8:21:29 AM)

It's pretty clear that Guerin and Hines don't value Rossi. Kicking him to the 4th line, so Freddy could center the second line was criminally stupid. Getting pissy because Rossi turned down a below market value contract is further evidence of Guerin's poor temperment for the job. Obviously Rossi knows what a 23 year old center with his production is worth even if Billy doesn't.

Lynn G. -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/8/2025 9:22:13 AM)

Do we actually know what Guerin's reaction to Rossi turning down the contract was? It sounds like people are just assuming that was his reaction, but the reality is that negotiations over contracts happen ALL THE TIME. Guerin knows that. Until I hear it from him, I'm going to assume it's a non-issue and has nothing to do with how the coaches use Rossi on the ice.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/8/2025 11:15:05 AM)

According to Russo, Guerin was not happy about it and Russo doesn't know if that offer is on the table anymore. I think Rossi's use in the playoffs conclusively shows how little the powers that be value him. He was relegated to the 4th line and the third fewest minutes among forwards, while Gaudreau and Nyquist played terrible hockey above him. Nyquist with one screw up, cost them a 3rd win series lead and possibly the series. Meanwhile their second best center and 3rd best offensive player got put between a couple of journeyman grinders and still scored a couple of goals.

Russo puts the odds of a trade at 75 to 80%. That apparently would suit Rossi just fine.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/8/2025 12:32:38 PM)

I like Gaudreau more than a lot of people but his use during the playoffs was insane. Same with ZB. Can't wait to watch that dude for a full year NEXT year. He had no business stepping straight outta college and QB'ing the #1 PP unit. Don't get me wrong. He absolutely should have gotten minutes. Just not there.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/8/2025 12:56:05 PM)

Agreed. My issues with Freddy have more to do with how he is used than with the player he is. Gaudreau is a savvy veteran role player who is well suited to a bottom 6 checking role. As I said earlier, using Freddy as a second line center in the playoffs was criminally stupid.

That defines all of our forwards but the first line of Boldy-Ek-Kirill. Until Guerin acquires some more top line talent we can't be considerer playoff contenders. I can see it now, our big free agent signing will be a 33 yr old Brock Nelson looking for his last big contract. I like Nelson, but if that is all Guerin does we are spinning our wheels. We need a major upgrade of talent in forward group.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/9/2025 9:46:47 AM)

What kills me is the way we seem to go about it. Our philosophy, if you will. BG seems to take that approach of "we can't score goals so lets focus on getting young, stud defensemen". Lets try a different approach like getting young, stud forwards [:-]

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/9/2025 4:40:00 PM)

One name I'm not interested in is Brock Nelson. No more big money, no move clause contracts to players in their mid 30's whose best years are behind them.

Todd M -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/14/2025 4:54:35 AM)

Hockey.

What if Toews is reasonable priced? 1-2 year contract at $3million? Apparently it took him a while to recover from long COVID but that sniper would be nice to have even if he will be 37.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/14/2025 3:06:42 PM)

I would pass on any geezer at this point. We aren't a Nelson/Towes away from winning the cup. Spend the money on young guys to build around.

Yessir Jesser. Those are my feelings exactly. No more mid 30's Guerin guys.

So we are all in agreement on that. Now how do we make Guerin do it?[&:]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/14/2025 8:59:39 PM)

The worst 'rumor' I heard (and it was just stupid speculation) was they give Tulip a front office role and he talks his bestie to come over for 2 years for 1 last run (Crosby)

Phil Riewer -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/16/2025 11:06:26 AM)

Good start to the offseason:

https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-wild-nhl-sign-danila-yurov-russia-first-round-metallurg-magnitogorsk/601355289

Part from Russo:
The 2022 first-round pick will earn $950,000 per season ($855,000 in salary plus a $95,000 annual signing bonus) when he’s in the NHL and has a chance to earn max “A” bonuses for a forward.

He can earn $250,000 for each bonus up to a maximum of $1 million if he achieves four of the following each season: 20 goals, 35 assists, 60 points, top six in total or average ice time among Wild forwards (minimum 42 games), top three in plus-minus among Wild forwards (minimum 42 games), 0.73 points per game (minimum 42 games), making the all-rookie team, being an All-Star selection or being the All-Star Game MVP.

He also can earn up to $1 million if he achieves one of any “B” bonus thresholds, according to league sources. They are finishing in the top-10 in the NHL in goals, assists and points per game (minimum 42 games), if he is named a first- or second-team All-Star or win the Hart, Selke, Rocket Richard or Conn Smythe trophies. This was a compromise from both sides as 2022 draft picks have the ability to receive up to $2.5 million in “B” bonuses.

Yurov was drafted 24th overall in 2022. The total value of his contract is the fifth-highest among 2022 draft picks currently signed.

Yurov, 21, who won a KHL championship in 2024, has 41 goals and 88 points in 209 career KHL games, including a team-leading 21 goals and 49 points in 62 games in 2023-24. That broke the KHL’s all-time under-21 scoring record, previously held by Vladimir Tarasenko.

Coming off shoulder surgery after that season and then suffering a late-season ankle surgery, Yurov’s production slipped this past season, with 13 goals and 25 points in 46 games.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/17/2025 10:49:51 AM)

That was the easy part though. I want to see what BG does with the real problems.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2025 post mortem, off-season and draft (5/17/2025 2:16:27 PM)

It's a good ztart. Yurov is everything the Wild arent...Young, big and fast.

The good thing about his contract is Guerin can't stash him in Iowa to earn is dues. He either plays with the Wild in the NHL or they have to loan him back to the KHL.....nobody wants to play in the shit show that is Iowa.

All I know is that if they send him back to the KHL because Billy loaded up on more 35 year old grinders, I'm going to be pissed.
