45. Minnesota Timberwolves: Rocco Zikarsky, C, Australia
The Minnesota Timberwolves are selecting big man Rocco Zikarsky out of Australia. He is a massive big man who won't turn 19 until a few weeks after the draft, Zikarsky is a hard-nosed Australian center who plays a bit of a throwback game. He stays near the rim to serve as a last line of defense and he is a strong finisher near the rim who hasn't shown a lot of versatility to this point.

You never know, 'til you know. But this kinda seems like an underwhelming return for pick #31 to me. If I'm following everything correctly, the Wolves traded #31 for #36 and "2 future second round picks," with no further info on those second rounders.

Then they trade #36 for #45 and cash. Then they take Rocco at #45.

I'm not really a fan of Thiero, but I sense that most people would rather have Fleming than Rocco, a bit of cash, and two second picks.

So, twin tower 18-year-olds. Interesting. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it answers no questions for next season. The real intrigue starts now, with free agency and trades. Naz, NAW, Randle? Others? Who stays, who goes?

It looks like Naz is going to opt out. That doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t return. But he’ll test the market and if the wolves want to keep him, it will likely cost them a lot.

This draft was for the future, no doubt. FWIW, which is almost nothing, I've read that Rocco was considered a first round pick at one point. Apparently injury contributed to a disappointing year and knocked his value down. He will be on a two way deal and playing in Australia next year. Beringer will hopefully be a rotational piece by the end of the year.

Naz could be a difficult resign if he opts out. Detroit will probably try to sign him. From what I have read, Naz wants to be a starter. I also read a rumor that Atlanta would like to add NAW through a sign and trade. The Dejounte Murray trade left them with a $25.3 million trade exception.

Its fine.

Its an avoiding the 2nd apron move. If they were going to add another player in the draft it was going to have to be a guy who would accept a 2-way contract. And Rocco is expected to sign a 2 year, 2-way (like Clark did).

He's a fun prospect that the Wolves worked out extensively in Minnesota. Has a chance to actually be a player.

- Joan runs in transition, eurosteps the first defender, decelerates and balances on one leg and finishes through contact.
- Gets the ball, blows by his man with a quick first step, uses a low gather to slip past the help defender, and again finishes through contact.

Naz certainly has serious offensive chops and continuity is important.

But he needs serious defensive improvement. But a stretch 3 has value.

I’m neutral on Naz coming back…with that deal. I’d have been fine either way with him coming back or walking. He certainly has value, but he has flaws that can be exposed too.

He’s a good piece to have, no doubt, but a lot depends on what else is done around him.

I don't know where this Naz Reid is a terrible defender narrative comes from. Stat Muse consistently has him as above league average defensively. He is a versatile defender too as he defends everyone from SGA to Joker. Good shot blocker, good footwork and good on switches. His 4th quarter defensive field goal % topped the NBA in the playoffs this year. Naz won't make anyone forget McDaniels defensively, but he is by no means a liability on the defensive end. The issue with Naz centers more on consistency. There are nights where he just can't seem to find the rhythm of the game.

I'm damn happy the Wolves will be retaining Naz Reid long term. I expect he will be in our starting lineup when Julius eventually moves on this year or next.

Reading a bit more about the circumstances surrounding the Wolves and the #31 pick, I didn't realize that the expectations for most players drafted #31-#40 (or around that area) include a spot on the 15-man roster. Guys like Fleming were insisting on a roster spot rather than being agreeable to a 2-way deal. So essentially, the Wolves traded back until they found a guy with upside willing to accept a 2-way deal. And the Wolves picked up some cash and a couple future second round picks in the process.

Maybe it was an unreasonable hope they could turn #31 into a future first. If they couldn't do that, the above seems like a reasonable path.

Defensive stats are specious at best. He's a bad defender.

Defensively he really lacks awareness. He gets caught out of position frequently and tends to reach and grab from a flat-footed base. He will pull off some very impressive weakside blocks, but he's not a rim protector at all.

He's stuck between positions. He's physically more of a wing than a big, but he's not good defending on the perimeter and he's not really big enough to defend the interior.

The one positive is that Gobert hides a ton of his flaws - they've developed very good synergy. So as long as he plays mostly with Rudy its not as damning.
