Oh, its just March 15. Almost feels like the end of summer, our roster prospects already set in stone.

Man we are hunkered down TIGHT!

A super reflexive knee tap kick to the bad signings last year? Simple economics? A laser focus on draft prospects? 'Singing Fingers' Brzez whizzing through calculations for reduction/streamlining, not addition?

Maybe we'll focus on the draft, then use the ol' Barrel of Monkeys approach during final cutdowns.

Pierre was our juiciest signing (let's face it, Murray was a marriage of convenience, with loaded shotguns at both heads - both would have looked like idiots for not making it happen).

As for as Pierre - a part time player / non-starter should never have their PFF or any statline compared to someone out there playing every down. Seems like a very savvy signing but our secondary is still sucking wind.

OL, DL, Secondary. Top four draft picks + plus some veteran fillers released after the draft and cutdowns ...

Wish we had a couple of nickels to rub together to find one or two solid veteran signings beforehand, to get the benefit of a full training camp.

We simply don't have much cap especially since we have to set aside roundabout $10 million. Most other teams have more cap, some a lot more, some a ton more. Agents and teams are waiting it out but we appear to be out of that race. We could backload but Brzez might be the lone voice saying they already kicked $39 million dollars worth of cans into 2027 and beyond to add to what was already there.

Guess we'll wait it out and sign some low-tier players, maybe after the draft and towards the end of the offseason as you say. Thought we'd sign 4-5 more FAs, maybe that should be 2-4. Or 0.

Yep, Pierre highest snap count in a season is low, just like Rodgers was.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (3/15/2026 6:37:50 PM)

My initial reaction to signing Murray was very negative, a QB that is too short, who can't run like he used to, that hasn't completed a whole lot of deep passes. Looking at his pro highlights, it looked like he benefitted from some great catches from WRs, or the current stud TE.

But Murray is better than Wentz , and McCarthy will be a year more experienced, so the QB situation is better than it was going into last year.

And last year the Vikings won 8 games, which is probably the floor as long as Flores is still around. This season should be a fun season of 10+ wins.

Yes it is! Nevermind the peacefulness is a forced product of Credit Card Kwesi throwing $300+ million in the air just last year in new contracts. It's kind of nice being in a Matrix-like simulation of a regular team... keep your long snapper, sign a couple of FAs, cut up the credit cards, wait, and go into the draft with 4 of the first 97 picks.

Caleb Banks (Florida): A 6-6, 327 lb prospect with elite size and 40-time speed (5.04) for a NT, projected as a top pick.

Read about him a while back. Very light on his feet as well. Seems like a great fit to play inside and pop out to DE when Flores gets on a roll with his mad scheming.

Only knock on Banks is he may have a chronic foot problem.

Here's another write up on Banks. I like the title "game wrecker".

"Banks’ foot injury, which he suffered last season, could push him down the board, which would benefit the Vikings. The defensive tackle is a game wrecker in the trenches that Minnesota needs after whiffing on free agent signings last year."

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (3/16/2026 1:59:27 PM)

"And while Murray still has to win the job from McCarthy, what O’Connell said to Murray did stick with him—that he was the one guy on the market that they could see as a potential longer-range answer, rather than a one-year Band-Aid. The idea of growing with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Christian Darrisaw and O’Connell and his staff was already wildly attractive to begin with. The chance to, perhaps, put down roots only made it more so."

Kyler Murray said he’s kept in touch with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell on a yearly basis since the NFL Scouting Combine in 2019.

It certainly appears O’Connell covets Murray’s skillset and there won’t really be much of a competition with JJ McCarthy.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (3/16/2026 3:35:40 PM)

Minnesota Vikings salary cap update after first wave of free agency
Right now, the Vikings don’t have a ton of salary cap space at their disposal. Per Over The Cap, the Vikings have $5.9 million in cap space. That will grow to approximately $9.4 million once Aaron Jones’ pay cut is reflected.

That isn’t exactly a lot to work with for the Vikings. It’s also important to note two things when talking about the current cap space: it doesn’t include the savings from both defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and safety Harrison Smith. Both players were deemed to be post-June 1st cuts, meaning their savings totaling $12.5 million won’t hit the salary cap until after that date.

It’s an important factor here, as the Vikings need to set aside around $17 million with the salary cap. That money will account for multiple things:

The final two roster spots, as only the top 51 are accounted for until final cuts
Signing the draft picks
Practice squad
In-season signings
The majority of that is going to come from the two post-June 1st cuts. The rest can come from a couple of other roster moves they could end up making: trading edge rusher Jonathan Greenard ($12.25 million in savings) and extending right tackle Brian O’Neill (upward of $18 million in savings).

We’ve been waiting for what seems like two weeks for a resolution on Greenard. There have been numerous rumors about a potential trade, but it hasn’t happened yet. On the other hand, there has been no discussion about an O’Neill extension.

State of 2027 Vikings’ salary cap is healthy
Looking ahead to the 2027 salary cap is important to the discussion. Right now, the Vikings have 33 players under contract with salary cap liabilities of $259.5 million. It gives them salary cap space of approximately $67.5 million. Effective cap space before the draft class is added in will be around $18 million less, giving them around $49 million to spend in free agency next year.

One added element for the Vikings is the impending salary cap credits they will likely receive from both the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers signing defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, respectively. Allen ($8 million) and Hargrave ($4 million) had significant guarantees remaining, and their cash paid in 2026 will give the Vikings up to a $12 million salary cap credit. That’s a big deal for the Vikings to get that money back, and important to understand that it’s not coming until the 2027 season.

Overall, the salary cap is still relatively healthy for the Vikings overall, but it’s not going to result in any more significant moves going forward.

Seriously?

Cousins?

Good how?

Fn rich disappointment of never achieving anything, should just retire..

Who would give him money ?

I hope the Raiders “snatch him up”, quickly.

Is there a new HOF category for biggest theft of money?

Is he even a competent backup, which he will never accept?

Sad story, but his dad was a 10th round pick that played for the Vikings for 2 seasons (started 2 games) and had 19 tackles for us.

Kyler Murray said he’s kept in touch with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell on a yearly basis since the NFL Scouting Combine in 2019.

Anybody else finding this a bit strange that O'Connell seems to keep in touch with every QB in the league?

He must have a rolladex where he calls a different QB every night to tell them how great they are.

Hugging opposing QB's when they meet on the field after the game.

I especially like the one where he is hugging and telling Anthony Richardson how he is going to be a great QB for a very long time. Maybe O'Connell was referring to the CFL.

Thats right. What people dont understand is, ‘quarterback whisperer’ has nothing to do with recognizing / developing talent, he literally whispers at any qb in his general area.

I’m sure he hugged Kwesi after the 2022 draft and whispered, ‘you are going to be a great gm’ also so its not just qbs.

Coach Whisperer.

Confirmed: The #Vikings are set to be completely off the hook for Jonathan Allen’s $8M guarantee in 2026

With the #Bengals giving Allen more than $8M cash, the full offset kicks in. Minnesota avoids the $8M cash payout and banks an $8M cap credit for 2027

Big accounting win for Brzezinski and the #Vikings 🥂

Not only is the Allen offset confirmed, but the #Vikings are also fully cleared on Javon Hargrave’s $4M guarantee now that he’s getting $13M in 2026 cash from Green Bay

That’s $12M total in future cap credits banked between the two of them #BrzezinskiSZN

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (3/17/2026 10:49:49 AM)

It's important to look at how the cap status is relative to the league. For example we could have $100 million in cap room but if the rest of the league has $200 million in surplus then our status is not 'healthy'.

Current 2027 cap status from OverTheCap:

At $67 million, Minnesota is 21st in cap space. Add in $12 million in offsets from Allen and Hargrave and Minnesota moves to 18th depending whether or not the three teams above them also have offsets.

- 20 teams have more than $70 million in cap space
- 10 teams have more than $100 million in cap space
- 5 teams have more than $125 million in cap space
- 2 teams have more than $150 million in cap space
- 1 team has more than $175 million in cap space

A quick look at the top dozen or so teams suggests the average number of players under contract is around 30. Notables: the Rams have 40 players under contract with $108 million in cap space. Eagles with 42 players and $83 million.

Coincidentially, Vikings, Packers, and Bears are listed in order with $61-67 million and 32-33 players under contract. Lions are at $100 million but with only 24 players.

The only QB under contract in Minnesota for 2027 is JJM.
