Toby Stumbo -> General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 1:12:06 PM)

The other thread seemed buggy and slow so let's start a new one for the first game of the season.

GO VIKES!!!

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 10:38:11 PM)

Great win all things considered!

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 10:44:08 PM)

Double-digit 4th quarter comeback with 3 TDs in his first NFL game.

Special.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 10:46:08 PM)

JJ in the 4th.

6/8 passing.
101 Total yards.
3 Total TDs.

Steve Lentz -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 10:47:05 PM)

Big road win!!!!!

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 10:49:33 PM)

JJ the second ever QB making their debut to lead a comeback win in the 4th quarter.

The first guy? - Steve Young

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 10:53:10 PM)

Apparently also the First Vikings QB since Fran to throw multiple TDs in their debut too.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2025 11:01:11 PM)

Per Scott Van Pelt on ESPN SportsCenter just a bit ago, McCarthy is the first quarterback ever. . .ever. . .to account for three fourth-quarter touchdowns in his NFL debut.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 12:32:41 AM)

JJ has the potential to really be something special.

I have a feeling he is going to prove Brad wrong. Just because JJ didn't have the chance to do a bunch of 2 minute drives for Michigan, doesn't mean he isn't good at them.

JT2 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 12:32:41 AM)

Wow, people hating on McCarthy because he wasn't perfect in his first NFL game. Comparing him to Ponder?
We handcuffed him in the preseason, and in the first half tonight. Certainly he made some mistakes, but he won this game, and he's going to be our starting QB for a long time. I'm with that.

One game in Marty. Big key is the other big additions and then Addison back week 4.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 12:34:43 AM)

And in 2 weeks he'll get back the WR with which he was developing chemistry: Addison.

Hopefully they get Darrisaw back soon

Bigger keys. Big performances by Mason, oline, rookie 5th round rookie DT, Hargrove/Allen, PR Price, and Eric Wilson.

Darrisaw will be back in a game or two as Chicago’s field/turf sucks. Very good reason not to let him play.

Got the win while missing some pieces.

I think it’s going to be like this more often than not at least this season for him. He’s not going to be a fantasy football stud every week. That will make some fans whine. The game might be ugly for long stretches now and then. But he’s tough and he’s a competitor and he’ll make plays that are necessary to come out with a win.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 6:47:26 AM)

It remains to be seen how quickly and how far JJM develops.

It was the Bears being the Bears after all, with no secondary and some horrible calls go against them.

Even so, the gumption … the mental response … after throwing a pick six with the game slipping away, with some bad drops by wrs …

this dude has a chance!

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 7:12:34 AM)

Loved what I saw in the 4th quarter. Favorite part of the post-game interview....no thanking of God for making it all possible. Thanked his teammates. That was a breath of fresh and reasonable air.

If he keeps that up, he has a chance at gaining my respect.

Bingo! Also can we try the stuff that worked a little earlier next week? The run run pass punt conservative offense was legendarily terrible. Once the training wheels had to come off he was a whole different qb.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 7:47:35 AM)

Glad I didn't pack it in after the shitshow for the first 3 qtrs.

Not sure it was completely on JJM or O'Connell play calling to conservatively. 4th qtr was amazing.

That bootleg for a TD by JJM was a great call.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 7:50:37 AM)

My .02

The defense balled all night long. Williams was elusive or we would have sacked him about 9 times.

Williams is not mentally strong once we got into his head in the second half he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

JJM looked like a guy playing his first game in the NFL right up until he threw the pick 6. After that, he transformed into a stud. Wasn't a tidy clean game. Jury is still out as this was just one game, but if we have a guy that has no give up, still leading, still fighting after the first half...we may have something special. If Cousins had had a first half like that, we likely would have had no hope of coming back.

Miles Pryce is going to break one at some point this year. Great all game long.

I loved the master strategy of KOC. When Chandler caught the kickoff and looked to the sideline to see what to do and KOC had him run it out....It's a little thing that in the end made it impossible for the Bears to orchestrate a last minute tying FG drive. Little things like that are important in moments like that.

I hope Darrisaw is back soon, because Skule spent most of the night being Schooled

I was getting pretty upset because they weren't containing Williams in the pocket. Beat a guy like that by making him stay put.

But later in the game he kept getting knocked over by his own guys. That's a testament to the interior pressure provided.

Our new guys contributed pretty well last night. Theilen with the 2 pt conversion. Hargrave 2 sacks. Allen plenty of pressure. Wilson taking over when Cashman went down. Kelly Fries and Jackson on the interior oLine,

Pairing a HC, who has spent three years winning one close game after another with a QB with a never say die attitude....Great things could be a coming.

I am trying to temper my enthusiasm because for more than half that game I was thinking it might be a long season...But then that fourth quarter happened.

Bring on the Dirty Birds. JJ can beat his second draft-mate (Penix) in two weeks!

SKOL!!!!!

Absolutely the best playcall of the night.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 8:07:38 AM)

The first three quarters was tough to watch. I kept thinking, it's time to take off the wrapper and let it fly. It seemed like we had about five plays in the playbook. The play-calling was miserable.

Second thought.....the offensive line looks a lot better than a year ago.

Another thought.....Ben Johnson went from having the best offensive line in football to arguably the worst. That team is going to struggle.

Richard Neussendorfer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 8:13:50 AM)

Can the NFL start taking field conditions seriously? There was zero excuse for that garbage last night. Always seems to be a Soldier Field thing too.

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 8:13:58 AM)

My $0.02:

Not much that hasn't been said by others.

The 59 yd FG - wow!

The KR and PR game was very solid! Coverage teams need a bit of work.

Mason was a stud. Kept moving the pile and wore the CHI defense down.

Wilson coming in for Cashman was amazing. He made a number of great plays.

Jackson was not great back there at safety.

Jetta running a 3.5 yard route on 3rd and 4 - twice - early on had me pissed.

Two of those TD were on 3rd down - clutch!

Was shocked when CHI didn't just kick the last KO out of bounds. 35 or 40 - who cares? Idiot. Smug MFer.

Skule was pretty poor for the first part of that game.

McCarthy is a leader and a winner. You saw his best traits on display last night.

The bootleg/keeper was a great call. JJM has some wheels and is tough.

The touch on the pass to Jones was great - especially after the brain fart on the pick 6.

Great to get a road win and in the division - both are never easy.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/9/2025 8:39:35 AM)

Looked like they got the play clock squared away later in the game. There is absolutely no excuse for a pre-snap three ring circus.

With his pass catching ability, looks like Jones is the change of pace guy. He was overused last year and it is showing. Mason is already an important piece of the offense, hope he can pass protect.

Way too many wide open looks for Chicago, not a new thing with this defense.

Nice to see WE made a long FG and THEY missed one (well, a 50 yarder).
