I think the answer lies in using the criminal justice system to deal first with the addiction, then with punishment at increasing intervals. Addicts need consequences to recover, and for some, the criminal justice system is the only consequence to get their attention. It may be more expensive in some ways in the short run, and addicts and their families will try to game the system as part of the disease, but jailing addicts is also futile if there's limits to the real, effective help available. No easy answers, obviously, and I would make weed an exception even though it's hardly benign.

I agree with RBI's underlying premise, but I would keep all effective weapons available to fight the beast, because addiction is a motherfucker that will take fire from every angle and still win in many (most?) cases.

I think in a controlled system, rather than criminal system, it should become evident to family and friends that a loved one is slipping into addiction. They'll have to be upfront about getting it and that makes it more visible. The option to intervene without destroying your entire family economically is greatly increased.

I believe in individual freedom. If you want to throw your life away, that's your choice to make. You've made no choice if it was made for you. If you think legalization would turn us all into addicts, you're simply wrong. The vast majority would still have no desire to do that sort of thing to themselves. What's more educating and protecting our children from drugs would be far simpler if we weren't being hypocrites about all of it.

Are you recovering Ralph?

RBIrving -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 8:42:01 AM)

Yes and no, I'm an Al-Anon member, I'm recovering from the affects of an alcoholic wife and doing quite well at it. My marriage didn't survive her alcoholism but I did.

Todd M -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 8:58:38 AM)

I like your twist on it Ralph.

AA with a higher power or cognitive behavioral therapy...whatever the method, I would imagine the success rate is determined by the true desire to change within the individual. I bet a lot of people get in the program b/c they should change based on their current situation but aren't ready.

RBIrving -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 9:03:11 AM)

It works for me and that's what's important.

Bingo.

They know they need to change and they want someone/something to do it for them. When they're ready to be that change it gets so much easier.

RBIrving -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 9:04:58 AM)

another double post

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 9:57:22 AM)

Happy birthday to Toby, alias Tony, Stumbo!

Celebrate your little heart out, and then use the weekend to recover.

I remember being in treatment at an open meeting being put on by an outside group that really had an impact on me. I agreed to treatment to get a charge dropped and i didnt actually have anything better going on at the time - no job, etc. So it wasnt like i was begging to clean up my act even though things were coming to a head. This guy is up there and he says only 15% of you will never drink again. My inner voice said right then that i would be one of 'em. That and my girlfriend's friend giving me 3 months made it much easier for me.

There can be a lot of stuff that goes into being ready. As silly as it may sound i was obviously ready to get clean but being challenged was a big part of what put me over the top.

Ricky J -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 10:50:53 AM)

ps - it s not easy to post messages on a smart ph riding in a car ... on my way up too MN for a Harkin reunion (with the same girlfriend, wife Donna).

Happy birthday Tony. Great testimony Ricky. God bless on your continued sobriety.

Hear hear.

But, he said, he ended up in treatment that was too God-focused . "Don't tell me I have a disease and then tell me the solution is to pray," he told Hartman. "There's a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment that's a little dangerous and a little sad."

Good for him!

Good stuff all of you
I wrote an email to Dubay and he wrote right back to me with more good thoughts
I have been a part of hundreds of young peoples lives thru coaching
I try to get every bit of knowledge I can in order to help those who stumble along the way
I'm glad he touched on not relying on religion. he admitted he knows those that have, and as he says ... "whatever works"
He's confident, and open, and I hope he can get back to where he wants to be.
That was a huge fall from grace. He was in a profession/environment that isn't very forgiving normally.

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/13/2012 2:32:26 PM)

I loved that he gave out his e-mail address at the end and encouraged people to e-mail him because, as he said, he wants to extend a helping hand to anyone who asks. I don't know much about what he was like before he went through all of this, but it sure appears that he came out the other side a better man. Good story.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/21/2012 1:16:04 PM)

Only thread working for me ...

I was kinda down about the Vikings  ....

But if there's ONE guy I'll believe, it's THIS guy .......
LOVE his enthusiasm and honesty. One of the best acquisitions by the Vikings ... in my long lifetime.
You cannot doubt his intentions, his drive, his desire to be the best on the best team.
We need more of him, not less.

Todd M -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/21/2012 3:02:13 PM)

That was great.

It we be so great to watch him hold up the trophy. Unless we redo his contract the window sure is small with him/us though.

Ricky J -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/27/2012 6:18:59 PM)

We re taking the Lightrail to the game. Spending some money in Minneapolis. Can I buy some lottery tickets yet to help pay for the new stadium

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (7/27/2012 8:06:51 PM)

I don't think the Viking scratch games are up and running yet, but I may have just missed it.

Aren't there 3 years left on his contract?

I can't believe people spend 4,5,6 hours on the site with nothing to say.
