I wanted a gold star. I don't think this qualifies.

Hemoglobin A1C/Total Hemoglobin 5.9

Screening and Diagnosis:
<5.5 % Normal
5.5% - 5.9 % At risk
6.0% - 6.4 % Prediabetes
>OR= 6.5 % Diabetes Mellitus

I wanted under 5.5

I do not know my exact number from where I started but if I had to guess I believe it was between 7.5 and 8.

I have little doubt you will reach your goals Todd. What you have done to date shows your determination. Props to you and keep fighting.

Well done Todd! Can you see the finish line?

No. But maybe I shouldn't.

I can reset my goals and give it my all going forward. See what #'s I get in 3-6 months.

I was able to turn most of my cholesterol #'s around.

quote:

Your Total Cholesterol of 90 is DESIRABLE
Your LDL of 120 is NEAR OPTIMAL
Your HDL of 29 is HIGH RISK

RATIOS:

Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 3.10 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) IDEAL
Your HDL/LDL ratio is: 0.242 - (preferably over 0.3, ideally over 0.4) AT RISK

Except HDL - the good cholesterol.

Again, not knowing my initial numbers beyond "sky high".

So, while truthfully I'm a little disappointed I accept where things are. I wanted to knock it out of the park but probably more accurately hit a stand up double.

bohumm -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/2/2016 8:49:48 PM)

Todd, this is a case where the gold star is within reach, and the silver star you earned is remarkable, but the real haul is the participation trophy that you toiled for and the progress you've made. You got off the fukkin' couch and took action; ask any doctor and they'll tell you how rare that is today.

Good work.

I'd give you a gold star. Recognition, initiative and discipline.... A+.

Lots of good advice and support in here, that's pretty neat.

Only thing I would add......make sure you are building something that is sustainable. A "diet" is so often temporary. Don't get too caught up in the numbers. Lifestyle change doesn't happen overnight. It's a process that takes a life time.

Keep doing what you are doing. I'm happy to hear you are doing well.

Todd M -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/3/2016 8:24:27 AM)

Thanks for the well wishes, Pete.

There is also a long-term glucose test called a hemoglobin A1c. This test gives your average reading over the last 3 months. A1c is expressed as a percentage. Normal for a person without diabetes is below 5.7%. Targets for a person with diabetes recommended by the ADA are 7.0% or lower if you want tight control.

5.9 wasn't something for me to be disappointed with in the least.

As my wife reminded me as well, this is an avg that includes some of the beginning times when I was scoring fairly high. I see 5's all the time when testing now...only makes sense that if I keep this up then the next test will reflect that better.

Thank you ALL for your support.

Here's is my water cooler announcement: My son and his wife just had their second baby girl! So now Molly at age 3 1/2 is a big sister to a one day old sweetheart named Violet.

(What's up with all of the old-school names coming back in vogue?)

I'll be hitting the road for St. Louis on Monday to see the new addition to our family. [sm=dothewave.gif]

It could have been Agnes.

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/7/2016 9:54:39 PM)

I know. Or Beulah.

The name Violet has definitely grown on me, and enough people have told me they love it that I'm convinced I'm the oddball.

Don't go there. [:D]

That's a big deal!

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/8/2016 10:24:43 AM)

Thanks for all of the kind words about my exciting news. I'll be seeing her tomorrow! It's an 8 hour drive so I borrowed an audio book from the library which should pretty much take me the entire way. And then I have a second one for the return trip three days later.

Still hoping that someday they move back home!

Congat's Lynn. Drive safe

Todd M -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/9/2016 11:55:39 AM)

Ok guys...gonna do a 3 month check up with you. From here...I probably won't have much to update over the next while...

You can come see an even closer to the new and improved version of me when I hit Minnesota in Oct for the Houston game.

quote:

(A1c 5.9)I wanted under 5.5

I do not know my exact number from where I started but if I had to guess I believe it was between 7.5 and 8.

Way off. My initial A1c was 9.4.

Fasting blood glucose - starting number: 10.7 last test: 5.8

Cholesterol:

Triglycerides - starting number - 6.93 last test 0.92
Cholesterol - 5.0 now 2.32
HDL (the good one) unchanged .77 - .75. Kinda bugs me...I thought this # would be the # that really reflected my diet change. How much fish does a man have to eat! Hopefully lots cause I love it.
Cholesterol/HDL ratio 6.5 now 3.1
LDL cholesterol was "calculation is invalid at triglycerides @ > 4.52" now 1.15
Non HDL cholesterol was 4.23 now 1.57

I don't know if you can relate to the numbers or not...seeing as they're all Canadian. I've converted them before...if one desired they could do so...I'm going to leave them as they are as it is easy to see the incredible improvement...even in a foreign language.

Everything cholesterol is shiny IMO. Except the one most in my control without medicine assistance. There is no pill to increase HDL. As it is I am on a rather low dose of statin medication to lower cholesterol so I'm going to chalk that up to diet. Shame the diet didn't increase my HDL though...no clue how to raise it...I eat like a champ. Maybe quitting smoking and exercising more regularly will do the trick.

Starting weight 310 - now 240.

Heck of a 3 months, eh?

David F. -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/9/2016 12:31:36 PM)

I ran Todd's numbers through Google translator converting Canadian to English... but it just added more Canadian.

Triglycerides - starting number - 6.93 last test 0.92 He's giv'n'r!
Cholesterol - 5.0 now 2.32 Jesus Murphy!
HDL (the good one) unchanged .77 - .75. Kinda bugs me...I thought this # would be the # that really reflected my diet change. How much fish does a man have to eat! Hopefully lots cause I love it. Hey HDL number - take off you hoser!
Cholesterol/HDL ratio 6.5 now 3.1 Eh?
LDL cholesterol was "calculation is invalid at triglycerides @ > 4.52" now 1.15 That calculation had the biscuit eh?
Non HDL cholesterol was 4.23 now 1.57 No Molson muscle for this guy!

Yeah, I don't know why this ratio is expressed that way.

All I know is I referenced it and it came back: Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 3.10 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) IDEAL

...and I was like - good enough!

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes water cooler thread (5/18/2016 1:45:26 PM)

I won't be a pest - I'll just mention this here once - but if anyone has some spare change and is looking for a good cause, please consider helping out Books on Wings.

Minnesota Monthly magazine is issuing it's first annual Give Twin Cities supplement in which they highlight 16 non-profits, and we were honored to be chosen as one of those. They wanted a mix of some older-established non-profits as well as some newer ones that they deemed to have a good mission and solid footing, and at only three years old we are definitely one of the youngsters.

In addition to the print material they started a competition for fundraising through Crowdrise and the top three fundraisers get to split some big money that they have set aside for that purpose. We don't expect to compete with those big-name charities, but we're taking advantage of the campaign they set up to put out our own tentacles, looking for donations.

Several people from this board have already donated and I am truly grateful for that. If anyone else is looking to support a charitable organization that is on a mission to close the achievement gap - give us a look. $10 will buy two books, and for two children those may be the only books they own.

Thanks!
