Holy crap, the Sharks are one loss away from choking AGAIN this season.
Knew that was a bad match-up for them.
But a 1 has to beat an 8.
Lets strike while they are pissed off, as soon as they are eliminated, offer to take McLellan off their hands.
Should have been here being the heir-apparent anyway.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/24/2009 8:42:30 PM)

You called it Lynn ...  Good to see the club taking action .... my man Voros gets the nod!

WASHINGTON -- The NHL did not suspended Sean Avery, but his own team benched him Friday night.

The controversial New York Rangers winger, who picked up six minor penalties and a 10-minute misconduct over Games 3 and 4 of the first-round series against the Washington Capitals, was not in pregame warm-up at the Verizon Center on Friday evening.When asked by ESPN.com if Avery was out of the lineup, Rangers GM Glen Sather said, "That's right."
Sather also confirmed that the NHL did not suspend Avery, who dealt Capitals defenseman Milan Jurcina a shot to the face Wednesday night in Game 4 in the first of his two third-period penalties. He was also called for high-sticking Brian Pothier with 3:06 remaining in the game.
Rangers coach John Tortorella refused to answer questions about Avery's status for the game after the team's pregame skate on Friday.
"You guys, because of what Sean did the other night, want to make it about Sean Avery thing," Tortorella said. "I coach the New York Rangers. I think team concept is the most important thing. That's the way I'm trying to approach this thing.
"I'll give you this: When Sean and I met for the first time when I came here, we both talked that we were going to handle it like men, go through the process, and I'm not going to talk to you guys about Sean Avery or anything else."
Left winger Aaron Voros will replace Avery in the lineup. The Rangers lead the best-of-seven series 3-1.

Caps are not going down easy ... the NHL NEEDS Ovechkin in the next rd. Nice 4-0 win tonight.
Back to MSG for game 6.

Lynn G. -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/24/2009 10:31:17 PM)

Good for the Rangers coach for benching Avery. Has he already set a record for being the most frequently benched/suspended/released prematurely player in the league?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/24/2009 10:36:22 PM)

Pretty much. And its most frustrating, because when he plays and behaves himself, his teams have a better chance of winning.
You could say he turned the Rangers season around, down the stretch.
But then the "jackass bug" bites him. Every sports got 'em .... T.O., Milton Bradley, Rasheed, and hockeys got Avery.

I need him in the next round....[;)]

Sid the Kid takes over and single-handedly buries Philly today.
He just refused to lose.
If anyone ever wants to see how a fight can make a difference in a game, a series, a season, watch that game today. Down 3-0, Pittsburgh starts a scrap and it was all Pitt from then on. Huge momentum changer.

Tim Cady -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/25/2009 9:27:00 PM)

[&:]Love the Melrose call on the highlights regarding the guy losing the fight helped the team the most and how Sydney and number 7 are 400 hitters putting the puck in out of the air....

Tim Cady -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/25/2009 9:28:44 PM)

Rangers coach John Tortorella suspended 1 game for meltdown in the last game, he went after a fan for squirting him.

I hope  the Capitals come back, I want more Ovetch

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/26/2009 12:52:31 PM)

Sharks going down fighting anyway.
That next game should be a war.
Man, this first rd is dragging.
All these teams waiting for their opponents will have a big advantage.
Getting healthy while the others beat each other up.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/26/2009 3:08:09 PM)

Huge statement by the Caps today.
Bets player in the world takes over there too.
Ovie is WILLING them to the next rd.
Told ya MSG is no home-ice advantage.
The Avery issue has messed them up.
Glad to see Voros still pissin off opponents. Good kid.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/28/2009 10:01:06 AM)

I was disappointed in the Flames last night.  They didn't even put up a fight in their own rink. [:o]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/28/2009 4:48:24 PM)

Agreed Jeff.
I was shocked to hear that was something like Calgarys 3rd straight 1st-rd exit? Ouch.
And the Sharks are a mess, a huge mess.
Will be very interesting to see what they do ...
Blow it up? Trade the big boys? Ride it out?
You just cannot continue to be unbeatable all year, then wilt in crunch time, and they have made a habit of that.
Too good of a team to go down that easy. Have to be very fragile emotionally. You have to change the locker room if that is the case.
We'll take Thornton [:D]

2 huge Game 7s tonight.
I think both home teams win, not a big stretch.
Brodeur and Ovechkin dominate both games.
Rd 2 should be AWESOME.
Preview tomorrow.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/29/2009 10:10:13 AM)

Couple awesome Game 7s. Did not disappoint.
Both losers went out fighting.
This could be a fantastic second round, some intriguing match-ups.

Bruins vs Canes
Only rust can slow down the Bruins, they manhandled the East teams all year, this will be no different. If it takes Boston more than 5 or 6 games, I'll be surprised. The easiest series to call, imo. Canes are very Wild-like to me, solid but not dangerous enough to win a series like this. They'll fight hard but will go down in 5 or 6.

Pens vs Caps
Oh my, this could be a fun one. The worlds two best players, two exciting teams, two young improving tenders, two hungry franchises. I think the Caps have more of everything. Better offense overall, better defense and depth, home-ice, adds up to a 7 game win for Washington imo. Pens one advantage is their top line, that shouldn't be enough to top the Caps.

Wings vs Ducks
Wow, just wow. This could be a classic. I really do not like either club. For completely different reasons. This will be a classic "talent vs grit" series. If the Ducks are allowed to get away with their usual crap, look out, this will go the distance. I see the Wings jumping on them early and often in Detroit and winning it in 6 or 7. But the Ducks are the ultimate sore-losers and will go down killing, not just fighting. Nasty, nasty franchise there, and it works for them.

Hawks vs Canuckleheads
Another barn-burner. Could easily go the distance. Chicagos speed and youth vs Vancouvers size and nastiness and attitude. Really, really hard to go against any team with Luongo back-stopping it. hate to say it but I see Vancouver in 6 or 7. The game sin Chicago will be classics. Emotion and home-ice really take over now. And the young Hawks will be willed to a couple wins because of it. But it won't be enough.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/29/2009 10:45:01 AM)

Good previews my man.  I super excited for the Pens/Caps and Hawks/Nuckleheads.

Gotta love Melrose ...
Espn SC is running thru the NBA games, they announce the 6er forward will have to sit out with a "fractured sinus cavity"
They switch over to hockey, Kris McKendry asks Barry "would a fractired sinus cavity prevent an NHL player from playing?"
Barry doesn't skip a breath, says "our wives would play with a fractured sinus cavity"
[&:][&:][&:]
Dude kills me.
Thank God he flopped coaching (wimpy 'Ning couldn't handle him)
He's where he does the NHL the most good.
Guy has single-handedly kept the NHL almost-relevant the past 10 years.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/29/2009 11:47:40 AM)

I would love to see Panger get some air time too.  I love that guy and always have.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/29/2009 11:53:05 AM)

As usual, couldn't agree more.
Panger should be irritating and too wimpy and whiny, but he is fantastic.
I've learned a lot about hockey over the years from Pang.
He's fair and informative and a straight-shooter.
Pierre McGuire is close to him, but is too worried about controversy and outside crap.
Panger just tells it like it is and is another who really has done a good job of promoting the NHL.
I liked Brett Hull for his short stint, but some of the other former-players don't do much for me. (Milbury, Jones)
Was glad to see Schoenfield got to coach the Rangers in Torts absence the other night.
"Hey Koharski .... eat another doughnut" still kills me after all these years.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/29/2009 1:24:35 PM)

One of the best lines in hockey.  Maybe a distant second to "hey Bellows you f-ing p%%$@" [&:]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/1/2009 7:25:51 AM)

Awesome game in Vancouver last night.
Had a little of everything.
This young Chicago squad is a handful.
Down 3-0 in a hostile building, they were ALL over the Canucks in the third, tied it up before falling in the last minute.
They have some great young scrappy dudes who can play.
Have always enjoyed Quenvilles style of coaching, they get after you and aren't afraid to make mistakes.
A little light on the D end, but they will make this a series.
Excited about Ducks/Wings tonight.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/1/2009 7:28:40 AM)

Not sure how many saw it, but Dustin Byfuglien dribbling the puck in the air while being checked behind the net was amazing.
Controlled it in the air (ala Tiger Woods) for a good 5-10 seconds while being checked from behind. Very cool.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/2/2009 7:59:22 AM)

Super game in Detroit, just what was expected. Nasty and fast and thrilling.
Bruins are a juggernaut, just don't see anyone in the East slowing them down.
How the hell does Jussi Jokinen get acquired for nothing late in the year by the Canes while teams like the Wild watch?
Guy has been the Canes savior the past month or so.
The rested teams looked fresh last night, not rusty. We'll see how the next couple games settle things down.
The Wings always amaze me how they can adapt to whatever the hell kind of game the opponent wants to play.
They remind me of the 49ers dynasty teams in the NFL, who had a rep for great wide-open offense, meanwhile, their defense and toughness was the thing that was kicking your ass.
Detroit won't punch you in the mouth (unless they have to). And when they have to, look out.
Starts at the top there, their management is second to none. Built that team to win championships. Babcocks a helluva coach also.
We need to tap into their philosophies/talent pool.
