If Crosby wowed you don't miss Ovechkin.  He is 2x's the player IMO.  His game if freakish.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: All-Star Starters Announced (1/9/2009 10:25:22 AM)

Seconded.
He adds that dimension of totally-out-of-freaking-control.
He is scary at times.
No regard for life or limb (his or anyone else's)
I've been next to the glass, and you can actually see his sweat and spit flying all over the place.
He's like a heat-seeking missile when the mood moves him (which is most of the time)
Our own guy Burnsy has some of that too. Ugly, gangly, wild-eyed and talented.
But I agree with JJ, Ovechkins "the bomb" in the league right now.

djskillz -> RE: All-Star Starters Announced (1/9/2009 2:25:36 PM)

Hmm, interesting.

Ya, I haven't gotten to see him play yet.  But I'd love to.  One of these days.

I'm trying to make it to about 10 games or so this year if I can.  Gone to 3 so far.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: All-Star Starters Announced (1/9/2009 3:04:29 PM)

They are both great players but to reiterate SMF's post:

Ovi - heat seeking missile
Crosby - really sharp ninja style sword
Gaborik - sling shot where on end of the rubber band is always falling off

I really like these ideas on re-alignment.
The league isn't broke right now, but tweaking anything a little won't kill it.
Rivalries are the ticket in hockey. Bring 'em back. I wanna hate Chicago again like I used to. [&:] SECORD SUCKS!

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: All-Star Starters Announced (1/25/2009 9:31:43 PM)

Classic .... East beats West in the All-Star game 12-11.
Game ended by its best player, Ovechkin, in third rd of a shootout.
See what hockey would be like without physical play?

If you didn't see Ovechkin's latest "sick" goal, try to look it up.
Guy is the most incredibly imaginative player to play the game, maybe ever.
He has the "sickest" two goals I've ever seen. Last nights was #2.
Worth the price of a ticket, every night.
NHL needs to get off their ass and market this guy more.

NBC to air Stanley Cup finals games

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The first two games of the Stanley Cup finals this year will be on NBC, giving the league's broadcast partner a crack at weekend audiences.
Versus will show the next two before the final three, if necessary, will be on NBC.
For the past 10 years, either ESPN or Versus has shown the first two games of the best-of-seven series.

Tim ... you ever see an old special they aired years ago about the St Paul Saints?
Its a hoot, Sonmor was the coach, and it was a club filled with characters. If you youtube it, you can find lots of tiny clips about them.
One of the most "colorful" guys was "Shakey" Walton. Fan favorite. Million stories about him. I loved the WHA characters, because some could actually play and some couldn't. There was a widdddde range there, and Shakey could play. In one of the stories about him, he started a bench-clearer and was tossed, and was so upset, he headed directly out the Civic Center doors in full gear, got into a cab, and went to his favorite watering hole. I'd have given anything to be on a stool in there that night. Now that's old-time hockey.

Tim Cady -> RE: All-Star Starters Announced (3/7/2009 5:21:06 PM)

[&:] Great story.

I have only heard some of these stories from guys like you. Hockey entered my life in 1993. At age 30, trying to teach a 3 year old how to skate after my wife informed me that he wouldn't be playing basketball.[;)]

So.Mn.Fan -> Little trivia for you ... (3/8/2009 5:57:40 PM)

Pittsburgh's interim head coach Dan Bylsma improved his record to 8-1-1 since he took over.
This is the hottest start by a coach in club history thru 10 games, just edging out ..... who?

djskillz -> RE: Little trivia for you ... (3/12/2009 11:45:43 PM)

OK, had to check in here finally;

You guys would be proud.  I'm addicted to live hockey now!  I think I've been to about a dozen games this year with the Preds now (sorry guys), all with great seats, luckily.  Was at the Ovechkin game on Tuesday, row 3, center ice.  What a game, and a few AWESOME fights.

I still don't know the players/rules real well, but I'm getting there.  And man, I do love watching it live.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Little trivia for you ... (3/13/2009 9:30:55 AM)

Dustin once you've watched them live, it is easier to watch them on TV. For some reason seeing it live makes a person understand the game better then in other sports.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Little trivia for you ... (3/13/2009 3:36:56 PM)

Welcome, man.
Its about time.
[;)]
Greatest game in the world.

djskillz -> RE: Little trivia for you ... (3/14/2009 2:57:09 PM)

I can't go that far man, but I do really, really like it now.  Free top 5 row seats don't hurt.  [;)]

So.Mn.Fan -> 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/16/2009 12:21:12 AM)

1) (1) Boston vs. (8) Montreal: Who wins?

I've got Boston in 5 or less.
Bruins are rolling and have been rolling all year.
Kessel a better pro than I ever dreamed he'd be.
Chara is a beast.
Montreal reminds me of the Wild, too light in the breezers, and very fragile mentally.

2) (2) Washington vs. (7) New York Rangers: Who wins?

Still think the Caps will win this one.
It will take seven tho.
Hoping Ovie puts them on his back and shows the nation what he's all about.
Rangers are a good story, but they tend to fall down and take a long time to get back up
Caps weakness may be goaltending, they have to win shoot-out type games, the 6-5 or 7-6 variety, and they can.
Rangers are gritty enough tho, and an upset here won't surprise me.

3) (3) New Jersey vs. (6) Carolina: Who wins?

I have a rule of never betting against the Devils.
Sticking to it.
Solid franchise who expects to win every game and expects to compete for the Cup every season.
The Pats of the NHL.
Carolina has been red-hot, but that won't make up for lack of a lot of things.
NJ is deep and tough and has a great goaltender, not just a good one.
This one should be over in 5 or 6.

4) (4) Pittsburgh vs. (5) Philadelphia: Who wins?

I don't really see this being the big grudge match all the experts do.
Pens in 5 or 6.
Since the coaching change and the return of Gonchar, the Pens have been almost unbeatable.
Crosby and Malkin are poster-children in this league, you always have to remember that.
Every call will go their way, and they know how to capitalize on that advantage.
Flyers only hope is to steal one in Pittsburgh and pound, pound, pound them.
But these aren't the broad-street bullies, they lack enough guys to win that way, either.

5) (1) San Jose vs. (8) Anaheim: Who wins?

THIS is the one I think will be the war.
Sharks in 7 (I hope).
Bad, bad matchup for SJ.
The worst they could have gotten.
Ducks are just cocky and talented and conceited enough to think they will win it all, not just this series.
Series hinges on Thornton, its time for that great player to stand up and make a statement in the playoffs.
Can't wait to see this one play out.

6) (2) Detroit vs. (7) Columbus: Who wins?

Would love to see the jackets make this a series, but I'll be shocked if they do.
This has sweep written all over it.
I'll take Detroit in 5 or less.  (Boo)
Too deep, too talented, too much everything that counts.
Goaltending could cost Detroit, but they'll just simply give up less shots.
The best player in the league at several positions, it's almost unfair.
Great coaches, and great tradition. Don't like them at all.
But respect the hell out of them.

7) (3) Vancouver vs. (6) St. Louis: Who wins?

I simply cannot stand the Canucks.
I would give anything for the Blues to win this thing.
I think they have a chance, but my head says Vancouver in 6 or 7.
The Blues play everyone, and that will help if the series goes awhile.
They are not afraid and Murray will have them prepared.
The Blues need to get and stay physical from start to finish.
They will hate Vancouver by the time this one is over. (We all know why)

8) (4) Chicago vs. (5) Calgary: Who wins?

This will be a fun one.
Chicago may be young and dumb enough to win this thing.
I'm taking the Flames in 6 or 7 tho.
Just too much experience and star power to overcome.
Iginla doesn't wilt in April and May.
BlackHawks are a great story, it is awesome to have real hockey back in Chicago. (for them)

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/16/2009 10:26:01 AM)

Boston
Rags
Jersey
Pens
SJ
Det
SL [:-]
Cal

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/16/2009 8:10:10 PM)

Det is buzzsawing Columbus.  Poor Jacket fans.  It'll be a quick one I'm afraid.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/16/2009 11:39:56 PM)

I was actually pretty impressed with Columbus early, there were two bad breaks on the goals from the Detroit D.
Handled the atmosphere better than I thought they would.
But you are right, they are toast. They'll get a huge boost at home and will make it fun for a couple periods, but eventually focused talent kills you.
The BHawks/Flamers game was sweet.
Already intense action and its only the first game. Chicago did not back down. And CalGary was throwing the sink at them.
Bruins dominated Montreal, no surprise there. Kessel with two big goals.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/17/2009 12:39:26 AM)

And ... no surprise .... the Sharks dig a big hole already.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/17/2009 9:32:49 AM)

Yeah, my predictions are looking bad so far.

Good call on Columbus too.  They hung really tough until late in the 2nd.  Then they got bit by a couple of tough goals.  Their D needs to let Mason do his job.  It was a good sign that they scored immediatly after Detroit took the lead.   Good character on the that club.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/17/2009 9:33:51 AM)

One little bitch now. [:o]

Versus.......when you are showing the games back to back can you NOT SHOW THE SCORE/HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME THAT'S COMING UP AFTER????

Who is in charge there? [>:]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/18/2009 3:40:00 AM)

Another awesome night of puck
None of the games went the way I wanted them too, but it was great hockey.
IN-TENSE
Philly is really getting reamed in Pittsburgh, how many times will you see a 5-on-3 in OT? [:-]
The Canes took Jerseys best shot and still got the win. Nice goal from Paulie Martin, the old Gopher keeps rollin.
Good God, I hate the Canucks. THEE largest collection of irritating little bastards in history. (Maybe thats a little harsh)[&:]
Blues exhibiting great effort, just don't have the talent to beat them there. I think they'll make them sweat in St Louie tho.
Excited about Saturday night, the Sharks/Ducks series will be a WAR before it is over.
Like Melrose said the other day.... the Ducks ARE bullies, the Sharks just think they are, and they are not.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (4/18/2009 3:14:30 PM)

Looks like the Rangers are the surprise team of the playoffs.
They have that feel about them.
Lundqvist is finally playing up to snuff.
Their real test (oddly) comes when they go HOME to MSG.
