Something occurred to me that has probably long been obvious to the rest of you. The Stanley Cup has to be one of the most difficult championships to win. A long, long season, and then an endless line of best of 7 series ... it's a wonder any team survives that at all.

Similarly long seasons and playoffs for basketball and baseball.

I have always felt that the Superbowl was the biggest prize of them all (showing my bias because football is my favorite sport), but a team can win the Superbowl by winning a mere 12 games. That suddenly doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment at all.

Look at the NY Giants last year. With only a few games left in their season, it didn't look promising that they would even make the playoffs. On the other hand, you probably could say the same about the Kings. That old adage about peaking at the right time really has been applied.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (6/14/2012 9:28:35 PM)

While true Bruce, they needed to win, what 4 games for the ultimate prize?

That nets the Kings a series with the #2 seed, on the road, having to start all over. Then, the #3 seed...rinse/lather/repeat.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (6/16/2012 4:54:52 AM)

very cool

The L.A. Kings' first Stanley Cup in franchise history meant a lot to many long-suffering fans that feared they might never see the team raise the Cup before they die.
But there were some that weren't so lucky. Two in particular: Garnet "Ace" Bailey and Mark Lawrence Bavis, L.A. Kings scouts who were aboard United Flight 175, which crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Both men are commemorated at the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero. Their names are written at the South Pool, on Panel S-3. That's a photo of the spot above, with an L.A. Kings Stanley Cup champions hat resting between them.
Kings fan Dave Krasne, who lives in New York City, thought of the two scouts when the Kings won the Cup, and decided it wasn't right that they miss Thursday's Stanley Cup celebrations. He brought a hat to the memorial and laid it between them.
"May Mark Bavis and Ace Bailey finally RIP," he said in a tweet.

You have no idea how geeked I am about this.
I know already it'll never reach my expectations. [:D]
It combines two awesome things. Which is usually a recipe for disaster.
Love Rob. Didn't love the Flyers, but their place in history is definitely earned. Sweet that Clarke is on board ... that'll help.
Love him or hate him, Bobby is one of the most fascinating sports figures ever. Any other sport and he'd be a legend of massive proportion. One of a kind wild ass leader.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (6/21/2012 10:39:32 AM)

It'll be even better if Sheri Moon Zombie is in it like she is in most of his movies [8|]

Breaking news: Hearing Jordan Staal turned down 10-yr mega offer from PIT. Has indicated to PIT he doesn't plan on signing extension now.

-----
Probably doesn't want to spend 10 seasons in Pitt being a #3 (defensive) center and not getting PP time. Big boy. Would be great if Chuck and his old boss could work out a deal to send Staal here. Staal wasn't drafted #2 overall his draft year for nothing.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (6/21/2012 5:25:26 PM)

I'd take anything off Pitts roster, loaded ...... Wait .... Isn't dipstick Cooke still there?
Anyone but that pos.
Staals a horse, you are correct, Stacey.

This is about the player with the Kings that Dumba has "idolized": [:@]

TJSweens -> RE: General NHL (6/23/2012 9:48:54 AM)

Ah, I'm pretty sure that means he idolized him as a player. That doesn't mean we should look for young Matthew to be appearing in Ramsey county court in the near furture.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (6/26/2012 12:17:24 PM)

Oates gets the Caps job.
Good pick.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (6/28/2012 11:09:52 AM)

Crosby signs one of those stupid toomanyyears toomanydollars contracts.
I've loved sports all my life, and rarely want to know much about the economic side.
But these type of deals turn me away from caring about why .... Even more.
Just too damn complicated sometimes.
I used to spew about my dream ... To see pro sports leagues where everyone who makes a roster gets the same pay.
If you win more, you get more bonuses. Collectively. As teams.
I think you'd see a better product. More room for controversy or cheating perhaps, but I certainly think you'd see mor competitive teams and owners.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (6/28/2012 11:24:08 AM)

They must have factored in the uptick in price in feminine hygiene products over the course of the next 12/13 years.

Stacey King -> RE: General NHL (6/28/2012 11:25:22 AM)

they've got to clear up this bogus years on the end of these 12-13 yr contracts to keep the average annual salary cap hit down thingie in the new CBA

that was a mouthful.

and what these GMs and agents do is a mouthful that doesn't taste good.

loop-hole crap that goes against the spirit of the rules on contracts.

Headline from today's Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

Crosby, Penguins agree to 12-year, $104.4 million contract
Cap-friendly deal will help GM Ray Shero pursue free agents, re-sign his other stars when time comes

Jim Frenette -> RE: General NHL (11/8/2012 6:50:43 PM)

They've ended meetings for the night and have internal meetings and get together again tomorrow. I guess we should be happy that at least they are still talking

BomboStahoviac -> RE: General NHL (11/12/2012 8:10:20 PM)

I'm getting to the point of no return with the NHL. When baseball went on strike the last time I backed off for several years and became more of a hockey fan. It actually took me several years to get back into baseball when the strike ended. I may never go back to the NHL if this keeps up

Jim Frenette -> RE: General NHL (12/15/2012 9:19:02 AM)

The players are ready to decertify so they can file anti trust law suit. Most players unions do this as soon as they get locked out. Did players think this was a easy process and would be over quickly? They've wasted a lot of time

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (12/16/2012 10:11:09 AM)

Figures for a MN team. We finally sign real talent in FA and their contracts will be voided [&:]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (12/22/2012 9:29:52 AM)

97% vote of "yes" to disband the union. Getting even more interesting.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General NHL (12/23/2012 10:02:51 PM)

Aren't they disbanding so that they can go to the courts next? That sounds like something that will move as slow as molasses.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (12/24/2012 11:13:23 AM)

Yeap, if they disband they can sue the owners for breach of contract. The owners can then void any contract out there, thus creating a "free for all" system. It's what I joked about earlier. We finally make big moves in FA and those guys may be FA's again soon [&:][>:]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General NHL (12/24/2012 4:10:09 PM)

Lou Nanne was on the radio today saying that he's still optimistic, although he was saying that "I may be the only one". He thinks something will happen just before the "drop dead date". (Jan 5th or 6th)

In “Dropping the Gloves: Inside the Fiercely Combative World of Professional Hockey,” Barry Melrose discusses his brief return to coaching with the Lighting in 2008.

My new job with Tampa Bay lasted sixteen games. I was done just before Thanksgiving. I couldn’t get the team to play the way I wanted. It was a really crazy situation. The main problem was that the players were friends with the owners. When the players can go directly to the owners about team issues, that’s not a healthy situation. You are trying to instill discipline, and the players are out having a beer with the owners after the game.

[image]http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2012/1214/nhl_melrose_book1_200.jpg[/image]

Having players friendly with owners is an unhealthy situation that upsets the chemistry in the dressing room. Maybe you aren’t that friendly with the star who is having dinner regularly with the owner. Maybe you start to think he might be throwing you under the bus at those dinners.
Tampa Bay was an impossible scenario for a coach. The players knew it was a screwed-up situation, and I knew it was a screwed-up situation. The owners knew I wasn’t going to change, and I knew they weren’t going to change. After a short period of time, they decided I wasn’t the type of guy they wanted to run their team. I think they consulted with the players. The players didn’t really like the way I was doing things, either, so it was an easy thing for them to let me go.
Today’s players are very powerful. When I coached the L.A. Kings in 1993, there was one millionaire on the team. In Tampa Bay in 2008, there was only one guy on the team who wasn’t a millionaire.
Group ownership is also more difficult to deal with, for both coaches and players. Teams with single owners are better in so many ways. With a single owner, everyone knows where the cheques and the decisions come from, and where the buck stops. There is so much money involved now, so many tough decisions because of things like salary caps, that one voice is a lot more efficient than four or five voices. The most successful sports teams have single owners: Art Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers; Mike Ilitch of the Red Wings;
Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins; Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots; the Steinbrenner family of the New York Yankees.
You can’t have it both ways as a coach. You can’t be a disciplinarian and a buddy. You can’t be disciplining guys, trying to convince them to do what you want, and have them out socializing with the owner. My termination was the right call because it wasn’t going to work and everyone could see that.
Calling it quits early was probably the best thing for me, because I could get on with my life without a long interruption, and could pick up with ESPN where I left off.

Yesterday h NHL presented a new proposal to players. No meeting scheduled. I read they need to get deal done by Jan 5-6 to have 48 game season.
