More money pouring in
Good signs
It's the only way to compete

David Levine -> RE: General Gopher Talk (10/16/2014 4:49:38 PM)

On Sunday Team USA won their first ever World Championship in Volleyball. A big part of that team was Gopher alum Tori Dixon who played in all 13 games. Team USA defeated China in the championship match, which took place in Milan, Italy, in four sets (27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24). Congratulations Tori Dixon & Team USA!

While at the University of Minnesota, Tori, the daughter of former NFL player David Dixon, was a first team All American and a unanimous All Big Ten player. She ranks 5th on the all time list as a Gopher for blocking (507), 9th in kills (1,479) and 1st in career hitting percentage (.369). Besides being a first team All-American her senior year, she was a 2nd team member her junior year and an honorable mention both her sophomore and freshman years.

Gophers Athletics Director Norwood Teague says the university plans to break ground on its $150 million athletics village in mid-August.

Another Gophers choke-job caps off an otherwise wonderful season:

The University of Minnesota softball team was ousted from NCAA regional play Sunday night, falling to No. 12 overall seed Arizona 7-6 in eight innings in a win-or-go-home game in Tucson, Ariz.

The Gophers went ahead in the seventh inning on Taylor LeMay's three-run home run, but Arizona's Chelsea Goodacre tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and Chelsea Suitos tripled and scored on Kellie Fox's RBI single in the eighth as the Wildcats (41-18) advanced to the super regionals.

Minnesota (49-11) forced the decisive Game 2 after Paige Palkovich hit a walk-off grand slam to win the first game 5-2.

The Gophers tied a school record with 49 wins on the season.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2015 2:37:24 PM)

The real choke job was losing to Iowa early in the BT tournament. They had previously beaten Iowa 8-0 and 9-0 before getting blanked 2-0 in the tourny. If they had finished in the top 2 in the tournament as they were expected to, they would have had a much more favorable region seed.

The fact remains they choked. They lost to an inferior Iowa team when it counted most. And they lost to an inferior Arizona team when it mattered even more. It hurt that we were in Tucson for the games against Arizona.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2015 2:45:56 PM)

Was Az really that much of a choke job? They were a higher seed and basically playing home field. My point is just that if they don't blow it against Iowa, they aren't facing a team of Arizona's caliber until the WS.

It was a classic choke because the Gophers hit a big 3-run HR to take a 2-run lead late in the game, and promptly gave up the lead, the game and the series.

Lynn G. -> RE: General Gopher Talk (7/25/2015 9:22:16 AM)

I'm sure that the people at UND are awaiting my opinion on this, so I just want to say that I really hope that they don't choose "North Stars" as their new nickname. They have narrowed it down to five and I think the best one is "Fighting Hawks" - but please, oh please, don't take our North Star name for your school.

There. I'm done.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (7/25/2015 7:17:56 PM)

I'm hoping for Sun Dogs
That'll be easier to make fun of than Gophers. [:D]

btw ... could we stop the "Fighting" everything?
We do understand that's not part of the sports thingy, don't we? [&o]

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (7/25/2015 10:11:37 PM)

I swear they got confused on the point of the contest and narrowed it down to the 5 worst names instead of the 5 best. They're all horrible.

Don't be surprised if the University of Minnesota on Friday morning announces the resignation of athletics director Norwood Teague.

He got drunk and sent out "inappropriate" texts to two non-student university employees. A disgrace for him, a debacle for the U, and a disaster for the fundraising efforts.

Whoops

@UMNews
Pres. Kaler has accepted the resignation of Gopher AD Norwood Teague, effective immediately. More info to follow this afternoon.

The descent back to oblivion has begun.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (8/7/2015 9:39:22 AM)

@DWolfsonKSTP
Dr. Kaler has already personally called many of the big-time boosters/'U' related luminaries to explain the situation. Man oh man. #gophers

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (8/7/2015 9:39:48 AM)

@DerekWetmore
More details to come but from what I've gathered so far, Beth Goetz is a good choice as interim AD. Difficult situation.

Both of those statements reflect how I feel. Just when we have something going in the right direction...

I have to say it to this male dominated forum - what the freak is it about men thinking that their penis is some wondrous thing that every woman absolutely wants to have? The way that alcohol always seems to open up this "hey babe, ya wanna have some of this?" conversation never seems to end. And it makes them look like complete morons.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (8/7/2015 2:25:22 PM)

And the perpetual black cloud over this program continues. A real shame. Teague was a hell of an AD until the moment he got incredibly stupid. The profile of Gopher athletics was on the upswing and this just kicked the legs out from under it. Kaler is one of the few athletics friendly presidents the U has ever had, so hopefully he will get a quality AD in place before too long.

Well the Peggy Bundy theory is that God gave men a form of pleasure that unfortunately involves rerouting blood flow to the brain. Sometimes you have to wonder.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (8/7/2015 3:17:26 PM)

Groping too?

Lawsuit(s) on the horizon??

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The University of Minnesota released redacted transcripts of the sexual harassment complaints that led to the resignation of the school's athletic director in which two female co-workers accuse him of groping and making inappropriate advances at them.

One of the women, whose names are blacked out in the reports, told school administrators that at a recent event, what started out as her texting with Norwood Teague about setting him up with one of her friends devolved into him repeatedly pinching her butt and asking to perform oral sex on her.

The other women said Teague seemed intent on being next to her at the event and that she felt cornered by him at times. She said he kept asking when she was going to marry her boyfriend, and that he made unwelcome physical advances such as rubbing her back and poking her side.

Both women said they left the event with others because they felt that Teague might otherwise try to follow them.

Teague resigned Friday, effective immediately, and apologized for having sent "inappropriate texts" in a statement issued through television station KARE 11. He said he drank too much that night and that he will be seeking help for an alcohol problem.

"I behaved badly towards nice people and sent truly inappropriate texts," Teague said. "I'm embarrassed and I apologize to everyone involved. This neither reflects my true character or the true character of this great, great university."

The school's president, Eric Kaler, announced Teague's resignation in an email to staff, pointing out that the women who accused Teague of harassing them are not student-workers.

"To be clear, sexual harassment will not be tolerated at the University of Minnesota and I sincerely regret that our employees experienced this behavior. The University has an explicit policy and a strong code of conduct that articulates our standards," Kaler wrote.

Beth Goetz, deputy athletic director and senior woman administrator, has been named interim athletic director. Teague brought Goetz with him when he left Virginia Commonwealth University for Minnesota in 2012.

Teague was hired to replace Joel Maturi and was charged with reshaping a Golden Gophers athletic department that had fallen far behind the rest of the Big Ten in terms of facilities. Unlike Maturi, who tried to build a department that put resources into both the cash-generating sports like football and men's basketball and the lower profile sports including track and wrestling, Teague came in with a clear plan to emphasize the most popular sports in the hopes of generating more revenue that could trickle down to the rest of the department.

He set about to raise nearly $200 million to bring new practice facilities for football and men's basketball -- a gargantuan task for a school that hasn't had the type of sporting success that gets big donors to open their wallets. But Teague helped raise about $70 million in the first year of the plan, and the school had hoped to start breaking ground on new projects this fall.

Teague carved out a reputation as a basketball administrator in his previous six years as athletic director at VCU, where he teamed with coach Shaka Smart to bring the little-known program to national prominence. While at Minnesota, he fired Tubby Smith and hired Richard Pitino, the son of coaching legend Rick Pitino, to lead the men's program. He also replaced Pam Borton with Marlene Stollings on the women's side.

Teague said he planned to "reassess my career and life options. While I'm proud of my career accomplishments, I want to stop and take a look at my life and alcohol issues."

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (8/7/2015 4:25:39 PM)

A big-time #Gophers donor on Teague resigning & fundraising: "Wont affect even one-tenth of one percent." Cited Dr. Kaler/Nanne as key guys.

Donor's point: Teague's a friend, but none of us are cutting big checks because of an outsider. "Lou & Kaler are big deals," he said.
