Even former Gophers are not immune to issues these days
Oh Ricky...

Former University of Minnesota quarterback Rickey Foggie’s quest to become the new head football coach at Eagan is not over.

Foggie, who accepted the job on May 13 only to be put in a position where he was asked to resign Monday night, said Wednesday night that he would fight to keep the job.

According to Foggie and his supporters, the Eagan administration rejected his candidacy after learning that he may have inadvertently followed, and liked, a Twitter account that promotes a pornography website. At first Foggie was asked to take his Twitter site down and speak to the football players about it, which he did Monday morning. He was called back by Eagan administrators Monday evening, where he was confronted again about the Twitter site.

“It was an accidental follow, but I accepted that it was a mistake,” Foggie said. “I talked to the kids and they were so supportive. You could see in their eyes they were ready for something different. I’m not sure what changed.”

School District 196 released a statement Tuesday saying that he resigned for personal reasons. Foggie said he felt he didn’t have a choice.

“I was backed into a corner,” he said. “I was led to understand that the “like” would go away quietly if I went away quietly. But I’ve never been someone who’s involved in things like [pornography]. That’s not in my character.”

Foggie, who lives in Eagan, said his tough upbringing trained him not to back down from a fight, so he’s vowed to keep working to get the Eagan football coaching position. He’s had plenty of support from the community. According to one member of the Eagan football booster club, the school received almost two dozen calls in Foggie’s favor Wednesday.

“Most people want him here,” said Paul Bjorklund, who has a son on the football team. “We felt like when he came and apologized, it was a perfect teachable moment. The kids really wanted to play for him.”

Initally Foggie, who previously coached at Park Center and Red Wing, thought he might walk away, but discovered he had “other options.”

“A lot of people are supporting me,” he said. “I grew up in the south, where my mother and father had to fight racism every day,” said the South Carolina native. “I feel like my reputation is on the line have to protect it. And I want to do it for the kids. That’s the whole reason I coach. They’re the ones who lose out here.”

Gotta be super careful these days because people are super sensitive.
Just went thru my yearly purge of social media accounts again per orders.
Sorry to drop some of you guys and add you back every year ... but its the way it is now.

Social media stuff is getting ridiculous if a like of a tweet can get a person fired. Last I checked even if he liked an actual porno tweet Pornography is legal. In this case he liked some tweeter that in some tweet supported a porno site. Can a man have a playboy subscription and have a job? Where do we draw the line on this stuff.

How many times has Twitter gotten someone into huge trouble? I think anyone who has a job should or a family should stay off of Twitter completely.

And I'm only *kind of* kidding.

I agree Lynn. I have taken to calling it anti-social media since it seems to spawn anti-social behavior.
This Talk Vikes site is the only one I use on a regular basis. Facebook, Twitter and the rest I stay away from.

Robinson placed on paid leave.

The only mystery is how high the firings will go.

Good to see the U finally hired what appears to be a competent AD

I wish him luck on his attempt to "stop the bleeding" at this university.

Huge Gopher pep fest here in town today for our new rink unveil.
They ALL showed up.
Claeys, new AD, The Don, even Little Rickey showed and chewed some rubber chicken with us.
All is well in DinkyTown.
Every program is in awesome shape.
That said .... Very proud of our town and very thankful these busy important people took time out to come out in the sticks.
Lots of good people to be truthful. Exciting to see them.

Little Rickey should have been eating crow for the crap he's done.

The gophs come there, good deal. Your school is sending them fresh bodies. Good on you.

MARSHALL - The Marshall Tigers will be represented on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team this coming season.

Marshall graduate Drew Hmielewski will be playing wide receiver for the Gophers. Senior Blaise Andries has verbally committed to join the Gophers for the 2017 season.

Gophers head coach Tracy Claeys is excited to see what Hmielewski will do this coming season.

"Drew is somebody we signed as a wide receiver," said Claeys. "The thing I like about him is that his family is extremely athletic with his mom and his dad playing college athletics. I think he's got a good chance to help us, not only in football, but I think also he can help us in baseball. Wide receiver is a position that I think would allow him to probably play both.

"I think there's no question that with where he's at in the weight room that Drew will have a chance to come in and help us this fall."

Being a two-sport athlete can be very difficult as it is very time consuming to play even one college sport. Claeys thinks Hmielewski will be able to handle the challenge.

"He'll have to be good at time management," said Claeys. "He's a great student so I think he'll be able to handle the school part while he does that. There will have to be concessions on both sides as far as the training part of it, but I'm willing to give it a try."

Claeys has a lot of expectations for the Gophers in the upcoming season. He feels that the incoming class brings a lot of talent.

"As far as on video, it's the most athletic (incoming) class that we've had, so I think they fit in great with our needs," said Claeys. "Each year we kind of treat our scholarships like the salary cap and we have so many to each position that we try to fill. We try to look at not only this year but next year. I think they fill the needs that we need to fill for this year."

With the strength of the incoming class and the returning players, Claeys feels that they should be in contention for the Big Ten Championship this season.

"We have five years invested in this thing," said Claeys. "We've worked awfully hard and our kids have worked awfully hard, and we feel like we have our best team coming back. If we can stay healthy up front, I really feel like we should be in the talk for going to Indianapolis and playing for the Big Ten Championship Game. We'll be disappointed if we're not."

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (9/7/2016 3:22:22 PM)

The University of Minnesota has terminated head wrestling coach J Robinson, effectively immediately

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (9/7/2016 3:58:30 PM)

I think they got sick of J. playing hardball on the buy out, so the U finally said screw it and canned him.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Gopher Talk (9/8/2016 8:17:04 AM)

They did the right thing. A coach just can't take a matter like that into his own hands. He covered up an illegal drug ring, told the players to turn the drugs in to him, write an apology paper, and all would be wiped clean. He had no authority to make that deal.

I'm glad Coyle took a strong stand on this.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Gopher Talk (9/8/2016 9:40:13 PM)

I must admit Coyle has big cajones.....

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/100316aaa.html

For the first time in 12 years, the University of Minnesota volleyball program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The last time the Golden Gophers were ranked No. 1 dates back to Sept. 27, 2004.

With two road sweeps over Indiana and then-No. 14 Purdue and a Nebraska loss to then-No. 19 Ohio State, the Golden Gophers (12-1 overall, 4-0 in the Big Ten) claimed the top spot in the poll. Minnesota opened the season ranked fourth in the AVCA preseason poll. After a loss to Stanford, the Gophers dropped to No. 6, but have steadily climbed to No. 1 in the 2016 season. During the non-conference schedule, the Gophers faced six teams at the time that were either ranked or received votes. In conference action, nine Big Ten teams are currently ranked in the polls.

Minnesota is also ranked No. 2 in the first edition of the NCAA’s RPI, which is updated each Monday throughout the remainder of the season. In the top 25 alone, Minnesota has or will face eight teams in the top 25 of the RPI (Wisconsin (1), Nebraska (4), Stanford (5), San Diego (6), Purdue (7), North Carolina (8), Michigan (12) and Michigan State (19).

Four Gophers wrestlers have been suspended from competing with the team until January, a University of Minnesota spokesman said Wednesday evening.

Tommy Thorn, Larry Early, Brandon Krone and Ethan Lizak were suspended for violating team rules, the spokesman said. He declined to specify the reason for their suspensions; it’s unclear if they are related to a drug scandal that enveloped the program last spring.

I would guess that the suspensions are directly related to the drug sales. But let's not speculate.

Men's athletics Turkey of the year

The Turkey of the Year for 2016 is a large and costly entity:

Men’s Athletics at the University of Minnesota.

The male athletes provided the university with the worst basketball team in 120 years of the sport in 2015-16, the once-proud hockey team just won the second of its past 17 games vs. other Minnesota teams, the 2015 football team went 5-7 and reacted to a bowl bid as if it was deserved, and even last Saturday, there were fewer than 25,000 spectators in the stadium for a season-saving victory over Northwestern.

Also on the résumé of men’s athletics is the Xanax ring that was operating inside the wrestling team and wound up getting legendary coach J Robinson dismissed.

Oh, yeah. The fellows also had so many videos of sexual encounters floating around in the ether that the Turkey Committee was wondering if a couple of coaches had brought in Ray J as a motivational speaker.

Meantime, the women athletes at the U keep on winning and embarrassing no one.

We’re still trying to get athletic director Mark Coyle to show up today to receive the Grand Gobbler.

First, it would be good to hear his voice in public, and second, Coyle might enlighten Turkey Banquet attendees on his timeline for having an overall men’s program that the winning Gophers women can be proud of.
