The real voice of my youth.
Millions of hours listening to those classy tones.
He was the U to me. Loved that voice.

Softball

What a day! The #Gophers won their first Big Ten regular season title since 1991 and hit 50 wins in a season for the first time in program history.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/6/2017 10:33:25 PM)

#4 in the country right now and have an inside track to host a super regional. Allister has this program set up for the long haul too. A lot of the stars are freshmen and sophomores.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/7/2017 2:02:24 PM)

Awesome.
Love it when we can compete nationally in anything

The catcher is a freshman, setting school record in HRs/BB in one season. One game, I think it was vs Wisconsin, they intentionally walked her 4 times in a row.

Lindeman has pretty well destroyed every Gopher offensive record as a freshman catcher. She and second baseman McKenna Partain are both up for national freshman of the year. Maddie Houlihan was the Big Ten freshman of the year last year.

Have we established a pipeline from somewhere ... or are these Mn girls?

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/8/2017 8:38:04 PM)

They are pretty well getting players from all over. Midwest; Minnesota (7), Iowa (3), and 1 each from Wi, Il, Mi., Md., Or, Tx, Az. Groenewegen is from British Columbia, Canada.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/8/2017 8:46:58 PM)

Nice!
Thanks Sweens
Was too lazy to look.
Figured there'd be a big Mn base. Good to see the state turn out capable kids at the highest level.

Gophers dominate Big Ten softball awards: score MVP, pitcher, coach, freshman honors
Another big sweep by the 51-victory Gophers team.

By Joe Christensen Star Tribune MAY 10, 2017 — 1:32PM

The Gophers softball team swept the Big Ten awards Wednesday, with catcher Kendyl Lindaman (Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year), senior Sara Groenewegen (Pitcher of the Year) and Jessica Allister (Coach of the Year) all honored.

Lindaman leads the Big Ten in batting average (.432), slugging percentage (.932), on-base percentage (.592), home runs (19) and walks (52).
Groenewegen leads the conference in wins (27) and ERA (0.60).

The Gophers (51-3, 22-1 Big Ten) won their first regular season conference title since 1991, which is also the last time the program had a Coach of the Year honoree, with Teresa Wilson.

The Gophers had five first-team All-Big Ten selections: Lindaman, Groenewegen, Maddie Houlihan (outfield), Allie Arneson (shortstop) and Danielle Parlich (third base).

A .932 slugging percentage is phenomenal. That puts her OPS at 1.524.

Sara Groenewegen continues to own the Big Ten tournament.

One year after carrying the Gophers to a tournament title, Groenewegen tossed a no-hitter in top-seeded Minnesota’s 5-1 quarterfinal win over eighth-seeded Northwestern on Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Groenewegen, the Big Ten pitcher of the Year, struck out 11 batters. The no-hitter was the eighth of her career and second of the season.

Groenewegen carried a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing her first base runner, as Sabrina Rabin walked on a full-count to open the final frame. Groenewegen walked two batters in the seventh and Rabin went on to score thanks to a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

The second-ranked Gophers pounded out 10 hits on the way to their 23rd consecutive victory. Maddie Houlihan led the charge with three hits.

Minnesota (52-3) moves on to Saturday’s 12 p.m. semifinal, where it will face the winner of this afternoon’s quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Illinois and 12th seeded Penn State. The winner of the semifinal will advance to the conference final on Saturday night.

Go Gals!

Champs.

The semi-final game where they had to walk off HR to win was the lone scare.

Do you guys think all the success is ...
weak B10?
or
were actually pretty damn good ?

Some of their pre-B10 was against top 10 teams out west and they were competitive.

The B10 isn't all that great, and they'll find it tougher coming up, no doubt.
But the pitcher makes them a very tough out.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/13/2017 9:04:01 PM)

Good stuff Ed
Thanks

You know how it is ... some of these sports are still "that way"
VB was for a long time ... being the best in the Midwest didn't mean you could hang with the west coast teams.
That's changed Slowly

2 of the 3 losses they have are to Washington, top 10 team

3-2 and 9-0

They've beaten ranked teams

LSU (12), Cal(20)

over 50 wins is impressive, no matter what.

We'll see, when regionals start the 19th.

Should be fun to watch

The game is much bigger in certain conferences, for sure ....

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/14/2017 9:10:00 PM)

And right out of the gate the Gophers get screwed in the brackets. Conference champions. Conference tournament champions. Best record in the nation, strong RPI, but they got penalized for a 2-2 record against top 25. I guarantee you if Michigan had won the Big Ten tournament they would be hosting a super regional.
