Mallory Heyer was a nice pickup for the 2022 class. She is the #3 rated in state prospect for that class and #36 nationally. Nia Holloway is another good signing. According to prep girls she is rated #45 nationally. I don't have her in state rating.

Maya Nnaji of Hopkins will be the real test for Whalen in the 2022 class. She is #1 in the state and top 10 nationally. Nnail is a Buechers level prospect. If Whalen signs her, then it turns into one hell of a recruiting class. As always, if she goes somewhere else, I hope the scoreboard falls on her.

Gophers only have 7 players available for tonight's game. Unfortunately they may be playing with 3 or 4 players late in the game if there's foul trouble.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/1/2020 11:25:20 AM)

Lindsay needs to squeeze into a jersey, just in case.

Down a couple at the half, wound up winners, 72-68

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/2/2020 4:06:56 PM)

Looks like Kadi Sissoko's debut was worth waiting for.

24 points on 9 of 16 / 8 reb / 2 steals

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/3/2020 7:17:53 AM)

Lots of celebrating on the local stations last night
For a 4 pt win over Eastern Illinois [:-]
Sissoko does look like a player, she filled every highlight

Eastern Illinois wasn't going to be the cakewalk we should normally expect. The Gophers only had 7 players available and only 3 of them were previous starters or key reserves. Another 3 of the 7 had never played a college game before. Even Sissoko was playing her first game in 2 years. This was a situation where I'll just say a win is a win.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/9/2020 8:20:57 PM)

Our 5-star recruit just made her debut at the midway point of the 1st quarter. She is awesome!

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/9/2020 8:24:35 PM)

This Gophers team is actually pretty good.

Edit: On offense.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/9/2020 8:55:14 PM)

This will be a challenge. We're about to give up 100 in a conference game. That's not easy to do. We have a lot of skill and execution on offense. Our defense is terrible. You are what your coach is.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/9/2020 9:50:13 PM)

Bad loss on our home court. Our defense is awful.

Shockingly unathletic, imo.
Was not impressed by a couple players.
Speaking of pound it and chuck it up. Wow.
It looked like 1980s HS ball at times last night
It felt like both teams shot 13%

Other than the turnovers...

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/11/2020 10:06:34 AM)

Lindsay's 2022 class keeps getting deeper. Mara Braun, #21 ranked nationally, committed to the Gophers. That makes three of the top 5 in state recruits for 2022 committing to Whalen's program.

Except for the big whale, of course.

Wonder about the athleticism of the recruiting class.
You mentioned that after seeing the last game.

Looks like #1 in Minnesota for 2022 doesn't have the Gophers on her final list, so you know the drill, wherever you wind up, go stand under the scoreboard and wait.

Nia Holloway and Maura Braun are both supposedly really athletic. Mallory Heyer is a power player at the 4.

I've given very broad exemptions for men's basketball. Little Richie hasn't given in state recruits any reason to choose Minnesota over a blue blood program. If the go to Wisconsin, however all bets are off.

And yes, I'm a bitter vindictive prick.

Gotta be careful these days
But seriously, some of the current gals are just not great-looking athletes
There's plodders and then there's gazelles
We lean towards the plodders. Sorry, just what I see right now.
The ball hits the floor a lot on rebounds, that's your first clue.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/12/2020 4:50:28 PM)

UConn freshman Paige Bueckers finally got a chance to show what she can do at the college level.

Bueckers had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists in her UConn debut, leading the third-ranked Huskies to a 79-23 victory over UMass-Lowell on Saturday.

Bueckers, last year's national high school player of the year, also had collected five steals while playing shutdown defense.

Anything in there about falling scoreboards?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (12/15/2020 10:21:21 AM)

Looks like Lindsay has a lot of work to do. She has recruited some talent and gotten a couple of good transfers, but now it's on her to coach them up. I'm a huge Whalen fan, but frankly the results ain't there. That was a massacre last night.
