Come to the dark side. It's more fun over here. [:'(]

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/9/2013 10:18:29 PM)

What is that, our 3rd or 4th win at IL in the last 40 years or so?

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/9/2013 10:19:36 PM)

Its 'officially' our first 3-0 conference start since 1974-76.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/9/2013 10:19:41 PM)

At the most
Always a House of Horrors

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/9/2013 10:30:02 PM)

We finally have a depth of athletic explosive guards and wing players. No more needing Blake Hoffbarber and Travis Busch to run off screens to score points. No more soft Ralph Sampson III on the inside. No more Al Nolan who couldn't shoo the ball in the ocean from the end of a pier at high tide. This is very much a team in the Tubby mold. Choke the shit out of you defensively, pressure, create turn overs and attach the basket. I didn't realize we were the only team in the country to get to the line 20+ times in every game.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/9/2013 10:31:28 PM)

Now it's on to face the #5 team in the country in their house before coming home to face the #2 team in the country.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/9/2013 10:43:03 PM)

Attack the basket. They sure do.

And played great perimeter D. Illinois 3-24 on trey attempts.

The bench has to give more. I'd be surprised if Mav comes in before Welch. Another game he crapped his pants.

Mbakwe was a man again tonight. Loved Coleman's game. If he can get confidence and consistency shooting a 3, he'd be really tough.

Had that one really dumb full court pass, else they broke the press so nicely. Lots of high percentage finishes late.

It's tough to make the team at Duke though.

Rodney Williams is gonna be a super stud next year. Mbakwe will probably be back and he is what he is (10-15 points and rebounds each night, which you can't complain about). Andre Hollins will keep developing before our eyes.

I've been waiting for this.

I'm so smart.

There is a saying, live by the J, die by the J.

Not good idea to count on outside shooting to win. We so often see if one person gets hot, others do, and same for going cold.

What I like about this Gopher team, we see different players step up on different days. Last night it was Joe

Any odds on Tyus Jones committing to Minnesota?
Would be a great transition from one stud guard to the next.

Will the Gophers make the Final 4 this year?

The bench had better improve. Again last night, no help outside of Welch settling the point, while Hollins got a break.

Austin Hollins and Joe Coleman worry me most with their hot/cold shooting. If they get hot, that's great....until they start to go cold, but continue to shoot anyway. Seems like Coleman is more likely to understand he shouldn't shoot long jumpers on nights when it's not falling.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/10/2013 1:29:32 PM)

Rewatching the game again today
We are athletic
Not sure we've ever been more athletic
Even in our best years (before you guys were born) ... We were never this well-rounded athletically.
Everyone's in shape. Everyone's strong. We're quick and fast and smart.
It's a good club. If the bench learns to contribute more, we will be dangerous to anyone in the country.
That said ..... The Illinois had as bad a shooting night as they will ever have. Some of it was our D, but they had plenty of good looks.
Fun win in a tough place.
Two more great challenges coming up.
We will know where we stand after those two. In the conference, and in the land.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/10/2013 1:33:45 PM)

My favorite thing so far about them is one of my quirks ....
When we get the chance .... We SLAM the ball home.
I cannot stand missed bunnies. if you are big nd athletic, SLAM the damn ball every chance you get.
It's sure, it's fun, and it's demoralizing to your opponent. These guys appear to get that.

If you weren’t impressed by this Minnesota team already — and if you weren’t, you haven’t been paying attention — you can feel free to be so now. The phrase “statement game” is overused almost to the point of meaninglessness, but this game at Illinois did have that vibe. It was a big, physical, athletic and most of all complete Big Ten title contender asserting itself early and often, and enjoying every minute of it along the way. Illinois, so impressive this past weekend against Ohio State, was overwhelmed. This Saturday, the Gophers head to Bloomington. Do not be shocked if they win in that Assembly Hall, too.

Watching Mo Walker is painful. HUGE guy, plays softer than Sampson did. Board it and try a soft lay in. Eats the ball.

Illini got boards, but the Gophs pounded them. Forced them to hack.

After watching a few years of giving e-z trey's game in/game out, i love seeing guys leaping to challenge the shots. Makes a big diff.

Guarantee Illinois won't go 3-24 again on the home floor. I actually wanted them shooting 3's at the end, MN had gotten into their heads.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/10/2013 3:32:04 PM)

The thing about Jones is that he has a friend in Chicago, Jahlil Okafor - the top center recruit in the class, who is allegedly a packaged deal with him. Tubby and Jones have tried to get Okafor to make a visit to Minnesota, but he has no interest. Given this, I think it's highly unlikely that Jones lands here. If it weren't for this, I'd put the odds more at 1:4 type territory.

Right now this feels like a Sweet Sixteen to Elite Eight-type team. They need to play the way I expect this season (winning all home games against the non-cream of the conference, and all road games against the Nebraska and Penn State types, and steal a few others) to get a 2-5 seed or this will be an uphill climb. Second Round to Final Four is the broader range. I don't see the depth or true scorer to win it all, but anything can happen and Andre Hollins could become that guy by season's end.
