[quote="TJSweens"]Tubby landed a pretty decent prospect. http://www.twincities.com/gophers/ci_6953555 Yeah he did. Nice to see us get a guy who had offers from Florida, UCLA, Kentucky and Nebraska. This is promising too:
quote:

Gophers fans hope to see him form a towering frontcourt tandem with 6-foot-11 Georgia center Ralph Sampson III, who joined Iverson on his visit to Minnesota two weeks ago. The schools recruiting Sampson the most intensely are Georgia Tech, Minnesota and Kentucky, according to rivals.com. "They really got along well," said Chuck Iverson about his son and Sampson. "Colt hopes to play with him at Minnesota."

Tubby picked up his 3rd commitment. This one from a juco player. U men's basketball lands recruit Bostick is the third player to make a verbal commitment under new coach Tubby Smith. Devron Bostick, a 6-4 small forward at Southwestern Illinois Community College, verbally committed Friday to play basketball for the Gophers next season after a visit in September, according to Southwestern Illinois assistant coach Steve Campo. Bostick was National Junior College Athletic Association All-America last year as a freshman, after averaging 19 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He is the third player to make a verbal commitment to play for the Gophers next season. South Dakota prep power forward Colton Iverson and West Plains (Mo.) junior college power forward Paul Carter committed earlier.

Since he is a Juco, why didn't he bring him in this year? I don't think Tubby filled the 2 scholarships that were left available with the 2 transfers.

He probably has to fulfill academic requirements to gain admission as well. Tubby will bank scholarships for next year rather than use them to get someone in this year for the sake of getting someone in.

I realize the source is The Shooter, but let's hope this is true: http://www.twincities.com/dailydose/ci_7272867 Don't be surprised if 6-foot-11 Ralph Sampson III of Duluth (Ga.) Northview High School commits to the Gophers within 48 hours. If that happens, coach Tubby Smith's inaugural recruiting class at Minnesota could jump into the top 10 nationally. Smith already has commitments from 6-10 prep Colton Iverson of Yankton, S.D., and junior college players Paul Carter (6-8 ) of Missouri State and Devron Bostick (6-4) of Southwestern Illinois. The Gophers have two tenders remaining, and, a little birdie says, could have three if one player doesn't improve his status.

Ralph Sampson III commits to the U. Way to go Tubby. :salute: :buttrock: http://www.twincities.com/gophers/ci_7283149 My God! The Shooter called it! The Shooter actually got it right. The world is suddenly in chaos. I know it's chaos because you can hear pigs being slaughtered. Women are weeping, men are gnashing their teeth. And there are sounds so hideous I cannot describe them to you or you will flee from the room.

Second best in the Big 10 behind Ohio State ?!?! Get Sampson on the dotted line when signing day comes...GREAT news.. I think flaming hail will be falling in the next thunderstorm. 7th in the NATION!?!?!

These are certainly different times for Gopher men's hoops. Nothing I'd like more than a revival. A cold winter night, the Barn's rafters shaking...with a pre and/or post game session a Stub and Herbs. Doesn't get any better.

Now that shouldn't be long, because in basketball, unlike football, they can sign prior to the season. I don't know the reason but it is there. Maybe because of the type seasons they don't make recruiting visits during it like they do in Football.

I wonder if Tubby is just more comfortable here, or if something else was going on at Kentucky that we don't know about. He sure couldn't recruit there compared to what he should have been doing, so it's odd that he's off to such a great start at Minnesota. One of my best buddies coached highschool ball out here and went to a coaching clinic with all of the greats (Coach K/Wooden/Roy Williams/Westhead/Tubby, etc.) and got to talk with Tubby for a while. Said he loved him. I really wonder if there's some other problem at Kentucky that we don't know about. I guess we'll see soon as Gillespie is a great coach. So if he isn't able to recruit there, we'll know. He got off to a great start too though getting Patrick Patterson, probably the best PF in the nation. I was really hoping Duke would get him. If they did, I think they'd be the favorite to win it all since they have the deepest backcourt in the nation. Coach K always kills when he has that inside/outside game. Anyway, I digress. Hopefully Tubby can keep this up. That would be great. As a side note I thought you guys might like, my friend said he was blown away by Paul Westhead. If you remember, he ran that nutty, amazing LMU squad years ago that could score at will. He said Westhead would apparently yell at his players if they didn't have the ball out of the basket and the outlet to halfcourt in something like 2 seconds. And there was a great story there too I guess; Roy Williams was talking about a game where Kansas played LMU in Westhead's day and they were up by about 20 at the half. Roy said one of his assistants turned to him and said "how you doing coach?" Roy's reply? "I'm nervous as hell." Game keeps going at about the same pace, and with about 5-6 minutes left, they're still up 20. Same assistant says, "how you doing now Roy?" Roy's reply: "I'm still nervous as hell." That's how great that offense was. So fun to watch. Vance Wahlberg at Pepperdine has kind of the same thing going now with a similar program of his (taught Calipari it at Memphis, and now also taught it to Denver in the NBA). Between that Pepperdine team (should be exciting if nothing else) and USC and UCLA this year, it's gonna be a great year for LA college ball for sure. Anyway, I'll shut up now. ;)

A nice blowout win against a very good Mankato team last night. If things break right, and the seniors (top scoring returning trio in the Big Ten) lead like they are capable of, this is a team that could surprise in the Big 10 this season. I'd be very surprised if we don't make the Field of 65 this season.

Not to mention it just stands to reason that Tubby will get a hell of a lot more out of these guys than Monson could.

Congrats to the Gophs for a win at Iowa State. With basically the same cast, Tubby has already proven to me he has a clue on coaching compared to Dan Monson. Of course, there are many others with more of a coaching clue than Monson has.

Was checking the box score of the Mich State / UCLA game. I see Isaiah Dahlmann didn't play. Also see he's played 8 whole minutes this year. Wonder how much fun he's having gathering slivers for Tom Izzo?

Bingo Tuby scored again. http://www.twincities.com/gophers/ci_7529977?nclick_check=1 Before this 4 star player signed, the Gophers had the 12th rated incoming class. I can't wait to hear where this brings them. Wow, 2 4 * and 2 3* in the same year. Brewster will have his work cut out for him to compete with Tuby.

Wow. Just wow. I've been going to Gopher Basketball games my whole life. My mom has been a season ticket holder since Musselman's first season, and I've been going since McHale was a freshman. Since moving to CA, I only get to go to a few games a year, and I've started to pay less attention the last few years, but man, I've never been this excited for the program. Really hope Big 10 Network shows most of the games.

Tubby brought immediate star power and credibility to the program.
