I get the Flip aversion, but I just don't see the huge risk. To me, Flip's hypothetical worst-case scenario is that he's basically Tubby 2.0: he's not a great recruiter (neither was Tubby), he doesn't have a ton of energy (neither did Tubby), and he doesn't connect well with younger players (neither did Tubby). On the other hand, Flip's undoubtedly one smart dude and a good basketball mind. The idea that he's some terrible basketball coach is, I think, off-base.

The risk on a guy like Anthony Grant or Chris Mack? Dan Monson 2.0 (general incompetence) and an absolutely empty Barn.

And here's one other consideration. Outside of Stevens/Hoiberg/Williams, I don't see a candidate more likely than Flip to reel in at least 2 of the big 3. It's so hard to overstate the importance of that recruiting class to this program. Any coach who gets them has the springboard to push this program to new heights. And to all three of those guys, Flip is a big name with legit NBA cred. To be honest, I could see Tyus giving the Gophers more of a shot because of Flip more than for just about any other candidate, including Shaka.

I think Flip Saunders, as good a fit with some donors, is not a good selection.

I always felt that Tubby looked to the U of M to finish out his career.

I could see that with Flip but Flip does have the allegiance to the alma mater going for him.

But bringing back alums doesn't work out that frequently.

The U of M is not an elite BB institution. Bring in someone who views it as a stepping stone to get to an elite institution with respect to BB. If the U follows up and does its part, a practice facility and an upgrade to williams, then if the young hungry coach is successful, maybe he can stay for 20 years and get the U to that elite level. If the U fails to provide the necessary support, than the coach can get some success and move on.

KU is in the tournament for the 24 straight year. Many thought three appearances in Tubby's tenure was just fine.

No way is this AD and his staff who have carved out a national process for identifying coaches and university fits will go with Flip.

Twitter is the BEST for this sort of thing. Tons of rumors going on that Stevens is landing in 40 minutes on a private plane in MPLS. And who are we to doubt Twitter?

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2013 4:18:10 PM)

Many of the people happy with 3 tourneys in the last 6 are still hanging onto all those division titles with Gardy.

Sad

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2013 4:18:16 PM)

Also getting reports on Twitter that Stevens has agreed to coach both UCLA and Minnesota. I'm cool with that.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2013 4:18:32 PM)

Scott - not Norwood?

You two (Dave and SMF) better figure out the wife situation before you have any more kids SMF.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2013 4:25:07 PM)

Here is the thing about Tubby....none of his assistants received consideration for other jobs......that is the one thing about Brewster (Even though he sucked as a coach, he got the recruits and had good assistants).

What we need from the new coach is one that: 1) can recruit and 2) fill in his coaching or recruiting inadequacies with assistants that can......Tubby couldn't do 1 or 2...

I think Teague and his assistant can get the Top Young Assistants to sign on under Flip if he is hired....with a chance to take over in a few years.

The problem with the Monson hire is that is top assistant was the better coach....

If Sanford and Fairview can merge, why not UCLA and U of M.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2013 4:25:35 PM)

I find it interesting how many have come out against firing Tubby.

Just don't get it. This was a 15-1 team that sunk like a rock, and a program that failed to finish .500 in the conference for SIX YEARS under Tubby.

And that's OK??!!??

Exactly
The big ten record was horrible
And not every year has it been filled with quality teams

Hey......I am paying MN property taxes.

I grew up with MN Mediocrity.

Mediocrity is my middle name.

Well, slightly above Mediocrity.

I am above average like all the kids from Lake Wobegon.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2013 4:31:30 PM)

I give it to Izzo and Bo...they can recruit a 1-5 star player and coach them up and get the most of them......with Tubby every player ends up almost an enigma:  Williams, Mbawke, Nolen, etc., etc.

If it was me...I didn't see a future for Ingram, Welch, or even Williams at the end....Tubby should have played the hell out of Eliason, Walker (after he got healthy), and Ellenson (especially for someone that likes to mass substitute)....

Blake Hoffarber made the most of his talent but I don't believe it was because of Tubby---he could just shoot the hell out of the ball.

I remember about 4 games that Dre Hollins won games for the Gophers this year by carrying everyone....that has nothing to do with Tubby...

Exactly. As has been noted before, how many guys have finished their U time better ball players than they came in?
