On the one hand, the Gophers almost certainly aren't Pitino's destination job. On the other hand, if he wins enough to be desired by a destination job, who cares? My fear is that he'd have some success for 2-3 years and then jump ship without really boosting the program's status at all. My other fear is that he's jumped into a pool that's too far over his head. But given his reputation as a sharp basketball mind and a tireless worker, maybe we'll be okay.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/3/2013 1:59:20 PM)

If he is a good coach while he is here and succeeds, he raises the profile for the next guy. When new facilities are built and existing ones are upgraded, it could turn into a long term relationship.

Now let's be clear. There is nothing pending that we know of. They were supposedly all set to schedule the presser for Flip when that deal fell apart.

@ESPNAndyKatz 5m
Just filed to ESPN, story coming, Minnesota close to finalizing a deal with FIU coach Richard Pitino.

AP Sources: Minnesota is in advanced talks with Richard Pitino to be the next coach of the Gophers.

@DarrenWolfson 49s
No debating with the Richard Pitino hire that Teague and Ellis wanted their own guy. #gophers

This is happening, folks.

I like it. It will be exciting to watch, at the very least.

I'm leaning this direction. It will be interesting to see if his dad's kind of style can play in the B1G. Now hit the recruiting trail, sir.

AP Sources: Gophers in talks with Richard Pitino
By JON KRAWCZYNSKI and TIM REYNOLDS
— Apr. 3 2:59 PM EDT

Minnesota is in advanced discussions with Richard Pitino, the son of Louisville coach Rick Pitino, to take over for Tubby Smith.

Two people with knowledge of the discussions say Pitino engaged in negotiations with Minnesota officials on Wednesday. The people requested anonymity because the deal has not been formally completed.

In his lone season at Florida International, Pitino led the Panthers to an 18-14 record, the school's first winning season in 13 years. He will turn 31 in September, fitting the profile of the young, up-and-comer that Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague has preferred to hire in the past.

If a deal is completed, Pitino will replace Smith, who was fired last week after six seasons at Minnesota. Smith was hired at Texas Tech on Monday.

I like it too.

Its a bold move, its a young guy - but a young guy with a serious pedigree.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/3/2013 2:12:55 PM)

Go for it. I can't wait to see how recruiting goes.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/3/2013 2:15:56 PM)

If they get this to the finish line, I will be very happy. You were right Ed, this is so much more exciting than a Flip hire.

ESPN says they were going to interview Eric Musselman, but told him not to come because they had their coach.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/3/2013 2:19:30 PM)

Skilz hit on a good point. As much as I'd like to think, it's not a star program. They've had moments, just not enough.

If this works, Rich has an opp to start the transformation of the program.

I definitely am behind this move. But let's remember that a lot of people were really excited by the Tim Brewster move, too. I recognize Pitino has quite a different pedigree than Brewster -- but this is still a fairly big risk.

Yeah, bold moves are fun. We'll see how the boosters like it -- let's hope they open the wallets.

Richie has a rep as a great recruiter -- then again, recruiting to Louisville and Florida is a little different game than recruiting here. I wonder if the Big 3 will give him a listen?

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/3/2013 2:23:49 PM)

A good comment from a poster over at Daily Gopher:

He's a fascinating combination of young, up and coming, ambitious, energetic and yet still a name. Just not the guy who made the name famous, but nonetheless, one that will open doors in recruiting.

Yeah. Pitino is at least qualified for the job...

I want to know what Tyus Jones thinks of the hire.

Sadly, it probably doesn't matter. I'm not sure anyone could have gotten him. And I'm not sure Richard has much of a shot at any of the Big 3, either.

Big next step is finding assistants. It'd be great to find at least one with strong local or Midwest ties -- and preferably to the Big 3 and the local AAU scene.

I have heard and read a few times that the Gophers have a legitimate shot at Reid Travis. I'm guessing Jones is practically signed sealed and delivered to Duke. It was one of his dreams come true when he attended Coach K's basketball camp at Duke.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/3/2013 2:52:22 PM)

For full disclosure, I'd prefer a Flip hire over Pitino -- I think he's a good coach, he'd milk the boosters for all they're worth, and give us a slightly better shot at 1 or more of the Big 3 (I recognize that this view isn't shared by many here).

That being said, Pitino also has huge upside -- and hopefully, like Shaka, would feel some loyalty and want to stick around if he has success here. I'll be very closely watching the assistant hires -- they'll be critical.
