Joey King benefits from No Mo.

20 pts tonight.

Some of the comments in the Strib article about Travis' declaration that he's going to Stanford were interesting. They're comparing this to a Lebron moment because of the ego neediness and the deception by sitting behind the Gophers at a recent game - - - and then having the announcement here and calling Gopher contacts to come to his announcement press conference.

It's like he set it up intentionally to make it appear that he was picking Minnesota - and then hit everyone in the gut with the word "Standford." It must have fulfilled some kind of need his ego had to see a bunch of faces fall with disappointment.

Maybe we don't want someone with that level of need to have his ego stroked.

Or we could believe him when he says that he was still undecided as recently as 2 days ago.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/8/2013 9:28:38 PM)

You know - it's possible that's the truth, but when he talked about how he felt at home there the very first time he visited, and that great connection with the coach, etc. - it sure sounds like he knew where he wanted to go a long time ago.

I'm sure that's all true.

And I'd bet that Pitino did a hell of a job getting him to consider changing his mind - despite being so late to the race. So he probably was torn about the decision.

I haven't heard a single bad word about the kid as a person, so I don't in any way think we dodged a bullet by having him sign elsewhere.

drew -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/8/2013 10:01:20 PM)

Major bummer, all signs were pointing to him staying at home. But, it's hard to be mad at a 17 year old kid that is choosing to get a free education at Stanford. And, as DL said, he is by all accounts a standup kid. It's a blow to the U, but I think academics are a big factor to Reid and it's hard to compete with Stanford.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/9/2013 8:06:55 AM)

A couple nice signs from last night's game:

Eliason with 17 rebounds (and 11 points).

Mathieu with 9 assists.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/9/2013 9:15:05 AM)

Good points. I also don't begrudge a kid who has a chance to get a degree from Stanford.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/9/2013 9:44:11 AM)

He wanted his mother to be able to say that one son is at Harvard and the other at Stanford.

GopherFan34 -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2013 8:20:41 PM)

Hard work is what defines you as being successful, not what school you go to. Either school is going to give you a quality education if you want to put in the work. The kid has NBA potential, whose he kidding, just tell it like it is.

drew -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2013 8:39:16 PM)

I see him as having NBA potential, but not being a sure fire NBA player. He definitely could be, though. But I'm sure having a Stanford degree opens up more opportunities than a Minnesota degree. I'm not saying the U is a bad school, just that Stanford is one of those "elite" schools.

If his decision were just about basketball, I think he would be staying at home. Dawkins is on the hot seat and Stanford just signed another 4 star PF prior to Travis committing.

Or else we're dealing with an 18 year old kid trying to figure out his college choice.  Way too much arm chair psychology going on here.

Certainly, I thought it was looking good for the Gophers given the press conference being open to the public and his attedance at the game, and certainly, I'm disappointed we didn't get him.  Can't be mad at the kid, though, or draw sweeping conclusions about his ego.  By all accounts, he's a good kid.

I currently can't see Mathieu having a lot of B10 success. He's so small.
It's only 1 game. Just not that impressed w/him.

Only a very few make it to the NBA. It's not like baseball or football. While I did go to the U of M, I do believe that there are schools that are really, really hard to get into and there are reasons for that. Of course we all are disappointed that he didn't stay home, but I for one can not blame him doing what he thinks is best for himself and his family.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/14/2013 2:11:58 PM)

ESPN 1500 Mackey

From what I'm hearing about #Gophers hoops, Richard Pitino being praised for his ability to relate to players, ability to teach and explain.

Imagine that. Very rarely did Tubby get a player to actually improve under his regime.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/14/2013 2:13:52 PM)

Oh come on Ed. He'd give em that stare and they'd shape up right away.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/14/2013 2:40:19 PM)

I am of the belief that, like Monson before him, he coached players down the longer they were in the system.

Pitino has already got more out of Eliason and Mo then Tubby ever did -- even though Mo has played in one game thus far.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/14/2013 6:29:24 PM)

Do the Gophers have a team that can stand up to the physical play of the Big Ten? We know that they are not going to be out conditioned.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/15/2013 3:21:59 PM)

Tyus Jones to Duke. What a shock. [&o]

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/15/2013 3:22:42 PM)

I have already received a text from Dustin congratulating himself and Pete.  Puke.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/15/2013 3:26:47 PM)

@1500ESPN_Reusse
Tyus Jones to Duke. #deadtome

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/15/2013 3:41:27 PM)

I think it has been pretty well known that Jones was signed, sealed and delivered to Puke for a couple of years now. When the kid begs his parents to send him to Coach K's summer camp when he was in Jr High the writing is pretty well on the wall.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/15/2013 4:10:46 PM)

Yep, no suspense there whatsoever.

At least he didn't pull a Cliff Alexander -- grabbed the IU hat, then dropped it and grabbed the KU hat.  OUCH.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/15/2013 4:43:21 PM)

Yep and the Jones / Jahlil Okafor package deal came to fruition for Coach K. I don't know, but for some reason the fact that it is was Puke instead of anywhere else on the planet makes me hope that they blow out all 4 combined ACL's. Sorry. I know it's irrational and vindictive, but it's how I feel.

I'm pulling for mediocrity and bench sitting. Then transfer out after a couple years of nothing.

Only thing worse would have been if they picked Wisconsin.
