Excellent news...if only Oturu too.

Not much chance of that.
Phil have you been absent for a long time? I don't think I've seen you around. Or am I totally wrong?

Seven footer bolts Drake for the U

Led nation in blocked shots and scored about 14/game.

Has to sit out one year. Otherwise I would be really pumped. Still sorta pumped.

That has yet to be determined. The NCAA will vote on a one time waiver transfer rule this summer.

It seems we may not have discussed this guy enough. Doogie reports that Pitino feels that Robbins is a big time star level college player. That they are pretty optimistic about him being declared eligible right away. Here's an interview with him I found on YouTube.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (10/12/2020 9:51:52 AM)

The recent success Richard Pitino’s had with big men led to a commitment Saturday from three-star Swedish center Kenny Pohto.

Pohto, a senior at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kan., announced his decision on Instagram after being offered scholarships by Nebraska and Wichita State.

Sunrise Christian coach Luke Barnwell said Pohto has grown this year to 6-foot-11 and nearly 240 pounds, but can play both frontcourt positions. The native of Stockholm was intrigued by Pitino’s development of post players, including potential 2020 NBA first-round pick Daniel Oturu.

“He was trying to find the right fit at the highest level,” Barnwell told the Star Tribune. “He’s very, very skilled and has IQ. He saw a system where those big guys Coach Pitino had have been moved around and used all over the place. He saw a fit from a style of play, and also with a chance to play in one of the best leagues in the country.”

The connection was strong with Gophers assistant Kyle Lindsted, a former Sunrise Christian head coach and Wichita State assistant. Pohto is ranked the 142nd best player nationally by 247sports.com.

"I feel like I can help wherever they need me," Pohto told 247sports.com recruiting analyst Eric Bossi. "I’m a versatile player, I can guard 1-5, I have good basketball IQ, I shoot the ball very well, I can put it on the floor, I can take advantage of mismatches if I have a really big dude I can take him to the perimeter and I can bury a little dude in the post."

Pitino now has two players committed to the 2021 recruiting class, including 6-11 LaLumiere Academy (Ind.) big man Treyton Thompson, who is from Alexandria, Minn.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/9/2020 8:42:04 PM)

The last transfer the Gophers needed to bolster hopes of a turnaround season received good news Monday when the NCAA approved Utah transfer Both Gach’s waiver to play immediately.

Gach, a 6-foot-6 Austin, Minn. native, is a projected starter for Richard Pitino in the backcourt. He is the second transfer to have a waiver granted to avoid sitting out this season, joining Drake 7-footer Liam Robbins.

“He certainly has all of the attributes to be a really good player,” ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla said of Gach. “They can go eight or nine deep now with Robbins and [Western Michigan graduate transfer] Brandon Johnson. I’m anxious to see them. I like Richard’s team.”

Earlier projections for Minnesota in Pitino’s eighth season were near the bottom of the Big Ten before his transfers were eligible. Now with Gach in the mix officially this year, joining an already strong backcourt, the expectations jump considerably for the Gophers in the Big Ten and nationally.

“Both’s a great player,” said Gophers guard Marcus Carr, who was named to the preseason All-Big Ten team on Monday. “Like me, he likes to get downhill. He’s very athletic and can shoot the ball as well. He brings a lot of different things to the game. Definitely a huge boost for us.”

On the same day Gach’s waiver was ruled on, Carr was the first U guard to be picked to the All-Big Ten preseason team since both Nate Mason and Amir Coffey in 2017-18.

Carr has the highest assists per game (6.7) returning among all power conference players. With Carr (15.4 points per game) and fellow junior Gabe Kalscheur (11.6), the Gophers join Io-wa, Michigan, and Rutgers as the only four Big Ten teams with at least two double figure scorers returning in the backcourt.

Gach seems like a real good get
Expected him to be at the U after HS, but I guess we take em when we get em.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 8:20:01 AM)

This means the heat should be at maximum intensity and right under Little Richie's ass.

Carr returned

Added Liam Robbins who is on the watch list for the nation's top centers

Added Both Gach, who if I understand correctly, is an Amir Coffey clone.

Add a few high end recruits and if Pitino can't raise some hell in the conference and advance in the tournament, it will give him a one way ticket out of here.

Good news if Gach is a Coffey clone.

That'll set up the Richard Pitino ISO offense where Gach gets the ball and runs down the clock trying to put up an impossible shot with multiple defenders on him.

He really does run a piss poor offensive scheme, doesn't he.

IF

IF

These guys are all that, that are back and added

Should be a more diverse offense and have some flow rather than the ISO nonsense

Right?

what's missing from this roster?

https://gophersports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster

No more

HURT

Thank goodness.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 8:30:34 AM)

In theory he has several kids 6'8" or taller to run in the 4 and 5 spots.

A couple redshirt seniors.

SHOULD be better than before.

And you're right, if not....then it's time to move on from Pitino.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 8:33:58 AM)

Hate to always relate to old-days teams all the time, but remember when ...
Couple years the Gophers had
Olberding-Landsberger-Thompson-McHale-Rautins-Winey-etc etc rosters?
Loaded with riches, height and length galore. I think we had a run there where we were by far the longest, tallest roster in America.
Just reminiscing a little ... [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 8:34:46 AM)

What is the status of the Golden Boy, btw Ed?
Is he still in HS?
Or at Duke I imagine?
Or is he planning a U career?

Loved those old Mussy and Dutcher teams.

Yeah, and these guys may not reach that talent level, but this roster is bigger

one kid 5'10"

the rest are 6'2" or taller

10 of the rest are 6'5" or taller

If you're referring to Matthew Hurt...shows what happens when they shut down a year midseason

soph at Duke

The youngest King...Eli...mulling over football offers (Notre Dame among them) and basketball offers (Stanford among them)

He's definitely NOT the Golden boy I'm told. Works well w/teammates and such...but has that cock of the walk edge.

Yeah, forgot that he was freshman last year, since the season didn't end normally, with Duke a high tournament seed, then choking in the tournament.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 11:32:27 AM)

Strib says projected lineup

Carr 6'2"
Kaleschur 6'4"
Gach 6'6"
Brandon Johnson 6'8"
Robbins 7'0"

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 12:24:00 PM)

Had to go back and look

In 76-77 and 77-78, the Gophers went

6'10"
6'10"
6'10"
Across the front
McHale-Thompson-Winey

Crazy times
Lingenfelter at 6'9" off the bench
Ray Williams was a 6'2" guard who played big as well.
Those were the days when they used a lot of photos from below the court level at the Barn
It looked like the Land of the Giants

Nice

Too bad they had some tournament ineligible teams.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 12:49:11 PM)

LOL

reading a bit of the history per Wikipedia

Can't stay out of trouble

The Golden Gophers have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 14 times. Their combined record is 15–13. However, their tournament appearances from 1972, 1994, 1995 & 1997 have been vacated making their official record 9–10.

So when they ARE good

look for the NCAA to sniff around and find violations of some kind.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 12:54:03 PM)

For tiny infractions
Total screw job by the NCAA
While their golden boys in Vegas and Duke and Kentucky ran professional programs.
F the NCAA

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 1:02:46 PM)

Agree with Wiki

the 24-3 team could have been one of the best in the country. Remember watching them. Thompson in the middle McHale on the baseline.

Yep. I remember watching them blow Al McGuire's Marquette team out of their own arena that year, only to watch Marquette win the national title later in the year, while the Gophers weren't even in the tournament

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/10/2020 2:01:45 PM)

Two incredible big men
And Ray Williams was a blast
O Lockhart was smooth
Hell, even Flip was fun to watch (my idol at the time)
