I hate to be so negative........but this sets up perfectly for the greatest collapse in Gophers history. Considering what is on the line today (likely NCAA bid), it would be worse than the football team's collapse against Michigan several years ago.

That's the one thing that is gnawing at me. Don't find a way to let this get away. They start so strong, and like David pointed out last night, then pound and do squat with a lead in the 2nd half.

It will happen. They run the shot clock down to 5 seconds, then run their offense which consists of making a pass to a big guy....nothing there...pass it back to Joseph, Westbrook or Hoffarber at 25 feet...and launch one that has no chance. That's what happens when you try to run a 5 second offense.

Could put us back in the Dance!

I can't see how they could keep us out with a win today. Knocking off the #6 and #11 teams (and the 2 and 3 seed in the tourney).

But according to ESPN gurus we aren't one of the last 4 in or one of the first 4 out. So that leaves us at least 4 teams to jump, because there's no way ESPN gurus are saying we are already in. I personally would think a win today should be enough.

I was torn in the earlier game. If Illinois had won, yes, we'd have a better chance of winning the championship. But a loss to Ohio State would look better on the resume than a loss to Illinois.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 4:41:29 PM)

Sampson promptly misses the bunny of all bunnies to start the 2nd half.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 4:42:15 PM)

Why are we passing up 2 foot shots in favor of 20 foot shots?

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 4:48:49 PM)

Same old. We're in stall mode already. And it's not working.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 5:06:19 PM)

Hmmm

Iverson/Sampson wore them out in the first half, yet barely on the floor together in the first 9 minutes of the 2nd half.

The offense seems to run better when Westbrook is NOT on the floor.  Tho they are back into taking 20 seconds off without even a freakin' pass.

Need Cory Joseph next year, just to handle the ball for that long. [&o]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 5:39:55 PM)

FINALLY

Wonder when the last time was that the Gophs beat back to back top 15 teams.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 5:46:51 PM)

Tubby is earning his pay.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 5:54:54 PM)

If Illinois at 19-14 gets in and the U doesn't at 21-12, I'll be a little miffed.  The heck w/RPI. Makes absolutely NO sense to put one team, a game ahead of the other in the conference, into
the NCAA with 19-14 for a record.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 5:55:15 PM)

Especially after the Gophs beat ILL on their home floor.

drew -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 9:52:01 PM)

I hope you guys are right, but I still wouldn't be surprised if we get left out if we lose tomorrow.  The bubble keeps shrinking with these upsets today.  I'm with you Ed, if we get left out, it better not be because Illinois gets in instead of us.

As far as the game, I would have never guessed it would have played out the way it did.  We just flat housed them, and it was never competitive.  Purdue just might have dropped from a #2 seed to a #5 in one day.  It seems like someone has taken over Iverson's body, he has been super.  Even Sampson was awake for the game today and seemed to care a little bit.  Joseph has come a long way since he took over at the point, he's doing a much better job of taking care of it.  Tomorrow will be our toughest test yet, OSU is very good.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/13/2010 10:14:39 PM)

Worry not gents.  We will whoop ass again tomorrow [8|]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 11:29:40 AM)

Never felt comfy, even with Purdue playing the worst game in college bb history.
They had lanes, they had open looks, they simply were awful.
If we had better hands, we could play with anyone.
We do all the little things pretty well. We are long and athletic, yet insist on playing small, by bringing the ball down into areas we shouldn't under the basket.
The yo-yo-ing 30 feet from the basket drives us all crazy, doesn't it?
And yet we are one step away from winning the tourney.
Too much to ask today, but I hope we play well.
OSU is loaded and playing well.
I believe we are already in the dance, but will not be one bit surprised if they leave us out.

MarkWren -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 11:36:53 AM)

We've gotta keep our chins up if OSU's top six get us down early. Our top eleven should be able to wear them down, bigtime, second half. I might even press them a bit to get 'em playing faster than they're used to. If they torch us, they've still used up the energy to do so. Then, second half we crash the boards and get out on 'em fast-break style, like Wooden's old UCLA teams. Run 'em ragged, attack 'em the entire second half. They'll collapse.

Hold Turner under 40 and we'll be just fine.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 11:51:26 AM)

I want to root for Mississippi State (my 2nd favorite college BB team - they've ruined many brackets for me over the years - for example, the year they were a #2 seed and lost in the 1st round, I had them winning it all). But with the circumstances today, I just can't pull for the Dawgs. The Gophers might need that spot.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 3:18:34 PM)

Just off by three at half time. Hanging in with the big boys.

Yesterday they seemed blessed and just about every shot they took went in (or so it seemed). Today not so much, so they'll have to fight to keep pace with Ohio State.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 3:59:22 PM)

Getting U-G-L-Y.

Handled the initial 2nd half burst well, but things are falling apart now.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 4:24:47 PM)

Gave up 57 points in the 2nd half to a team with no depth that played a double OT game yesterday (and had 2 guys play 50 minutes).

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 5:50:41 PM)

#11 seed.  Vs Xavier Friday in Milwaukee

Looked like they finally ran out of gas in the second half.  They played tired.  Not an excuse, since everyone is tired.  But they needed to beat better teams by out-hustling them and playing tough defense.  That's a hard style to sustain back to back to back to back.  Once you lose that factor and everyone is tired on both teams, it falls back to pure talent and Ohio State is the more talented team.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 6:47:56 PM)

So for those of you who know the teams, how do the Gophers stack up against Xavier?

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/14/2010 7:38:06 PM)

I haven't seen them play this year.  But Xavier should be tough.  They get to the NCAA a lot, from a (in my opinion) underrated basketball conference the Atlantic 10.  This year I know they are a high scoring team and their best player g/Jordan Crawford is a transfer from Indiana and having a very good year.

Overall I think the Gophers probably wound up in the most favorable bracket though.  Pittsburgh, KState, even Syracuse, none of those teams scare me as much as the top seeds in all the other brackets.  Don't get me wrong it's never easy this time of year.  But it could have been a lot worse.

It would be real fun if they could keep the momentum going (throwing out the last 10 minutes or so of Ohio St. game) and make a deep run.  They are playing very well right now.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/15/2010 10:34:48 AM)

I've never seen a team that got so hot for so long as the Buckeyes did in the 2nd half. They had a strech that everything they threw up went in. The Gophers didn't have a chance

I can see them getting to the sweet 16 though.

Tim Cady -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/15/2010 1:11:55 PM)

We got a bracket from here going? Since I have watched zero complete games this year, I feel quite confident that this is the year that mascots and colors will be the way to go.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/15/2010 1:22:48 PM)

Hi Tim - nice to see you!!!

If you want to start a bracket thread - go right ahead. I wouldn't have any idea how to set one up.
