Why is it I'm getting a feeling the hockey season will soon be ending for us in MN?

Its what we do.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/25/2017 5:05:32 PM)

We are done....may as well put a fork in us now.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/25/2017 5:07:13 PM)

The desire level of our opponents is blatantly, obviously, higher.
Willing to block any shot, willing to do whatever it takes.
Us? Not so much .....

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/25/2017 5:09:24 PM)

Get the top seed, start play, open up a 2-0 lead, and then assume your opponent will quit because you are the mighty mighty Gophers.
Lather, rinse, repeat
Year after year after year

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/25/2017 5:10:03 PM)

LOL, got what we deserved. I'm out.......

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/26/2017 9:06:31 AM)

Blow it up.
Please.
This isn't working.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/26/2017 11:56:16 AM)

It's long past time for The Don to go.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/21/2017 12:39:21 PM)

Hockey fans can catch a glimpse of two highly touted Gophers recruits and other standout talent from Minnesota on NHL Network over the next several days.

The U.S. men’s national Under-18 team topped Switzerland 4-2 Thursday afternoon on NHL Network in the quarterfinals of the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation U-18 World Championships in Slovakia.

Friday’s semifinal game and Saturday’s Gold Medal and Bronze Medal games will also air on NHL Network.

Grant Mismash, the former Edina standout forward, was the U.S. team’s second-leading scorer with six points (two goals, four assists).

Ryan Poehling, the St. Cloud State forward from Lakeville, is among the team’s top goal-scorers with three goals. He scored two goals against Russia in the preliminary round.

Gophers recruit Nate Knoepke, a defenseman from Farmington, leads the U.S. with a plus-eight rating and is one of the top assist leaders with three.

Forward Scott Reedy, the Gophers recruit from Prior Lake, has one goal and one assist in the tournament.

Friday’s start time has yet to be determined. Saturday’s championship game is at 1:30 p.m. and the third-place game at 9:30 a.m.

The U.S. is unbeaten through six tournament games.

REALLY sad to see Potulney leave
Hope he does well
Pretty sure he will.

Sucks...would have been nice to seen him replace Lucia when he decides to retire (which still might happen in a couple).

I think Guentzel is first in line when the Don retires.
If not, there is no doubt Potulny should be on the short list even now after taking over Northern Michigan. A couple of years of running his own program elsewhere before taking over one of the premier programs in the country can only help.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/21/2017 4:09:41 PM)

Guentzel and Potulney have wasted a lot of their best years assisting, and waiting, for a job that isn't opening up.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/21/2017 4:14:37 PM)

How Lucia is still coaching this team is truly baffling.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/21/2017 4:16:44 PM)

You no likey the 15 year grace period? [&:]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/21/2017 4:19:14 PM)

No, I no likey. The Gophers used to have actual expectations of their hockey program.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/27/2017 4:40:22 PM)

What a great couple months for the Guentzel family.

Son becomes Sidney Crosbys go-to guy in Pittsburgh,
Dad named D1 Assistant Hockey Coach of the Year (well-deserved, imo)

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/14/2017 8:39:24 AM)

This kid could light up college hockey for us.

Casey Mittelstadt curled to the left of a diving Kyle Keyser, lifting the puck into the top netting past Keyser's outstretched stick hand and drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd.

The goal gave Mittelstadt's white team a 2-0 lead in the finals of Tuesday's 3-on-3 tournament at Sabres development camp, which turned out to be all it would need to secure the French Connection Cup in an eventual 3-1 win.

Throughout the four days at HarborCenter with fellow prospects, Mittelstadt dazzled, for now living up to the hype that came along with his No. 8 overall selection in the 2017 NHL Draft on June 23.

"We had a really good team so it was a lot of fun," Mittelstadt said. "We got to play with some pace and I think that's when I play at my best."

The 18-year-old showcased his swift hands in tight-quartered drills on Saturday, Sunday and Monday before putting more speed on display during Tuesday's full-ice session. This year, the 3-on-3 tournament was played NHL overtime style on full ice, allowing playmakers like Mittelstadt to show off more of their arsenal, as opposed to last year's usage of strictly the offensive zone for 3-on-3 action.

His team, with a supporting cast that featured 2016 second-round pick Rasmus Asplund, 21-year-old winger Hudson Fasching and 2014 second-round pick Eric Cornel, went 5-0 on the morning between round-robin play and a pair of playoff games.

Earlier in the week, Mittelstadt said that when his hands are slightly rusty, his whole game is thrown off. That didn't seem to be the case in the most game-like situations players faced all week on Tuesday, as the rising college freshman left a stellar first impression on his coaching staff in team activity after doing so in individual activity for the first three days of camp.

"I think he's just trying to fit in with the group," first-year Sabres head coach Phil Housley said. "This is all new to everybody. All these players coming in, it's just about creating relationships and how you carry yourself off the ice. He did a really good job, not only Casey, but the whole group, coming here and bringing the energy."

As with any player, there are still areas of improvement for the 6-foot-1, 201-pound Mittelstadt. The new Sabres staff liked what they saw on the ice from their top pick but were also impressed with Mittelstadt's showing off the ice in the last four days.

"Casey, as we said in Chicago, we're excited to have him part of our organization," Sabres GM Jason Botterill said. "We knew he was a great person off the ice. There was things that he had to work on, upper-body strength. What we were excited about, we saw a lot of lower-body strength in some of our off-ice testing, just his interaction with our staff, ideas to improve his game and then he's going to a great program at Minnesota this year."

After Mittelstadt explores the Buffalo area for the first time Tuesday night - he only went to a Chipotle Monday night - he'll fly back to Minnesota on Wednesday.

His freshman year at Minnesota begins in the fall, where he has his sights set on a Frozen Four appearance, especially since it's being held in St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center. Fasching, who played three years at Minnesota before the Los Angeles Kings drafted him in the fourth round in 2013, fielded a bevy of questions from the rising freshman about life as a UofM hockey player in the last four days.

"Obviously he's been through it," Mittelstadt said. "I've got a lot of random questions for him, like any freshman. It definitely helps. It was great to have him here for the week."

It'll be a minimum of one season before Mittelstadt makes his decision on whether to remain in college or turn pro.

And with quite some time before that decision date comes, the rising star set the bar high for himself in his first chance to do so for a new Sabres staff.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/14/2017 9:07:24 AM)

Most exciting prospect we've had for years. Totally jazzed to see him play.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/24/2017 2:41:58 PM)

Have we talked about Scottie Bell joining the staff?
HUGE hire
Amazing recruiter
Bleeds Maroon and Gold
Has been to the top in all the levels, including the NHL
Great hire

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/24/2017 3:05:40 PM)

Nope

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/24/2017 3:19:44 PM)

Met and dealt with him around 2005-6 when he was at Hamline.
Did amazing things there
Been doing amazing things every year since
Excited to see what he can bring here
I hated losing Potulney but maybe we have added a positive

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/24/2017 3:20:38 PM)

Will be interesting to see how he co-exists.
Has an ego
Might be very interesting

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/25/2017 7:12:01 AM)

This season should be fun to watch with the Mittelstadt coming in and a new coach added to the mix. The big rink and the speed of the game should feed into Mittelstadt's strengths the way it sounds.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/25/2017 1:57:45 PM)

Was it ever discussed why Serratore didn't go play for his pop at BSU?

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (9/2/2017 9:35:32 AM)

Gophers get verbal commits from 13 and 14 year old brothers?!?
Amazing how young they are recruiting these days......
