Like JD says!
Big un tonight ..... gotta split this series.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (11/21/2009 6:53:11 PM)

I'm damn near 50, and I still don't understand the mentality of the dorks that stand behind the announcers at a game and act like monkeys.
Someone explain that behavior to me, please.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (11/21/2009 7:16:08 PM)

As per what we were talking about the other day , Jeff ..... Gophers just ran my PeeWee-level "low-cycle offense" for a good 45 seconds in the 'Dog end. [:D]
Stealing from me .....

Matt Dahl -> RE: Gopher Hockey (11/21/2009 7:19:58 PM)

Just bought myself a sweet lookin' Gophers fleece at Kohl's today. But here I sit, rooting for the Bulldogs! I'm crazy, man, just crazy!! This is essentially just an intramural game anyway with the same school playing each other. Same colors and everything. I could just turn this sucker inside out and call it UMD gear.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (11/21/2009 7:25:29 PM)

Too good, Matt ... and true.
The maniacs aping it up behind Darby and Robbie Ink last night, I was thinking the same thing .... hard to tell who they are "for". The gear looks really similar.

GroundHog Day Part II

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/4/2009 9:44:07 AM)

Leddy back in the lineup tonight after only 34 days out with a busted jaw.  Pretty impressive medical turn around.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/4/2010 10:55:55 AM)

Love watching the World Juniors.
US rebounded from a horrible loss late to Canada on New Years Eve, to get back to the finals Tuesday night against the same powerful Canada team.
They rebounded with two impressive wins over Finland and Sweden. (the other powerhouse in the tourney)
Dean Blais doing a great job with the squad, a squad of uber-talented youngsters who he had to mold into a team in less than two weeks.
Hmmmm.
He has the Omaha job, yes, but his one out? If the U ever came calling. He has wanted that job his entire life.
Rumors swirling he is in-line for it. I'm as big a DON supporter as there is, but even I would like to see a change.
When a mid-season transfer steps in and is immediately on your top line, there is a problem.
Losses to Northern Michigan in your home holiday tourney don't fly here. They are becoming commonplace, in a place where common cannot be accepted.
Will be verrry interesting to see what, if anything, happens at the end of the year.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/6/2010 9:56:51 AM)

Congrats Aaron Schroeder and the other Minnesotans on Team USA.
Things looking great for hockey in America.
That was a loaded, loaded Canadien team that we just outplayed ... most of the 7 periods we played against them.
Love that Junior level. Great hockey. Pure.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/6/2010 12:30:03 PM)

Was an awesome game.  I felt bad for the starting goalie.  IMO, he didn't deserve to get yanked after giving up 3.  Gotta give Deano some credit though.  It seemed to fire up the troops and the 17 YO really held his ground well.  He got "floppy" and the result was one he wished he could back (made the score 4-4 if I recall).  But, all in all, the whole team played well.

Did you see the size of Carlson when he was interviewed after the first [:-].   That kid is huge.  He's going to be Pronger like without the assness.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/6/2010 12:36:58 PM)

Look up Blais's comments today.
Absolutely awesome.
Talks about building a team of two-way guys. No nancies.
Look at Schroeder. He was VISIBLE in the D zone. Unlike as a Gopher.
Love ya, Don, but a change is due.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/6/2010 12:38:48 PM)

The reason that is amazing, is that our WJC team is ALL stars. Every kid is the stud of his team.
To take them, and turn them into gritters in two weeks, and get them focused on a team goal, is amaziing.
Its Herbie-like.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/6/2010 12:46:47 PM)

“I didn’t want a bunch of fancy Dans. We took guys with character.”
- Team USA coach Dean Blais on what he believes was key on his roster that led them to gold in Saskatoon

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/6/2010 1:07:07 PM)

Hmmm....."fancy Dans".  Sounds a lot like

Replay on right now on NHL Network .... worth watching.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/8/2010 9:16:34 PM)

Boys looking good tonight.  4-1 deep in the 3rd.  Bounces are starting to go our way.  We've dominated this entire game.  Could be worse actually.  Jake "bo" Cephis with a goal, which isn't earth shattering news, I just wanted to call him Bo.  [:D]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/8/2010 9:17:46 PM)

And, SMF, we are starting to look like the team you and I have been pining for.  We are a decently skilled team who is out working these guys.  Not prima donnas who are expecting to out skill them.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/9/2010 12:17:02 AM)

I was at the game tonight and was pleasantly surprised. A lot of hard work, and you could tell a lot of emphasis on just getting the puck to the net. Cepis and Schroeder still have a little work to do on their timing, but you can tell they have the potential to be dynamite together, especially on big sheets like Mariucci. Patrick White was thoroughly unimpressive to me -- I would've liked to see more from him at this point in his career.

I'm pretty impressed with Budish. The kid is a hoss, but he can really skate, and he's not afraid to throw that big frame around. Fischer looks like an absolute pansy. I don't know if he checked anything out except for maybe a few cute girls in the stands. He just refuses to hit people. And I guess I'm still looking for a little more from Ness. He can sure skate, but he made a real blunder or two deep in our zone. Leddy, on the other hand, really looks like a player. I also really liked the Lucia/Sachetti line. Those guys just bust their butts and really skate hard. It's fun to see when they get rewarded for it, like that quick little snap shot Sachetti scored on.

In the end, though, this team is what it is (brief rant: isn't it ALWAYS "what it is?" When is it ever not "what it is?" So, if it ALWAYS "is what it is," why ever use that phrase, it being completely meaningless? Can someone help me with this one?). You can tell it's just lacking in dynamic skill guys. There were so many passes to one-timers that were just a little off, or passes bouncing off sticks, or rebounds to empty nets that got fanned on. As Jeff and Scott have noted, it's just gonna have to be overcome by old-fashioned hard work and some grittiness around the net.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/9/2010 8:38:16 AM)

Great, great stuff Pete and Jeff.
Love it when I watch and the same things get noticed by others, whose opinions I respect.
The whiffed one-timers really piled up last night. A sign that they are close, really close, to clicking on some nice plays.
We seem to be loaded with (to borrow a baseball phrase) 4-tool guys in a 5-tool world.
Almost every guy we have is talented, but lacks one thing that is killing them and our chances.
Lets remember, this is a struggling Harvard team. But I agree there was some reason for optimism last night.
I coached against Sacchetti when he was in HS, and for him to develop into a butt-buster is amazing. It was the knock on him coming in.
And I think you nailed it on White, Pete ... was so geeked by his HS tourney performance, and his college career has simply just laid there and done nothing.
I think we'll see a change in that line, as I agree that Schroeder and BoCephus are the future of this teams success, if it has any.
I was shocked to hear White was the third on that line, I think it was one of those "here's your chance, kid" things.
Budish is the man. Following the Potulney path pretty well. Its great that Grant is there on the bench to work with him on that.
Hilarious about Fisch ... the wife and I went a couple weeks ago, sat a couple rows up off the glass, and we watched him looking at himself in the glass.
Wife mentioned how "good looking" he is also. Big strong kid. Needs to play that way.
Agree on Ness, he had me convinced that by now he'd be one of those sure-thing All-Americans we used to have on the blueline, nope. He has Crowley/Leo/Martin potential.
Love how Leddy is growing, you can see it already.
If this team is improving, we will find out tonight. Tonight should be about FINISHING them off. Good Gopher puck teams would smother them tonight. We'll see.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/10/2010 10:58:00 AM)

A sweep, like we used to do to inferior opponents.
Harvard has a nice thing going, tho, they are young and talented and you can bet they will all be there working hard for all 4 of their seasons of eligibility.
But they are a team we need to spank at this point and we did.
Patterson let in an easy one early, but was solid from there.
Almost forget about Cade Fairchild, he had a good game and needs to step in and play more, and play better.
Time to get back to WCHA action and get on a roll.
Final 5 tickets are worth much more when the Gophs are involved ..... [;)]

Did you guys see this? Lucia said Budish will get some time on the top line with Cepis and Schroeder this weekend. This sounds like a great idea to me. Putting a big (but agile and skilled) moose in there with two dynamos could be really fun to watch. Crash the net, young fella! And at the very least, you're getting a very talented young freshman some crucial development with skill guys and against other teams' top D lines. Let's hope he produces enough to stick up there.

Excellent Sioux beat-down last night.
Just a question ..... when UND loses to other teams, (yes, they do lose) ...... do they act like little bitches and cheap-shot and fight then, too, or is it just when they lose to Minnesota?
Just a question. Never seen a Sioux loss to the Gophers that DIDN'T end up a near-riot.
Hmmmm.

Well then it's a good thing that the Sioux generally win. [&:]

Jason Dorn -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2010 9:38:48 AM)

Solid three points at home had to have them against the Sioux. Pivotal isnt the word for this weekend, have to get at least three again. This season is riding on Kangas, kid is remarkable when he is on!

Man is the WCHA stacked again 3 of the top 4 in the PW. 6 series' to go sweep three and split the rest with a good playoff showing probably gets it done. H/H with SCSU on the road, AA,DU, UMD and at home against CC, Wis. Huge series this weekend for both teams!

Go GOPHERS!!!!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2010 12:54:42 PM)
