Pete M. -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/24/2009 11:30:16 PM)

Are any of the Gophers sports teams actually able to, you know, put points/goals on the board? This is getting ridiculous. [X(]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/30/2009 11:46:23 PM)

Finally put up 5 goals and a W tonight ... too bad most of us couldn't see it live.  [X(]
The Dons kid with 2 shorties.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/5/2009 2:08:37 AM)

Lose your most-talented Dman on the weekend (Leddy) for most of the year,
And then your most experienced forward on Wednesday in practice (Barriball) for the rest of the year.
Ouch!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/5/2009 10:20:27 AM)

Yeah man.  This may be  a long season. [:o]

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/5/2009 10:44:09 AM)

I'm fortunate enough that I went to Bemidji State and can easily switch my allegiance from the U of M to BSU. Now I'm a fan of the best college hockey team in the state, and none of you guys are! WOOHOO!!! Go Beavers!!!!!!!![&:] Gophers suck!

TJSweens -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/5/2009 11:34:27 AM)

Heh-heh-heh...they're called the Beavers.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/5/2009 12:57:31 PM)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around "I'm fortunate enough that I went to Bemidji State" [:-]

They had a kick ass hockey camp for kids though.

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/5/2009 1:26:06 PM)

Tough breaks for those two young men, hopefully Barribal receives a medical redshirt and Leddy is back on the ice as soon as possible. The last couple of years have been disappointing, some tough luck but ultimately the lack of offense has done them in. This season was a horrible start with the shutouts at home against DU ... what is encouraging was the response with a sweep over a gritty AA squad scoring 9 goals, good defense and goaltending. Lots of talent with a big series against Bucky in Madison. The loss of two key players happens its upto the others to step up and produce as they are capable of. A split is very possible but the Gophers need to have loftier expectations and get back into the WCHA race!

GO GOPHERS!!!!!

A fellow Beaver alum!!!  Heck yeah Dahl.

Pop quiz everyone:  Who is the only team in MN ranked right now?  (The opportunity to say this may only come once in this lifetime, so I have to do it.)

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/6/2009 7:35:50 PM)

Nice start to the weekend ... give up a soft goal in the first :24 seconds. [&o]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/6/2009 11:55:19 PM)

At least they were consistent SMF.  A softie in the 2nd and 3rd.  60 minutes of soft hockey.  Gotta love it.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/7/2009 8:52:32 AM)

Yep. Consistency. Striving for it. [&o]
We did compete, but the goaltender did nothing to help us.
Need pts tonight if we are serious about contending.
Work on making the Final 5, that'd be a big-enough goal this season the way it looks.
That was  one of the weakest-looking lineups I've ever seen Minnesota put on the ice.
Just a strange collection right now. Some not ready, some not good enough, some may never-bes.

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/7/2009 9:14:57 AM)

In other news:

Bemidji State 2
Robert Morris 0

It's not too late...drew and I are still letting former Gopher fans jump on the winning bandwagon for now! But your time is running out!

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/7/2009 9:20:12 AM)

I'm waiting to see how the Beaves do against the Bottineau School of Mines and Technology before I crown their ass.....

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/7/2009 9:33:34 AM)

[&:][&:]
How about how they do against the Gophers next weekend?

That won't prove much of anything either, sad to say.

I'm thinking about going down to watch the Beavers kick some Gophers ass next weekend....how tough is it to get tickets for something like that? I imagine the whole city of Bemidji will be making the trip? It's gonna be nuts when the Beavers SWEEP the mighty Gophers!...in Minneapolis??...are you kidding me!...I'm so pumped just thinking about it!

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/7/2009 9:50:37 AM)

This Gopher team isnt mighty at all will be lucky to finish 5th or 6th. Slow, terrible passers, stone hands, turn it over at the blue line regualrly, no positioning, lack of a forecheck, brutal PP, cant hit the broad side of a barn, dont crash the net, dont attack the net on the PP, try to mke high school plays at the D1 level...at least they stayed out of the box last night and had a decent breakout.

Declining program, no way they should lose to Bem St, but they might, get swept and oh boy. Nothing against BSU, they have done a great job with that program.

Thanks Jim. Looks like standing room only for both games. For $32 bucks each, and to stand in a mob all game, no thanks.

Jim Frenette -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/7/2009 10:43:06 AM)

I know for the professional teams, there is a ticket swap site where people can sell or buy tickets. Maybe they include the college tickets

Found it

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/8/2009 7:19:21 AM)

Totally different team last night.  Great effort, I guess for them, moved their feet, passed it well, took quality shots, attacked the net, crashed the net, limited turnovers, outhustled them and Kangas was very sharp.  That is how they should play every time they pull that sweater on.  Wisconsin played well and the Gophers were just the better team and why Fridays effort is so disappointing...too many of those from this group.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/8/2009 12:18:10 PM)

Great post JD ... said it perfectly
When you pull on that M, you are the Yankees, the Celtics, the Blue Devils ... in other words, you will get everyones best effort.
We rarely rise to that level lately. We did last night.
if you are the best of the best, start acting like it.
Two huge points in the big scheme of things (making the Final 5)

Easy now SMF!!!  [&:]  #7 team in the country is rolling into Mariucci this weekend!!  This has been a pretty cool time to be a Beaver fan.  Frozen 4 run last year, awesome start to this season, and every day when I drive through town I get to see the building go up.  This weekend will be a real test, I'd be surprised if we even split with the U, but who knows?  Next year when we join the WCHA and have to face this competition week in and week out we'll see where we stand.

I graduated from BSU in '03.  In one of my years, the Gophers actually came up to Bemidji for a game (this was a year or two after we went D1).  We scored off the opening faceoff, about 8 seconds into the game.  Then the Gophs proceeded to pound us about 11-2.  After the game, the U said they would NEVER come back to our rink because it was so old and out of their league.  We've come a long way in a decade!

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/9/2009 5:47:39 PM)

Was just teasing drew ....
I'm closer to the Davids than I am to the Goliaths, believe me.
LOVE these stories, its the greatest sport for it (college hockey).
It wasn't too many years ago Rensaleer Ploytechnic Institute was the top team in the country.
Won't see that happen in BB or FB.
I want the Beavers to beat EVERYONE (except the Gophers) and it won't hurt me much if we do.
Their run last Spring was awesome.

drew -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/9/2009 6:49:17 PM)

I knew you weren't serious!  You bring up a really good point about college hockey being the world of the underdog.  I am by no means an expert, but I remember Lake Superior St, Northern Michigan, and RPI being top dogs at certain points.  As a sport, I think hockey lends itself to the underdog being able to make a run much more than any other sport.  It has to be more than just having a hot goalie, doesn't it?  Like I said, I'm not an expert, I've come to hockey just in the past few years.  It still ranks behind basketball, football, and baseball for me, but I have to say it's gaining!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/9/2009 10:02:25 PM)

College Hockey is truly an anomaly in sports.  That's why I love it so much.  In CFB or hoops you can't tell a kid from Canada or Europe that he can be the big fish in a little pond and get a positive response.  Our (SMF and I) Gophers are a prime example.  When Lucia was recruiting as a relative mediocre program we went back to back.  After that we had that "big school vibe" and the best recruits flocked to the UofM.  Once that happened we've been so-so or worse.  It's a lot like Duke.  When have they lived up to their preseason hype?  Their/our real studs last 1 or 2 years and then leave for the bigs.

That's fine if it's a guy every couple of years.  Not every year.....You lose continuity and "team" if that happens.  Off the top of my head I can think of:

Vanek
Kessel
Chucko
Eric Johnson
Okposo
Wheeler

And, I'm sure I'm missing some (at least it feels that way).
