Bah. Withers is likely leaving to be closer to home; d-coord at UNC for Butch Davis:

Gah.  Butch might be the only guy in the country that is a better "recruiter" than Brewster.  It would really be something if UNC and Duke became good in college football.  Both have the right coaches in place now IMO.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/19/2008 9:51:21 AM)

Kind of a chicken shit move on Withers part.  He didn't get a promotion it's a lateral move to get away from the worst defense in the nation.  You know, the one HE LED.   I understand the family/NC connection part but he even mentioned that the terrible D was part of the reason.

Chris Olson -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/20/2008 8:03:52 AM)

rumor has it that Kevin Cosgrove is the front runner for new DC position with the Gophers...

hope it ain't true for Minnesota's sake...

getting rid of him was such a relief in Nebraska!

Mr. Ed -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/20/2008 9:16:47 AM)

Another rumor has the ex-Duke coach as a front runner.

Mr. Ed -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/21/2008 3:22:29 PM)

Strib is reporting Ted Roof, ex-Duke coach is the new d-coordinator

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/21/2008 3:44:34 PM)

I read that article.  I don't know anything about the guy, but from the facts of the article it doesn't sound like we held out for the cream of the crop.   [:@]

djskillz -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/21/2008 5:47:44 PM)

Anytime a guy is from Duke's FOOTBALL program, it's probably not a good thing.

Save Spurrier I suppose.

TJSweens -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/21/2008 9:44:05 PM)

The key is not to evaluate him as a defensive coordinator based on his record as a head coach. Some guys are very good coordinators and poor head coaches. Look at John Gutekenst's tenure with the Gophers. He was a good defensive coordinator everywhere including here. When he took over as head coach for Holtz...not so good. Roof was a successful defensive coordinator, which got him his head coaching gig. Now he goes back to the roll he had success in. Brewster has proven pretty good at picking his people to this point, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/21/2008 10:00:46 PM)

Good points Tim.  I'm going to be crossing my fingers.

TJSweens -> RE: RE:Gopher Football (2/22/2008 9:54:36 AM)

Roof gets a pretty big endorsement from George O'Leary

Karl H -> Gopher Football (3/28/2008 11:30:08 AM)

Gophers have started spring practice.  What I see so far:

- Safety Curtis Thomas has left the team.  Dont know why?
- D.J. Burris has moved from guard to center.  Arguably their best lineman.
- Harold Howell has moved from WR to DB.  Still the primary return guy I would guess.

Most of the JuCo guys are there.  Still waiting to hear any reports on them.....

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (3/28/2008 11:35:50 AM)

Karl, did you see this from Sid?

quote:

  Gophers football players were working out on their own before spring practice started Thursday, and senior linebacker Deon Hightower has been very impressed by some of his new teammates in junior college transfers Tramaine Brock and Rex Sharpe, both of whom are already in school. Brock is a safety and Sharpe a linebacker. Speaking of the need to improve on defense, Hightower said: "Oh, I think it can happen, with guys like Tramaine Brock and Rex Sharpe working out with us, and just seeing what they can do, like in the weight room and the agility drills that we do. I can see us having a great D."

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (3/28/2008 11:54:04 AM)

Thanks Fargo.  I bet a lot of those newcomers will push for playing time, especially the JuCo's.  That secondary looks like a free for all.  Of all the players listed at DB, I count 4 who have ever reshirted.  Seems like a very low number!

I guess it was because Mason was so bad at recruiting defense, they were forced into play

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (3/28/2008 12:42:20 PM)

Spring Ball!
Lets get it on!
I can't believe how patient people are being with this program, (a good thing) .
I guess when you finally hit bottom, there's no where to go but up.
I truly believe we will get some strong improvement if Brewster is allowed a couple of recruiting classes.
Get hungry kids here and get them on the field. Plenty of playing time for all willing to do it the right way.
Find some guys who can fly to the ball, and then tackle once they get there.
They should almost have two seperate teams. Take the D off by itself somewhere and start from scratch.
Tackle, tackle, tackle. Cover, cover, cover. All day, every day.
Only way to turn this thing around, imo.

Sweet looking new duds.
Hopefully we play well in them.

Thanks Scott!  I am sometimes so amazingly lazy about that kind of stuff it shocks me.  [:D]

The biggest difference between the old and the new seems to be the outlining of the numbers, and maybe a slight change in the color.
