CHAMPAIGN, ILL. - Too bad there's no handing-out-roses or tossing-oranges tradition around the Meineke Car Care Bowl, or some way to invoke the hallowed history of the Heart of Dallas Bowl. If there was, the Gophers definitely would have been juggling car parts or wearing cowboy hats Saturday, because there was no missing the excitement in the Gophers' voices after their 17-3 victory over Illinois.
"It's unbelievable," said freshman quarterback Philip Nelson. "We've been talking about this all year long."
No, it's not going to be Pasadena. But the Gophers are going to a bowl game, and for a team that for the past couple of years has performed as all-around dreadfully as -- well, as the Illini did Saturday, for instance -- the destination isn't the point. It's the milestone that matters.
"It shows that we're getting better," said tailback Donnell Kirkwood, whose 152 yards and two touchdowns provided all the offense the Gophers needed. Minnesota's sixth victory -- as many as they have recorded in the past two seasons combined -- is proof of his point. So was the way Kirkwood and his teammates dismantled the Illini, keeping them out of the end zone, making a handful of big offensive plays when necessary, and avoiding the critical errors that have dogged them during the Big Ten season.
"We played old-fashioned football," said Gophers coach Jerry Kill, and their reward is one that seems out of the distant past: A trip to a bowl game. The Gophers won't know for two more weeks where their holiday destination will be, but Houston (for the Meineke) and Dallas, which own the sixth and seventh pick of Big Ten qualifiers, appear likeliest.
Too bad they can't play a bowl game here in Memorial Stadium, where the Gophers have now won four consecutive visits.
This one, though, doubled as Kill's first Big Ten road win, after six straight losses, and the tone for it was set by a goal-line stand on Illinois' very first possession. The Illini marched 89 yards and had two shots at the end zone from the 1, but the Gophers stuffed tailback Donovonn Young on the first try, and quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase on the second. Illinois kicked the field goal -- and never really threatened again.
In fact, Illinois' next nine possessions resulted in six punts, two lost fumbles and a turnover on downs. Forget the end zone -- the Illini, who became the first Gopher opponent to fail to score a touchdown since Purdue in a 17-6 loss in 2008, didn't even reach the red zone again until five seconds remained in the game.
Nelson had his worst day of four career starts, completing only nine of his 15 passes for 78 yards. But with a stout defense and an effective running game, they didn't need him. Kirkwood picked up 152 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, his third 100-yard game of the season.
Kirkwood's longest run was a 38-yard burst along the left sideline in the second quarter. But his most important run, late in the third quarter, was far shorter. As the center point of the Gophers' three-back "diamond" rushing formation, Kirkwood took a handoff and followed Mike Henry through a small hole in the Illinois line, easily stepping three yards into the end zone.
That turned out to be the game's decisive touchdown, though Kirkwood added another, a 12-yard romp to put the game away in the game's final two minutes.

Glad they touched on the Ilini's incompetence.
Pretty glaring. But you still gotta win 'em.

Anyone know what's going on the Tommy Olson? I heard he's healthy and didn't see him listed one the injury report. Surely he would have played when Mottla went down...

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (11/12/2012 8:36:19 AM)

Can someone clarify for me? 6 wins makes a team 'bowl eligible', but the announcers were talking like the Gophers were guaranteed a bowl. That's not really true is it? 6 wins just means you can go to a bowl, but not necessarily that you will.

What if there are more bowl eligible teams than there are bowls? Mathematically it could happen.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, has any 6 win Big Ten team not gone to a bowl...at least in this modern era of 100 bowl games? Maybe not. So maybe the distinction between 'bowl eligible' and 'going to a bowl' is a minor technicality. I don't know. But it just seems to me like this is not being reported correctly.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (11/12/2012 10:47:01 AM)

This year they are correct for the B1G. The math does add up a 6 win team. Here's a couple of articles by Adam Rittenberg to help sort things out but it's mostly due to B1G bowl tie-in's and a couple of bowl ineligible teams (OSU & PSU). Plus, there may be small bowls that will accept at-large teams.

10/13/12 - The Big Ten today announced its bowl lineup for the 2010-13 seasons, which includes multiple games against both the SEC and the Big 12 in addition to the Rose Bowl/BCS tie-in.

The league didn't announce an agreement with the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl in Detroit, though sources have told me that one remains likely and would be announced at a later date. The Big Ten has multiple ties to the Detroit bowl, including CEO George Perles, the former Michigan State head coach, and new president Lloyd Carr, the former Michigan head coach.

The new lineup features a late December game, another on Dec. 31 and five contests on Jan. 1, including the new Dallas Football Classic to be played at the Cotton Bowl. According to the Big Ten's news release, a Big Ten team will face a Conference USA opponent in the Dallas game, though sources indicated that the bowl will also consider Big 12 opponents.

The five Jan. 1 games could give the Big Ten the largest postseason presence on New Year's Day of any conference.

“We are excited to announce our bowl lineup for the 2010-13 seasons, with seven outstanding destinations in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, which will allow us to showcase our programs in six different New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day games,” Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement. “With the number of Big Ten alumni in these states, this bowl lineup is a natural fit and should provide some compelling matchups on the field."

To recap the lineup, according to selection order:

1. Rose/BCS vs. Pac-10/BCS, Jan. 1
2. Capital One vs. SEC, Jan. 1
3. Outback vs. SEC, Jan. 1
4/5. Gator vs. SEC, Jan. 1
4/5. Insight vs. Big 12, Dec. 31
6. Texas vs. Big 12, late December
7. Dallas Football Classic vs. Conference USA,* Jan. 1

*Big 12 remains a possible opponent

So seven tie-ins are finalized and an eighth remains likely. The overall lineup should help even the playing field for the Big Ten, which "plays up" in bowls more than any other conference and faces inherent disadvantages because of where the games are played.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (11/12/2012 10:55:12 AM)

This one was written yesterday....

The Big Ten bowl picture is beginning to take shape.

We know Wisconsin will be headed back to Indianapolis for the Big Ten title game, and Nebraska took a big step toward Naptown after another second-half rally Saturday against Penn State. All along, we've been projecting the Legends Division champion to the Rose Bowl, so nothing changes after Week 11.

There's still a slight chance Michigan could earn a BCS at-large berth, but a lot would have to go right in other conferences, and Michigan would need a significant boost in the rankings from a win against Ohio State. Right now, we still have the Wolverines heading to the Capital One Bowl for the first time since the 2008 game.

There are no changes with the next four bowl projections -- Outback, Gator, Buffalo Wild Wings and Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. The only change in this week's projections is Purdue's return following a road win against Iowa. Although the Boilers are just 1-5 in Big Ten play, they must only beat 2-8 Illinois on the road and rival Indiana at home to become bowl eligible at 6-6. Right now, we think Danny Hope's crew can get it done.

Indiana's and Iowa's bowl hopes both took major hits Saturday following home losses. The Hoosiers must win at both Penn State and at Purdue to go bowling, while Iowa must beat Michigan (road) and Nebraska (home). We don't see either squad reaching six wins.

Let's get to the latest projections:

Rose Bowl, Jan. 1: Nebraska
Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1: Michigan
Outback Bowl, Jan. 1: Wisconsin
Gator Bowl, Jan. 1: Northwestern
Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, Dec. 29: Michigan State
Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas, Dec. 28: Minnesota
Heart of Dallas Bowl, Jan. 1: Purdue

If Iowa would make it, I *think* the Little Caesar's Bowl would be available. The only team not mentioned above (along with OSU & PSU) is Illinois, who cannot reach 6 wins.

I think we can

Very bad punting.

Very bad running game.

Mediocre passing game.

Mediocre to pretty bad defense.

Very arrogant playcall to end the half by Nebraska.  Let's hope that pisses off the Gophers players and they actually show up in the 2nd half.

I liked the call.
The Gophers made a stop.
All is good.

Worst. Receivers. Ever. It's embarrassing.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2012 6:36:38 PM)

Wth gets into some of these kids?
First two drives today, couple nice plays .... And then on both of them, all our RB had to do was fall forward, get the first down, drive continues, and I guarantee a completely different result.
This is supposed to be big time football.
Be freaking ready to play.
It was like ... "oh well, we suck"
Expected better. Need three yards, our RBs get two. Need ten, they get two.
There were early holes to run thru, if you had some life in your ass.

Glad you said that.
Nelson gets it there most times.
Doesn't mean it will get caught.
Another group that really doesn't fight for its space out there.
"nope, can't catch that, there's a guy near me"
Nelson and decker would have been something to watch.

No playmakers. None. Nada. Our lack of athletes at the skill positions is very concerning. And Kill/Limegrover's inability to include Gray in the gameplan, somehow or someway, is discouraging. You've got one --ONE -- guy offensively who is a real difference maker on the B10 level and you scheme virtually NOTHING to get the ball in his hands however possible? Pathetic.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2012 11:23:55 PM)

I'd say we simply got out butts whooped today. We looked like a bunch of freshmen out there (even the non-freshmen). I would throw this game film in the garbage and move right on to next week. There's not much to learn from it except how to play bad offense, bad defense and bad special teams (unless you're watching Nebraska).

Looks like Michigan State has to beat us to go bowling. If we win, I'm pretty sure we are B1G #5.

Great post. I would add that Limegrover's play calling early doomed them as well. He does that from time to time. On the road, in a hostile environment when the D is getting run over.....he goes lame with his play calling. It was obvious that the D was totally overwhelmed. He did nothing to help them out.

Just read his rather long letter posted on his blog. For one thing, no scholly offer next year. Apparently he & Kill never saw eye to eye. Lose/lose for everyone in Gophernation IMO.

Maybe it's work ethic since what we saw in games, he should have gotten a scholarship.

It's one thing writing a letter like that to the coach, but putting it on a blog for the world to see is immature IMO.
