Scary thing is that we "should" go 4-0 but then we may not see another win [:o]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 9:01:17 AM)

I don't believe that. The Big Ten really isn't that good. Even the teams that are supposed to be elite in the BT will have plenty of warts exposed by the end of the year. I think a 7 win season and a trip to a midland bowl game is very doable.

Stacey King -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 11:24:54 AM)

Lehigh graduate knows all about pain
Wells clears barriers to lead talented Gopher secondary.

There’s a saying that there’s a difference between playing hurt and playing injured.

When you’re Derrick Wells playing in the Big Ten, playing hurt is part of the deal, especially when playing cornerback.

At 6-foot, 206 pounds, Wells may have gained almost 40 pounds since his days at Lehigh Senior High (Fla), but the Minnesota Gophers’ DB still has to tackle running backs bigger than him and cover wide receivers who are taller.

Getting banged and bumped is part of the deal.

“Coach (Jerry Kill) talks about being hurt and injured,” Wells said. “If you’re injured, you have to sit out, but if you’re playing hurt, you’re never injured.

“It is a mental thing. You gotta learn to work through it and stay positive and realize it’ll be all right. And keep playing.”

Wells goes into tonight’s season opener with UNLV with ankle and shoulder injuries that make him questionable.

Last season, he fought through a cut on his right leg. “I was still trying to help my teammates,” he said.

Wells believes he’s part of Minnesota secondary that’s one of the best in the country.

The numbers back him up. The Gophers ranked No. 12 last year in pass defense. They intercepted 13 passes, limited quarterbacks to a 57.18 completion percentage and held foes to 6 yards per passing attempt.

Last season, Wells tied for third on the team in tackles (74), was second in solo tackles (46), second on the team in pass breakups (10) and also made two interceptions, both against UNLV. For that, he was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Bronko Nagurski National Player of the Week.

Kill said Wells could play corner, safety or wide receiver. Gulf Coast High coach Pete Fominaya, who coached Wells at Lehigh, said he played quarterback and punted.

“We always knew he was really gifted,” Fominaya said.

But what impresses Fominaya the most about Wells is his smarts.

“His football IQ is through the roof, unlike any player I’ve seen,” he said. “He understands how things work and fit. He understands how the game should be played. I could get in complex discussions with him on coverages or schemes.”

Wells appeared set to go to Ball State, Fominaya said, until he convinced Minnesota coaches — who had been at Northern Illinois — to “take a look at this kid.”

Wells’ football knowledge goes back to when he was a tyke, said mother Margaret Babb.

“I used to watch football and he used to watch to at age 5,” she recalled. “He’d be watching the plays and knew what the play should do.

“He never played Pop Warner until he was 10, but it just came natural. When people would ask if he played before, I said, ‘No but he watched a lot of football.’ ”

Wells’ knowledge has allowed Minnesota coaches to move him from safety to corner. He’ll still be relied on to make a lot of tackles while covering wide receivers 1 on 1.

“There’s so many plays,” he said. “Now that I’m back at corner, I know what to do. I know what they want from me so I can play with more confidence.”

Even if he’s playing with pain.

P. Nelson rushing TD

44-16 Gophers

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 9:23:35 PM)

M. Leidner rushing TD

51-23 Gophers

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 10:00:56 PM)

Lots of big plays.

Line needs work, not much there for backs. QBs were effective in ball handling. Leidner looks like a load to bring down.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 10:09:49 PM)

Better start than last year. They weren't nearly as dominant as the score would indicate. A couple of big special teams plays skewed the numbers. Nelson seemed to find his stride more as the game went on. He definitely wasn't helped by Engler's inability to catch the ball. As Ed said there didn't seem to be a lot of holes opened for the running game.

How many drops? Sheesh

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 11:27:30 PM)

Well said Ed and Sweens
Lots of issues
Nice win, but lots of work to do
Deceiving score

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 11:30:00 PM)

What a weird game. Put up two TDs in the third quarter with the offense hardly being on the field, and that was it. And then added a third non-offense TD for good measure. I guess I'll have to settle for a game in which we were statistically dominated and won by 4 TDs.

They had a lot of the same problem with UNLV this year as last. No huddle spread quick hit offenses seem to give them trouble. The defense still has a long way to go. The difference tonight was, they showed some big play making aptitude, which they didn't have much of last year.

The atmosphere at the game was great. Big crowd (free ticket aided, but still...) lots of free flowing beer, of course. But without the drunken knuckleheads that seem to plague Vikings crowds.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/29/2013 11:55:56 PM)

So much fun to see the U kids having fun at these games.
hated that about the Dome
The student section desperately wants to have a season they can be proud of.
I want a great season to please all of us long-suffering Gopher FB fans .. but I really think I want it even more for those kids.
They are itching to be relevant in the big picture of college FB someday. You can just feel it.
Yes, we are eons away .. just saying it sure would be nice .....

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2013 6:45:01 AM)

I think they are capable of taking the next small step. Kill's first year - bad. Second year, .500 and muddled their way to a bowl game. But without any signature wins. That's what they need to add this year. Still not ready to contend, but bring back the axe or jug, get to a better bowl. That would be fine progress for this year. It's doable. There's some talent here.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2013 9:36:07 AM)

Both offense and defense had some problems, but now the coaches have film to help correct the problems.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2013 10:01:18 AM)

Agree the score is deceiving in terms of what the offense did, but nothing wrong with a team that has a defense and special teams that can score -- that's not necessarily a fluke.  End of the day, we dropped 50 on a team for the first time in forever.  There's something to be said for that, even if the offense needs to clean up a few things.

Only saw highlights from last night, but certainly sounds like a team that is noticably better than it was one year ago today.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (8/30/2013 10:53:04 AM)

I watched much of the game but happened to miss whatever it was that Leidner did. I came back in time to see a mega sideline congratulatory gauntlet, and I could tell by the score that he had made a touchdown - but they never showed a replay. Was there something particularly amazing about his score? I see a mention above that UNLV had trouble bringing him down, so I'm assuming he bulled his way into the endzone. Can someone fill in the gaps?

On the TD Liedner went in pretty much untouched. It was a keeper that completely fooled the defense. He had a couple other runs, but I don't remember much about them.

It was one of the weirder games I've seen in a while. The Vegas paper put it best:

quote:

UNLV coach Bobby Hauck looked at the scoreboard at one point in the second half and saw his team had outgained Minnesota 420 yards to 234.

By those numbers, the game shouldn’t have been close. And it wasn’t.

But it was a runaway in favor of the Golden Gophers

Their coach is taking a lot of heat in the Vegas media today. He oversees special teams himself and they were awful, and apparently it's a recurring theme. It wasn't just the blocked FG and the kick return TD either. They also had an extra point blocked, had a kickoff out of bounds, a 20 yard punt.

Thanks. I was flipping between three channels and just missed that.

Liedner must be a really great kid, Lynn
I was amazed as well by his treatment on the sidelines
Celebrity status. [:D]
Good for him.
He looked good. We're in pretty goods hand at QB
