Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/8/2013 11:21:14 AM)

I couldn't watch the game but appreciate the play by play Scott. Here's hoping that Nelson's injury isn't serious and he'll be ready next week. Wouldn't it be fun to have all three major Gopher sports looking good this year?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/8/2013 8:28:21 PM)

The injuries to DE Alex Keith (possible broken hand) and CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun (badly twisted knee, needs MRI) are even a bigger concern.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (9/9/2013 12:09:47 PM)

Wasn't able to watch it, and I know this team sucked...but however we got it, we scored 40+ again.  I like it.

I'm more and more confident that Kill can get us to Mason-level quality...pretty clearly, the quality of our players has improved and they are clearly better coached than the Brewster years (low bar, I know).  Question will be whether he can find the occasional 10+ win season.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/9/2013 2:52:27 PM)

My two biggest concerns with this team are throwing the ball and pass defense.

In week one we threw for less than 100 yards and completed less than 45% of our passes.
Week two was slightly better: 127 yards with a 53% completion percent.

On the other side, both UNLV & New Mexico St completed more than 70% of their passes against our defense. That's not good considering those two teams combined won just 3 games last year (and aren't expected to do a lot better this year)

IMO, we should beat W. Ill. Hopefully the Gophers won't take them for granted..........but I will.

That puts us at 3-0. San Jose State, Iowa, and Indiana should be close. Could go either way. But the remaining six games I think we are clear underdogs. To win 6 or 7 games, we must significantly improve in those two areas.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/9/2013 3:03:37 PM)

They happen to be playing the Gopher/New Mexico State game on FSN right now. It started at 2:00, so it's already in the 2nd quarter.

Agreed. I think Nelson is looking more confident as a passer, but in game 1 our receivers couldn't catch a cold. Engler in particular did a spot on impression of Lobster Boy. The injury to Briean Boddy-Calhoun is a particular concern to me. He had that nice pick 6 in game 1 and then went out with an injury 3 plays into game 2.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2013 3:57:45 PM)

Briean Boddy-Calhoun out for the season with a torn ACL. SH**!!!!! It really kind of bugs me that we lose a starter for the season during a game against a human sacrifice.

Gophers junior cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun has been lost for the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Coach Jerry Kill said today.

Boddy-Calhoun had an 89-yard interception return for a touchdown in the season opener but injured the knee on the third play of Saturday's game at New Mexico State.

"It's certainly a blow to our football team," Kill said.

Kill did say Boddy-Calhoun should get a medical redshirt, which will give him two years of eligibility.

KEITH BREAKS HAND

Alex Keith broke a bone in his hand at New Mexico State, but might be able to play with a cast, Kill said.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2013 4:37:31 PM)

Yeah, that is bad news. I believe Boddy had passed up both Shabazz and Baltazar on the depth chart this year. At least we are still pretty deep at corner. Wells is healthy and is a sure starter. Murray had already won the #2 job. Shabazz and Baltazar are second teamers and Marcus 'Sharkus' Jones is getting PT also. As stated, Boddy will get the redshirt.

I thought Keith could develop into our best all-around DE by the end of the year. He seemed to catch up to vets Amaefula and B. Perry. In the near future H. Ekpe might be just a good though. Throw in Cochran and we can still put 4 mediocre B1G DE's on the field. Barring further injury at this position, I would not be opposed to redshirting Keith also. Just a thought.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (9/13/2013 9:44:28 AM)

Hopefully Boddy-Calhoun can get a medical redshirt and still have 2 more years of eligibility. And if he needs an example on the team to show him what can be accomplished after an ACL tear he should look no further than Marcus Jones.

I love these 'Brick by Brick' videos the Gophers are doing. They are very well made and do a good job of capturing the essence of why I like Gopher Football. This one features Marcus Jones' story:

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/14/2013 12:27:29 PM)

Not a good half. Only up by a point in to the break. Nelson out with an injury. Kill has a siezure.....when will this ever get better?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/14/2013 12:28:52 PM)

I hope this doesn't make me sound like an asshole but this has to be killing recruiting. That's all they are talking about now. You wouldn't even know there was a game going on.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/14/2013 12:32:37 PM)

I started watching the game today partly because I figured it was the only win I was going to enjoy this weekend, but that's not exactly a guarantee here. Hopefully the second half is a different game.

Bad news about Coach Kill. [:@]

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/14/2013 3:03:49 PM)

This team isn't even close to being ready for Big 10 play. They've struggled against all 3 teams so far.

Jeff, I agree on the Kill situation can't be good for recruiting. It was suggested over twitter that Teaque should have come out and talked about it after the game.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/15/2013 12:24:40 PM)

I didn't get to see the game but it sounds kinda ugly. Probably like Michigan this week. Remember when we lost to these kinds of teams? Now we are complaining because we only won by 17. Thats a good thing.

I see T. Cochran is leading the conference in sacks (3) and tied for the lead in TFL (5). Hopefully he can keep it going & take some pressure off of Hage.

It's not helping, that's for sure. There's a lot of ignorance out there...and of course the media hype. I wonder when Kill has his 50th seizure, will it still make front page news on ESPN?
I don't really see a kid saying, "I like Minnesota the best, but coach Kill might have a seizure during the year so I'm choosing school X instead". Especially when Kill is straight up with them during the recruiting process. Of course other schools will use it against us. That's just the way it works.

It does have to make kids wonder about the longevity of the coach.

The 2nd half was much better actually. our ground game started clicking and that opened up everything.

I actually liked Souhan's article on this. Which is rare because I don't generally like his columns much.

This needs to be addressed. And if Kill and his staff think gritting your teeth and going back out there business as usual is addressing it, they are wrong. You simply can't have a major college football program run by a guy who people are anxiously watching during a tense situation to make sure he's not writhing on the ground.

You feel for the guy, but it just can't go on.

I like Kill and his staff very much. I was lukewarm when they were first hired. They have convinced me they are running a good program headed in the right direction. But constant in-game hospitalizations will cast a pall on the whole thing. Sure you can look at it and say it shouldn't negatively impact the game experience for fans, players and recruits. But it will. That's just a fact.

I honestly don't know what solution I am proposing. All I know is status quo is not it. What he really needs is probably some psychological help. Obviously the stress of the game is what is doing it. Someone needs to get him to look in a mirror and realize that his yelling screaming and intensity on the sidelines really isn't having any impact on the game, so he needs to learn to let go a bit on game day and just calmly manage.

If the doctors say it's not dangerous for Kill, I'm going to go with that, not with what Souhan thinks.

That said, there are legitiamte questions here: yes, if he's hurting the program, you have to factor that into your decisionmaking, no doubt about it.  That's a fair question.  (Although he could have a seizure every game and be better than Brewster.)

What I sense on Souhan's part is total ignorance re: the disease itself.

Actually that's been the pattern all three games so far. Tentative in first half dominating in the second half. I think that has to do with, they are a relatively young team, and they just don't trust themselves yet that they have talent and just need to come out and play hard and do what they are trained to do and good things will happen. It takes them a while to get in that groove.

I didn't detect anything in the article that would suggest Souhan is somehow ignorant about epilepsy. He was talking mostly about the effect it has on the program, and that is a legitimate concern.

I will say though that Souhan overreacted a bit on Teague. Reporters tend to think the world revolves around them and get pissy when the guy they want to interview isn't immediately available. Teague obviously isn't going to have any long term answers immediately after it happens. So at most you're just going to get a generic "Gosh we all hope coach is OK" quote anyway. I'm willing to wait and see what Teague does from here before judging him.

I thought it was a total douche column. Ignorant beyond belief.

Lines like ... No one who buys a ticket to TCF Bank Stadium should be rewarded with the sight of a middle-aged man writhing on the ground. ... tell me that Souhan should go long before Kill.

This was a beauty too...Saturday, when those generous enough to express interest in the Gophers football program asked to speak with Teague about Kill’s condition and the ramifications of his latest collapse, word was sent through an underling that he would not take questions until later in the week....
First of all vultures circling a carcass have now been redefined to be generous enough to express interest. And why would Teague say he will address it later in the week? Could it be that he wants to gather all the facts and make the most accurate and informed statements on the situation that he can instead of some knee jerk fodder for Souhan and his ilk to run with?

Look I have no problem with the discussion of what this means to the program and does there come a point where it needs to be addressed, but Souhan took the approach of an ignorant douche bag.
