OK, good call to kick it deep.

Now we need a quick score.

The reason I was thinking onside kick is it's very likely this will take 3 more scores to catch up.  Call me a pessimist, but I think two 2-point conversions is a long shot.  Almost as long of a shot as two touchdowns.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (11/8/2008 2:00:25 PM)

O-line terrible the last 2 weeks
2nd week in a row that a backup QB beat the Gophers.
Where was the urgency in the 4th being down by 16. That let the Mich defense set up.
No Jan 1st game even if they win the next 2

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Football (11/8/2008 2:47:55 PM)

What an awful game. How many shots were taken down the field--two, and both completed? I wonder if Weber's hurt more than we've been led to believe. And let me tell you, from personal viewing--Michigan is a BAD football team. Not average, not mediocre--flat bad. I've been to at least 4-5 games this year, I can't believe (or sadly, I can believe) Minnesota gave up 29 points to them, not to mention only putting up 6 themselves. But again, as Scott mentioned, this is what it's like to be a Minnesota sports fan.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/8/2008 3:22:53 PM)

TODAY is why we, as MN Sports Fans, panic when we are 4-0, and we play bad for a half, or blow a late lead and lose a game.
TODAY is one of those days I'd like to stuff up someone's ass the next time they say "Oh, calm down, it's just one loss/play/series".
TODAY is a good example of why it isn't panic when some of know that the Vikings'll never get closer to winning it all than they did in '98, or that the Twins giving away a meaningless game in MAY in Seattle WILL come back to haunt them, etc etc etc.
It's not panic, it's reality.
How long will this misery continue?
And how long will we have to endure coaches and players and teams that just don't "get it?"
Good teams/programs/clubs seize opportunity, they take it seriously, they grab it around the throat and squeeze every ounce of life out of it.
The 49ers of the '80s
The Steelers of the '70s
The Celtics in the '60s
The Bulls in the '90s
They didn't sit back and wait for more players, or hope good things happened, they went out and MADE good things happen.
We have taken on this stupid, lazy, laid-back attitude in our Minnesota sports, and we get what we deserve.
I'm sick as hell about it and I'm not gonna take it anymore.
(Well, thats not true, what the hell can I do about it?)
The Gopher Hockey team is really, honestly, the only team in town who plans on contending for National Titles.
The rest all play for "little victories".
Stuff your conference titles, your division titles, your league titles, big freaking whoop-de-doo.
If you aren't building to win it all, you won't win anything.
I'm done praying and hoping. I'm like that vulture in the cartoon who says to the other one
"Screw patience, I'm hungry. I'm gonna kill me something."

Amen and Amen.

DMueller -> RE: Gopher Football (11/8/2008 6:06:21 PM)

Don't sweat this team too much, Scott.

These are the Minnesota Gophers. They have been miserable for 35 years. They don't care. They haven't cared since circa 1977. This is a University that tore down a World War I Memorial Stadium and shipped their team off of campus (Which of those two events is the greater disgrace?)

If they cared, they wouldn't have saddled us with losers like Joe Salem, Jim Wacker, John Gutekunst, Glen Mason, and now Mr. Zero Coaching Experience Brewster. They maybe cared for ten minutes when they hired Holtz the Carpetbagger.

The basketball program got a name guy with Tubby Smith and immediately got better. If they would have cared about the football program at all they would have got (read:paid for) a name guy. And I don't care about the new stadium, all that is to me is undoing a wrong they did 25 years ago. A new stadium won't mask the fact that they wil be continuously out-recruited by the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin. That's the facts.

Plus, when you start off with lesser talent, and you run a gimmicky offense intended to take adavntage of a speed differential that you don't and never will have, you are sure to fail. Minnesota and the upper midwest in general does not have a lot of speed. What they do have is bulk, which is why they were able to run the ball so effectively under Mason. How in the blue hell are you going to have enough speed to beat the top tier teams in the Big Ten? Unless Brewster can land 5 star QB's and 4.2 guys on the outside on a continuous basis, they are going to be in trouble.

The talent differential was so obvious today. Minnesota's best defensive player is a guy from Silver Lake who they didn't recruit until the prep bowl. Minnesota is running a spread offense with slow white guys. Michigan is an elite nationwide program. Michigan will get a lot better when they get the right type of players. Minnesota? I don't see how it can be done, unless Brew gets all his skill players save for the TE from out of state/region. He has to recruit nationwide.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Football (11/8/2008 6:52:09 PM)

I still think the Gophers are going to be very, very good in a couple of years.

But I pretty much completely agree with Scott's rant in general.  Great stuff my man.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (11/8/2008 7:12:47 PM)

I disagree about the state of the program.

Mason left us with nothing. This was not supposed to be a big year, we were just hoping for improvement, while we waited for the good recruits Brewster has signed to either get here or mature.

But 2 weeks ago there was talk of going from 1 win last year to the Rose Bowl this year. That just doesn't happen.

But we're going from 1 win to a Bowl Game. Maybe a decent one.

I'm not happy about the results the last 2 weeks, but I'm thrilled with the direction we appear to be going in.

Agreed DL.  I'm down on a bunch of MN sports but I can't fault the Brew Crew.  We weren't supposed to be sqaut this year and we're going to a bowl game.  successful year no matter how it ends.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Gopher Football (11/10/2008 10:28:26 AM)

When Brewsters name gets mentioned as a Vol candidate then we just might have something. I like the direction we're going.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/11/2008 12:48:46 PM)

I had completely forgotten that it was Texas Tech that crushed our last hopes, in Mason's last game.
That horrible blown-lead game we thought we had all erased from our memories.
They've been headed upward ever since.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Football (11/11/2008 1:01:40 PM)

My uncle went to that one (he goes to every Gophers game, bowls included), and I'm not sure I've ever heard a more depressing voice on the phone re: sports.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/11/2008 1:06:01 PM)

I've morphed into becoming one of the whiny-ass NE fans in the '80s and '90s.
Ewww, poor me, our pro teams suck. Our college teams suck. No one likes us.
So .....
I'm hoping that means we are about to go on an incredible run like they have had the past 6-7 years.
So ... I figure, I've got that going for me.....[&:]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/11/2008 1:22:02 PM)

The SC loss where Rivers and Robinson carved us up hurt me more for some reason.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (11/12/2008 11:04:34 AM)

Good news: From Strib:

MarQueis Gray has passed his ACT and is headed back to the Univerisity of Minnesota.
”Yeah, I passed,” Gray said in a text message this morning.  ”I plan on coming back when the bowl practices start.”
Gray, an Indianapolis native, was one of the most highly-rated dual-threat quarterbacks on the recruiting scene coming out of Ben Davis High School. He began practice with the Gophers during training camp, but had to  re-take his ACT test after his test score was flagged by the ACT board. Gray took the test again Oct. 11 and posted a qualifying score.
Gray won’t be able to practice with the team during the Gophers’ preparation for their bowl game, but he will be on-campus. He plans on enrolling in school in January and would be eligible to practice with the Gophers in the spring.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/12/2008 11:31:15 AM)

I wonder how that will play out next year.  He sounds like a kid that won't be too happy to sit behind Weber for a couple of years.

QB should be in good hands for a while now, WR on the other hand......

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/12/2008 9:32:53 PM)

I think WR will be fine. They are just young. Mark my words Green will be a stud. The bigger problem is the O-line. Lots of freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores. Next year with another year of experience and Carufel in the mix they will be a lot better.

As to QB, Gray may not be content to sit behind Weber. He may very well take his job away. He is that good.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/13/2008 8:37:07 AM)

It's possible but Brewster seems to have complete confidence in Weber.  I hope the kid is good enough to take it.  I don't know anything about him outside of what I've read.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Football (11/13/2008 2:06:16 PM)

I think Weber has been way too inconsistent this year so I'd like to see Gray prove himself to be better.  From what I've heard/read he could be similar to a Juice Williams type impact with his athletic ability.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/13/2008 2:23:03 PM)

The bottom line is that if he gives Brewster a better chance of winning games he will become the starter.

Green was a four star recruit last year (Rivals), I hope he keeps improving.  Carpenter is also 4 star coming in next year.  Decker is Decker.  Many people may not like Kuznia, but he does catch nearly everything.  Stoudemire showes flashes, but has recently disappeared.  I think Spry will be lucky to make the 2 deep next year and getting suspended isn't helping his cause.  Anyone know the status of Vincent Hill?  He was a 4 star last year also.  This group should be much improved.

I believe MarQueis Gray is "grayshirting" this year.  Maybe someone knows for sure, but I dont think his eligibility clock has started yet.  He could redshirt next year behind Weber & Pittman.  Then be #2 as a redshirt Freshman, and still have 3 years as the starter.  Doubt that will happen though as Brewster doesn't seem to redshirt a lot of guys, especially the good ones.

Also, it shouldn't be a big surprise that Weber has looked shaky lately.  He's playing against better defenses, behind a subpar O-line, with...BY FAR...his biggest weapon either out completely or much less than 100%.  Not to mention losing the starting RB whose backup is a true freshman.  I think that would affect nearly every QB!  That said, I look for wholesale battles on the line next year.  I dont think anyone's job is safe.  Maybe D. Alford, but not even sure on him.  If nothing else, we will actually have a lot of depth.  Nearly two deep with guys who have started multiple games.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/14/2008 9:27:46 AM)

Good point on Weber Karl.  It's hindsight now but I think the start of the year hurt Weber.  The first 5 games or so he only seemed to look for Decker.  It worked well so I don't blame him but lately he hasn't had that security blanket.  We got the wins but maybe spreading the ball around more would have helped in the long run.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/14/2008 9:59:34 AM)

Gray isn't even grayshirting. The NCAA blocked his admission because his ACT score was flagged. He could actually be recruited by other schools while he was waiting for the results of the test he took in October. He won't be enrolled until January and his eligibility clock won't start until next season.

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Football (11/14/2008 12:11:18 PM)

I've been pretty down on Weber for a few weeks now, but I can agree with some of that rationale.  The other thing that I've seen is that the play-calling has been extremely predictable of late which I don't remember being the case earlier in the season.  It's almost as if they set in stone the exact plays that will be run for the rest of the year and they're not making any adjustments as the year goes on.
