Good points Jeff. I'm definitely more discouraged about the Vikings than Gophers, but it all piles on top of each other.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/16/2014 9:42:12 PM)

Yeah, me too.  The Vikings seem to be swinging in the wind....again.  The  painful loss for the Gophers showed we are getting closer.   We have 3 trophies in the case and had a chance to beat a 8-1 OSU team that is fighting for the Nat Ch.

Think about that, we are still lamenting how we "could've have had it".    Baby steps!

The biggest difference on Saturday was at quarterback. Barrett is good and Leidner is not. After two seasons I would have hoped Leidner would be better, but it is time to give up on the kid. His decision making is brutal. Two years in, he should know when to throw the ball into the tuba section and live to see another down. Instead, he is still throwing the ball into a crowd and trying to make a play when it isn't there. In addition, he made some very poor decisions on the read option. There was plenty of times when he handed the ball off to Cobb where the Buckeye defensive end had lost containment and committed to Cobb. Instead of big gains by the QB, they turned into minimal gains for Cobb.

After two years, the kid should be better at the basics.

You and I don't disagree a lot on things.  That being said, I don't "totally" disagree here but I think it's bigger than that.

I know how you feel about the Gopher QB situation.  Most of us here have been down on Leidner this year.  He misses some really big throws.  It's super frustrating.

It's bigger than that though.  He has jack-shit to throw to.  He has Williams (who you'll most likely dismiss) and that's it.

He can run but he's not a runner like Barrett.  They are different but effective in their styles.

The massive difference, IMO, is that teams don't respect our O-"weapons" like they have to with OSU.  When Leidner breaks the pocket there is 2 yards of cushion because the whole D is 10 yards from the LOS.  When Barrett breaks the pocket, half the damn team is 50 yards down field chasing home run threats.

Hard to defend that.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2014 8:29:52 AM)

The problem with Barrett's long TD run is that the LB didn't stay in his lane. He bit on the fake and abandoned his lane to go after the RB, which left it wide open for Barrett. He was supposed to stay in front of Barrett and trust his people on the outside to do their jobs if the pitch is made. Total defensive breakdown.

Jones apparently was grounded for violations for a quarter or 2, then showed up sick on Saturday. Another so-called weapon that wasn't available.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2014 9:16:35 AM)

Nice to read that the Gopher players were more upset than satisfied
They claim to be upset that they DIDNT win.
Very refreshing.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2014 9:36:00 AM)

Yep, I love that Kill and the players refuse to even touch the idea of a moral victory. The player comments that I read in the Pioneer Press is that they don't believe OSU is better than them and they hope to get another shot at them. They're mad that they didn't win and that's awesome.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2014 9:37:38 AM)

Lovin that

We need that desperately in every sport.

Yep.......so sick of the tippin your hat/helmet, etc. bs.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/17/2014 11:37:31 AM)

Even Teflon, cocky, perfect Urban Meyer didn't blow us off completely.
Said it was a very tough game and was very happy to leave with a win.
Baby steps, baby steps ....

And that's the difference right now between them and us. When they have a guy miss an assignment, our athletes pick up 10-20 yards. When we miss an assignment, they go 86 yards to the house.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:08:15 AM)

Only 1 series but I didn't like that offensive drive to open with.  We need good Leidner to stand a chance today.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:14:31 AM)

UGGHH...may be one of those days.  [:o]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:16:34 AM)

2 plays and their starting C and best WR are out for the game.

We have lost our Center for the game already? Who is the WR Freuchte or something like that?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:28:29 AM)

No, Nebraska did.  Kenny Bell/concussion and Pellini/C -knee.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:29:06 AM)

BTW- our best WR - Williams.  Our 2nd best, William's shadow [&:][:o]

Much better drive there.  Now we need the D to stiffen up.  We should be able to run on these buys all game long.  We can't get in 3rd and long and have to rely on Leidner's arm.

I know.  That was the joke! [;)]

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:30:52 AM)

I tuned in a little late but looks like we are going Cobb as Decoy with Leidner carrying the load.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:35:01 AM)

Leidner has been good running it so far.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:38:34 AM)

Damn, these guys are falling like flies.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/22/2014 11:40:38 AM)

Is it me or do we call unnecessary timeouts ever single game??????
