Spielman chooses the Huskers. First recruit out of Minnesota since they joined the Big 10.

Always like to good ones home, but the Gophers are currently sitting with 3 WR commits in Hmielewski, Phillip Howard and Snelson. 4 seems like a lot for this class. I think JD is Nebraska's only WR commit right now.
Snelson was the 4 star surprise. Hmielewski is very much an under the radar guy with excellent blood lines. Howard appears similar to Spielman, we will see how things play out.

It is Nebraska's first WR recruit. They are supposedly going to get at least 4. Spielman is being recruited as a slot receiver and will be given a chance to return punts and kickoffs.

Gotta get this thing going!

#2 TCU comes to town on September 3!!!!

No wondering this year, if we have a team, or not.
We find out night one.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (8/25/2015 11:56:54 AM)

I got a bad feeling about it [>:]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/25/2015 1:18:06 PM)

Cmon bud. Need ya. [;)]

I think we luck out, it'll be their first outing as well, it won't be like they're rolling people yet.
Place should be rocking, if we can't get up for this one there's something wrong.
I'm predicting we shock the world. Or at least the NCAA. [;)]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (8/25/2015 1:39:18 PM)

I love the optimism my man but I can't see it. Excited as hell, don't get me wrong. I just see the offense as actually being worse than last year (at least the first couple of games) and their offense hasn't changed much, if at all. We will need points and I don't see us moving the ball effectively at all.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Football (8/25/2015 5:06:31 PM)

If we can hold them to 30 points we have a chance. But, as Jeff said, our offense will be hard pressed to keep up with them. It sure would be a great way to start the season!

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/25/2015 5:21:52 PM)

I'm hoping our strength (defensive backfield) is ahead of everyone, that first night.
Definitely going to need field position help from the other areas ... STs, breaks, HFA, etc ....

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (8/25/2015 5:49:01 PM)

If we have a chance we have to control the LOS on offense. Their speed tore us a new one last year and they were in the backfield all day long.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/26/2015 11:40:04 AM)

I get to watch our latest WR recruits home games this year.
Great start for him in a 68-0 win.
Plenty of great catches, yards after catches, and blow-up downfield blocks.
He's grown and is exhibiting some real leadership qualities.
He's on the Eric Decker path.

How big is he? Is he that dominant, or is the competition that weak?

http://www.thedailygopher.com/2015/8/12/9139243/minnesota-football-recruiting-drew-hmielewski-commits

Marshall (MN) wide receiver Drew Hmielewski publicly announced his intention to play for Jerry Kill on Twitter last evening, becoming the 9th member of what is now commonly referred to as the "Empire Class" of in-state prospects for 2016. A three sport star for Marshall, Drew is rated a 3 star prospect according the the 247 Industry Composite. Hmielewski comes from an athletic family with a background in major D1 sports, and chose the Gophers over a number of different offers at the FCS level. Drew is the 15th commitment for the 2016 class, and the 3rd projected wide receiver.

He appears to be still growing (of course). Perfect size really, about 6'2"about 200 lbs. Carries it very well. Father is a big man, Mom is small. But both were highly accomplished D1 athletes.
He is dominant at his current level. (AAAA Minnesota HS)
Most of the competition they play is NOT competitive, but he also is one of the few that steps up when they encounter legit teams.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (8/28/2015 9:08:27 AM)

It's MN. It's written in our Charter that we have to have, at least, 1 "ski" on the team [;)]

Big 10 unrest; Illinois coach canned before the season starts

Illinois has fired head coach Tim Beckman with cause, citing preliminary results of an external review into allegations involving the program, the school announced Friday.

SI.com's Thayer Evans reported news of Beckman’s dismissal. Offensive coordinator Bill Cubit has been named interim head coach for the 2015 season.

Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas said in a statement that during a preliminary briefing from the external reviewers, he learned of “efforts to deter injury reporting and influence medical decisions that pressured players to avoid or postpone medical treatment and continue playing despite injuries.”

Beckman, Thomas and others at Illinois have been the target of complaints and two lawsuits by former athletes alleging abusive treatment within the football program. In May, former Illinois offensive lineman Simon Cvijanovic wrote a lengthy series of tweets accusing Beckman of forcing him to play through injuries and other forms of “abuse and misuse of power”

Cmon people!!!

3 days to one of the biggest nights we've seen around these parts.
Its our shot to get some exposure and some national attention.

And could possibly be another embarrassment and set us back to ground zero.

oh.

I see.

Nevermind...

Most of the key Nebraska sports journalists are picking Minnesota to win the West.

It's pretty well no lose for the Gophers against TCU. They are expected to lose to the #2 team in the nation. An upset puts them ahead of the curve. A loss is pretty much an "oh well" scenario. Even a loss like last year's.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/2/2015 8:57:52 PM)

As Kill is quoted as saying in the Trib this morning.

The Gophers are 16 ½-point underdogs.

“What have we got to lose?” Kill added. “We just go out there and have some fun and play hard and see what happens.”

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/3/2015 9:50:51 AM)

I read an article the other day in the Strib that was "Kill has done it again, turned around yet another program". According to that article (which I know is BS) we've arrived. Can't have it both ways. He got a big extension and the local press is saying we are the shit. National spotlight on opening day.

His quote is setting it up for a loser mentality letdown. I hope to God he/they prove me wrong but he's done nothing, to this point, to get me more hyped than the Mason days. I'm tired of this program being "decent at best".

Big one tonight to see where this program really is.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/3/2015 9:53:13 AM)

So, not sure about you guys but for me:

Win - I'm on cloud nine and my expectations fly through the roof
Lose by 7 or less - ok with it, still really high hopes for the season
Blown out (14 or more) - gutted and this whole season is just a 'meh' from there on out. Hope for a mediocre bowl game and maybe he wins one, finally. If it's in Texas I'll go. If not, tv time

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (9/3/2015 10:17:11 AM)

Blown out

Hope for Glenn Mason bowl 2015-16

That's why I don't see why coaches hate to play a tough team in non conference. Unless you have genuine aspirations for a national championship and one loss ruins your season, why not? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Take one shot. Schedule one tough game like this and 3 cupcakes for padding.
